Is there any reason to jailbreak now? I mean now we have multitasking and background wallpapers what is the point?

A lot of things still, we still don't have themes, we have wallpapers but not themes. Unlocking. Emulators. And more.

Quickreply, sbsettings, full customization over anything you want, eventually facetime over 3G not just wifi. trick apps into thinking you are on wifi (so you can download updates over 3G that are bigger than 20MB etc...
Yeah, I'm using an iPhone 4 now and I miss being jailbroken. I keep on forgetting that it isn't jailbroken and sometimes I'll swipe down the top bar expecting SBSettings to slide down, lol. Also I like having some of my apps password protected, it stops my "friends" from sending stupid messages to my other friends.
Hopefully iPhone 4 jailbreak will be release sometime soon.

noob question: people say that jailbreaking allows you to have free apps from the app store. true?

Discussing cracked apps/pirating is strongly frowned upon on TA.
And if you talk about it, you run the risk of getting banned.

True, but you're not allowed to ask how to on here. Personally, I'm still puzzled as to how anyone could honestly consider iPhone apps expensive enough to pirate.

Haha I know what you mean! I have been a BIG supporter of jailbreaking since I got my first iPod and now with iOS 4, I don't really need it, except for support for my Cydia Store Apps and Themes.
When I get a new iDevice I don't think I will even bother jailbreaking it.

if they don't sell an app in your country, slide to jailbreak.:)

The reasons I jailbroke
1. AppBackup (I have a iPod touch and iPhone and this has been a lifesaver when I wanted to switch and play the game on another device.)
2. Backgrounder (It enables native backgrounding on all apps even if they have not enabled it yet.)
3. Insomnia (I hate that my WiFi shuts off when I lock.)
4. MultiIconMover (Why didnt Apple think of this first? I can move a ton of icons much faster. No support for folders yet though.)
5. My3G (Finally I can download and run the iPhone the way it is meant to be. No more stupid limitations on 3G.)
6. MyWi (I can tether my iPod touch and laptop on the go.)
7. Notifier (I dont know why Apple does not do this but I really like icons on the status bar notifying me of something missed. But Silent and Reminders are not working in 4.0.)
8. SBSettings (Quickly turn off or on almost anything and have instant access to what ever you like.)
9. SpringFlash (Hold the statusbar and voila I have a flashlight.)
10. InvarcerApp (Dont you hate when you press the home button or let a kid use it and they love the home button. Disable it with a volume rock up and down and it wont happen again.)
11. FastSnap (No more searching for a virtual button on the screen. Just press a volume button and it will take a picture.)
12. BlankNull (I use my pages in a certain way and they are not always full so a blank icon to fill it up helps a lot.)
Here are a few things I am waiting for since not supported in 4.0
1. LiveClock (Make the clock active and not always say 10:15.)
2. WeatherIcon (Make the weather icon useful and give the current conditions instead of sunny at 73.)
3. iKeyEx (Make the keyboard actually useful with 5 rows instead of switch between two keyboards all the time.)
4. Maps Enhancer (Cache the maps on google maps so you do not have to wait for them to load.)

Reasons to jailbreak now?
SBSettings, customization, and emulators.
Backgrounding was another big reason, but 4.0's backgrounding is sufficient.
However, if you're running a 2ndgen/3G, you'll still need Backgrounder (and Kirikae is a pretty nice addition to it.)
I'm also a firm believer in root access.
I spent alot of money for my iDevices, and I spend alot monthly for the plan.
I don't like Apple telling me what I can, and cannot do with MY device.
It's not rented, it's mine.
I don't support piracy on iDevices, as the "companies" making most of these games tend to be small groups of friends, sort of a 'homebrew' community.
Not going to lie and say i've never pirated either, because there are alot of people out there releasing crap that Apple doesn't need to allow.
Along with very pricy games, with no "Lite" version.
Anything i've pirated that I enjoyed, I deleted and bought legit.
Other things, just get deleted.

Same here.
Some of the jailbreak apps (ex. winterboard) were a drain on my battery.

If you install backgrounder now it will enabled the native backgrounding on all apps. This way you do not have to wait for it to be updated to support the iOS 4 backgrounding.
Now I am just hoping they will find a way to make the App switch only show the apps currently backgrounded and now every possible app I ever opened.

Backgrounder is nice, but be aware that using it's method of backgrounding will drain the battery faster. Fortunately it has an option to use native backgrounding when available, and Backgrounder backgrounding when not. Also, and this is how I use it, you can set it to use native backgrounding only, but then make specific overrides for specific applications - I don't really want all apps running in the background like they would in the foreground, but certain applications I do want to do that with.
Also, and this is also useful, you can use it disable even native backgrounding (all backgrounding) for specific apps. Why? Well, I've got an app that I like a lot called Camera+, but while it supports native iOS 4 multitasking, the program is buggier then hell with it! Half the time, when switching back to it, photos won't save! That's pretty disastrous and rendered it worthless, but by disabling native multitasking, until such time as they fix it, it's now a useful application for me again. I call that a win for sure!
So, what about instability? Yes, certainly jailbreak hacks and apps can cause issues, so if you aren't up for some troubleshooting on occasion, then my advice would be to skip it. However if you're a hacker at heart and love getting cool features, even if there can be some effort involved, sometimes even major frustration, then you should give it a try. There's some really great features available to you only if you jailbreak.
Here's others I love:
MyWi (this was a lifesaver recently, when our home internet went out for a week - we used MyWi to share it's 3G connection with both of computers and it worked great! Was even decently fast.
My3G. Not exactly a lifesaver, but I sure love being able to download my favorite podcast, which is *always* just over the 3G download limit. With My3G I can download it even when on the road. This has also proven handy for other stuff too. I love it.
BTStack GPS - this will let you use an external bluetooth GPS with any application! The built-in GPS on the iPhone 4 (and iPhone 3GS) is fine when in the open, but in the woods (I love to "geocache" and the Geocaching App available in the App store is great, but the built-in GPS isn't always up to the task) or in cities it can be problematic. Why doesn't Apple allow us to connect to a Bluetooth GPS to resolve this problem? I haven't the slightest idea why not. In any case BTStack GPS will do it and it works great! I've used it with CoPilot Live, the Maps app, MotionX GPS and I've played around with it in Geocaching and it works, but I haven't been able to test out how much better it works in the woods yet, but in any case that has nothing to do with BTStack GPS, and everything to do with the particular bluetooth GPS receiver you use. I expect it's going to make a huge difference because I'm seeing a huge difference, for example, indoors, which is not unlike being under a tree canopy. At home, for example, in my house I get about 96' accuracy with the built-in GPS and 3' accuracy with my Bluetooh GPS receiver!
EDIT: here's another, also mentioned below, iFile. This is a great tool for a hacker. I used it to change the "It's your move" sounds in Carcasonne, to a sound effect I found in Q-bert (iPhone game). They both used WAV format audio. First I used iFile to ZIP the existing sounds into an archive as a backup. Next I copied one sound out of Q-Bert and pasted it into the folder for Carcasonne and renamed it. Then made 3 copies, renaming each to the appropriate name. Now, instead of being embarrased by the phrase "It's your turn now" when I'm somewhere where I forgot to turn off the sound, and should have, I get a pleasant, and quiet, little "bloop" sound. iFile made it possible do this easily (easily for someone a little savvy with this kind of stuff). You can also use iFile to install stuff that isn't available from Cydia. For example I used it to install the MobileTerminal version that Saurek recently posted about, that is compatible with iOS 4. Copied the .deb file over with iFile's WebDAV server, then just selected it and picked "Install" in iFile and away she went. Very handy tool and worth the asking price, though it is also quite functional without buying a license.
Here's some stuff I *don't* recommend, at least not in iOS 4/iPhone 4:
Winterboard - it doesn't work in entirety in iOS 4 and can be frustrating. Plus, let's face it, the folks making these themes... they really aren't very good. Oh, they look pretty, but they are almost all completely unusable. They're either ugly or unusable. Take your pick, though often they're both. Apple knows how to design a UI. These hackers do not.
OpenSSH - I would highly recommend that instead of OpenSSH, that use iFile and it's built-in WebDAV server, which gets toggled on when needed and off when it's not. I am not 100% sure about this yet, but I am somewhat suspect that OpenSSH has caused instability for me. I get crashes when I have OpenSSH enabled. Now, I'm definitely not sure about it, but for the time being, at least, I'm going to go with this recommendation. Also, if you don't change the default password for both users "mobile" and "root" when you have OpenSSH installed you'll leave yourself vulnerable to attack. Using the WebDAV server in iFile, and then only as needed, is safer.
