I think I'll wait couple days before I attempt to jailbreak my iPhone 4. There have been some reports of bricking and purple screen issues - http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/01/official-iphone-4-jailbreak-hits-from-iphone-dev-team/

& I used to think blackrain was easy.
This work flawlessly on my iPhone4 & what ever gripes I had about jailbreaking were completely shot down by the sheer convenience of this jailbreak.
No wires, sit on the couch a jailbreak from your device.
I recommend doing it over WiFi just so you get a fast non interrupted break, & reboot your phone after it's complete...(I thought I nukes my safari app for a sec when I wastnt responding before I rebooted)

Anyone having trouble with iFile or Mobile Terminal on a 3GS? They keep crashing :(
bcoffeecat
08-02-2010, 12:03 AM
iFile won't work UNLESS you change the date. Yeah it's weird.
Go to Settings->General->Date and Time
And then change the date to March 18th, 2010
Even then, iFile only opens for me about once every four tries. It's pretty buggy. They need to hurry up and make it iOS4 compatible.
There's really only 2 reasons I'm jailbreaking: (1) SBSettings and (2) ability to set home screen wallpaper because I have a iPod Touch 2G.

Here's a regularly updated list of Cydia apps and hacks that are currently compatible with ios4, for those that are interested. I'd say about 75% of my apps are currently working. I hope the rest follow soon.

Ugh, that's just stupid. I guess I'll just wait until it's iOS4 compatible. Either that or the david.ashman.com repo needs to go back online. All I want is Lockscreen Clock Hide
Well that was extremely easy. Even a month old baby could do it. All you have to do is "slide to jailbreak" and in about 5-10 minutes of waiting and your device is jailbroken! It couldn't be more simple (well except for "tap to jailbreak").
Hopefully this will get more people to jailbreak which will make more money for the dev team and lead to even more improvements and better apps/mods.

Does anyone know a simple way to add wallpapers on an iPod Touch 2G (since wallpapers aren't supported by iOS4 on that device)?
Desktop/SMS Background isn't working, and it's annoying to have to use iFile to manually change the background image. I just want a button (just like in iOS4 devices that support the wallpaper) to "Set as Home Screen Background."
I don't need to change icons, or anything.

Yes you can get emulators. All (or most) are paid. The money goes to the developers, just like with the official App Store. And it's all secure because it's done through paypal.
The one thing they don't supply you with are the roms.

You do NOT lose any of your data. All you do is get a new icon (Cydia) that allows you to download unapproved apps.

There are both free and paid emulators. I've never tried buying a jailbroken app though.

I haven't bought any emulators but I went to go as if I was about to buy one and it said something about paying through Amazon or Paypal. Not sure exactly how it works but I would assume that it's safe. And yes, you can also buy/download normal App Store apps and they will function fine. Your device will remain the same, except with the addition of more awesome stuff :)

I highly doubt it. The transactions are done through paypal and paying through paypal is safe.
And you don't really need to buy anything off cydia. Most of the good stuff is free. I've been jailbroken (on and off) since the original iPhone was first jailbroken. I've never felt the need to buy anything off cydia though.

the purple screens are nothing. they are just the background of the website, if the installer doesent pop up, it means you just have to reeboot safari and try again. ther is absolutly no risk, because you do not have to reeboot your ipod, this just installs cydia like an app would,
Some things don't seem to work with iOS4/iPhone 4. For example I can't get SBSettings to work. It installs successfully, but I can't open it or find it in the settings menu. Is anybody else having this problem?
Also "Battery Percentage Theme" doesn't work and when I installed "Lockdown", my iPhone went into safe mode and wouldn't come out until I removed the app.

If ur new to jailbreaking or not really tech savvy let me give a word of caution. Please do ur own research on the advantage and disadvantages then make an educated decision. If this is ur 1st and/or only device ie iPod/iPhone I would advise u don't jailbreak. However if your the adventurous type or have spare/older device you can tinker around with and not lose to much sleep over altering it then by all means go for it. There are things you can do that are really cool that apple wouldn't approve of for what ever reason, but that does come at a bit of a price. Do your own research, don't be influenced by what someone ells thinks is cool, and choose carefully. There's no sence rushing into it. you can still jailbreak nextweek, next month, even next year. Good luck.

An iPod gets bricked when the operating system becomes inaccessible to iTunes. If iTunes can't see your device, you can't restore it. If you can't restore it, the it's bricked -- at which point you will most likely need to send it to Apple (which may refuse to service it if it's jailbroken).
Jailbreaking, in general, shouldn't brick your device. If you don't know what you're doing, however, it is technically possible to delete necessary system file and damage your OS enough to brick your phone. You can do this to a computer as well, of course, but the difference is that iPods and iPhones can't be booted off a CD, so if you're OS is too damaged, there's really no easy way to circumvent it.
Now, keep in mind that the JailbreakMe method is, for all intents and purposes, a security exploit -- a massive one, at that. You can bet that Apple will be patching it very, very soon, and not just to be mean to jailbreakers, but simply because if someone can jailbreak your device from a website, there's no limit to what they can do to it. We're lucky that the folks behind JailbreakMe were not sociopathic hackers.
That said, I tried it on my iPad (which I own strictly for entertainment purposes, unlike my iPhone) and it worked fine. It's kind of a big thrill to be running Final Fantasy III on it, even if it was a pain in the butt to get it to work.
Then what bricks your iPod? Sorry for all of the questions, I jus don't want to spend another 300 something dollars on a new iPod if something happens if I jailbreak it.
Older jailbreaks and messing with your device once it's jailbroken (i.e - deleting/changing important files).
It is extremely unlikely that your device will become bricked. I've jailbroken my iPhones (and my friends iPhone) probably about 10 times since the very first jailbreak was released. Never had any bricking.

Definitely. Unfortunately, I don't believe that there's an computer-based jb method that works with iTunes 9.2 (as far as I know). That's why JailbreakMe made such a stir.
I just thought, now that the iPhone 4 has been jailbroken, there could be some new stuff that takes advantage of the iPhone 4's features. For example a lockscreen that uses the front-facing camera to recognise your face and unlock your phone (with a password for back-up). Also the gyroscope could be useful, not sure what for, but there must be something using the gyroscope that Apple wouldn't allow.

Try reading the description in Cydia ;), SBSettings is activated by sliding across the status bar (where the time, carrier etc is, from left to right), which will activate the drop down menu. The more button will bring up the SBSettings app, which allows you to set the toggles, hide apps, and enable battery percentage. Lockdown most likely isn't updated for 4.0.

Great post IMO, I won't even help my friends JB their phones unless they can tell me what exactly it does. One friend has messed up her 3GS pretty bad because she just started installing/deleting randomly, and I had to restore her device :(
But yea, nice warning to people that they really need to understand what they're doing. I feel it's going to be especially bad with such a crazy-easy method this time. When it was harder to JB in the past, it kept the uneducated from attempting it.

Actually if you decide to go from a jailbreak to default iOS again you want to restore to new device (losing your saved game data). I always caution people that want to jailbreak and restore to not restore to a backup. You will not have access to 500MB of storage space on the internal hard drive if you restore to a backup (unless you restore to a backup you created before you were jailbroken).

Actually I was thinking of the upgrade process. Never upgrade a jailbroken device through iTunes (to a new iOS) until you have restored it to default settings first. Still I prefer to restore to a new device as there have been known problems with some app store apps being corrupted (I had that problem once).
But anyways the 500MB information is listed here: http://theappleblog.com/2009/03/11/jailbreak-five-things-you-need-to-know/
It is a quick explanation of what actually happens when you jailbreak your device. And the 500MB isn't lost as the writer explains, it just is no longer available to you. Anyway 500MB is a lot for some of us that have smaller storage devices considering iOS 4 takes up about 2GB of space (with the default apps) before you install app one.
Mobile Terminal won't work. :(

You could brick it by SSHing into the system files and deleting absolutely everything.
That would truly f*** your iPod over, but you have to very deliberately want to do it.

I'm guessing some JB stuff is still left on the device? But I don't understand, I thought restoring (either way) removed all JB data. I've never noticed it, and tbh I don't really mind loosing 500MB now that I have a 32GB iPhone.

That's the only thing I can think of, except the JB stuff is nowhere near 500MB. The download isn't even 1MB.

There is definitely JB stuff that gets written somewhere into low level code. I can't provide the links, but remember reading about a number of apps (through cydia) that would continue to leave their icon on the device if you did not delete them prior to doing a restore.
I am assuming that some JB software reserves memory space for various functions, and once written, the reserve remains, and since the restore is not really a low level format, the system just goes out and looks to see what is available..

You have no idea what you're talking about. Nothing gets written into code, that doesn't make sense. Also memory is not the same as disk space, programs using/reserving memory has no effect on disk space.
The firmware is on a separate partition than your apps and media. I suspect either they chose a too large size for the firmware partition, or there is junk in their temp directories.

JohnnyB1981, slimothy, thanks, but i can't solve this problem. If i send already redeemed code, i can see only empty screen (on screenshot). If i send right code, download will started...
Today i restored factory settings, and there is same problem :(
This means, that my problem is not JB, but problem in official firmware or apple store

Have you tried redeeming in iTunes on your PC or Mac instead of on your device itself? I didn't clarify, but that's how I redeemed my code, then synced to my device in iTunes.
I'm still hesitant... Convince me?

Did something really stupid yesterday, I decided to bite the bullet and try it out. Then I regretted it and uninstalled the program. But I guess it's still jailbroken, correct? So when I want to reinstall Cydia should I just go back to jailbreakme? Sorry if this sounds really dumb, I was an idiot for jailbreaking when I didn't want to. And I don't want to screw it up. I hope I don't have to restore.
Edit: If I Backup and then restore to factory setting, then I restore it from that backup, will it still be unjailbroken where I can jailbreak it again?

Your device will be jailbroken unless you have restored it in iTunes.
If you backup and restore in iTunes then it will remove the jailbreak and yes you can jailbreak it again if you want to.

I've never jailbroken. Here's a scenario I'm confused about. Let's say I backup first, jailbreak, then play 2 or 3 hours of an RPG I was playing before I jailbroke. Now let's say I don't want to be jailbroken anymore, so I do a restore from last backup I did before jailbreaking. Won't I lose 2-3 hrs. of progress in that RPG?
I guess I'm just confused on the whole jailbreaking and backing up thing.

If you restore from a backup ALL of your applications' data, pictures, system settings will return to the time when you made the backup.
So, if you just want to play with jailbreaking - don't do anything you mind undoing after said backup. (Or play games like The Quest which allow you to transfer save files via iTunes... ;))
I don't know what happens if you restore the kosher iOS with a backup taken while you were jailbroken.

Well after you've played 2-3 hours of your RPG just sync again through itunes to back it up before you restore it and remove the jailbreak, that way you wont lose anything, I honestly don't know why people think you cant use Itunes in the normal way after jailbreaking...

Won't that overwrite the pre jailbreak backup file when you sync and backup after being jailbroken? I guess I can just save a copy of the backup folder to the desktop so I can always have that pre jailbreak backup.

I unjailbroke (if that's a term) last night. Cydia kept crashing on me. Must have downloaded a corrupt source and I didn't trust myself enough to fix it by SSH'ing. Being my first time to jailbreak, I wasn't impressed much. Maybe I didn't get the whole experience. I think you can do much more with Cydia if you have an iphone. The touch is limited to themes, which I really liked, and some really crappy games. I downloaded the NES emulator and the roms, which was cool but somewhat hard to control. I forgot how terrible NES graphics are. Streaming movies is cool, but terrible quality and didn't see anything in English, so deleted right away. Got the Genesis emulator and tried to install the rom pack and that's when it froze. When I restarted Cydia never would open again. Anyway I may jailbreak again later. Sorry for the long post.

The touch and phone run the same iOS, so everything you do with one you can do with the other. With the obvious exception of apps that require hardware you don't have (eg a gps app on the touch).
All of the important stuff is device-agnostic:
- SBSettings: quickly toggle anything toggleable (wifi, Bluetooth, 3G unrestricted, etc); change brightness, see free ram, remove all bg processes, task list, respring/reboot/turnoff; all within a simple swipe+tap. Save battery life by managing your power.
- Winterboard: change the look of any image in GUI easily... Complete customization freedom, brilliantly implemented.
- download plugins for mail attachments and Safari (how important is that!)
- don't show recently used apps on the appswitcher, only apps actually running in the background (now the appswitcher makes sense)
- worried about double-tapping the home button all the time? No need with Activator, you can eg double tap the statusbar instead.
- iFile: complete file manager a la Finder or Explorer. Do everything, move files around, zip/unzip, install debs, play videos you've downloaded from the web through Safari, etc.
- Terminal: command prompt so you can do l33t stuff like set permissions and create symlinks.
- ultrasn0w: unlock any phone (which is now legal in the US, and has been in many countries already)
- create a wifi hotspot for your friends with MyWi.
- make the device think it's on wifi even though it's on 3G, so you can watch high-res YouTube, download large apps from the AppStore, etc.
I could go on and on, but I'm typing on my iPhone and I want to stop. Anyways please understand there is a world of possibilities out there to do amazing things with these little computers. By "jailbreaking" you are only giving yourself permission to be a system administrator like on you desktop or laptop. It's not something you would need to "undo" because nothing has changed but that.

Hi guys, quick question and please dont flame for my noobiness. I have searched google and get links to scam ipod sites.
I have iPod 3GS with iOS 3.1.3 and want to Jailbreak. (My itunes is 9.1.x)
What are the first things to do? Besides backing up apps/music?? I read you sorta need to back up your current firmware with iTunes incase you dont want JB any more. I have no idea how to do this.
Also should I just wait till the new JB comes out or is JB 4.0 fine on a 3GS iTouch?
And should I update to iOS 4 (not 4.0.x since thats not JB-able yet) or does that cause too many issues like draining battery, apps crashing/not working. Any sort of advice would be great.

You don't need to backup your firmware - you can't really. You just need to go to jailbreakme.com and follow the instructions.
*the only important thing is this* when you start Cydia for the first time click - make my life easier. It will back up some important stuff about your device so that you can restore to 3.1.3 if you want.
See Apple has actually locked out anything below 4.0 for restoring so you can't officially restore to 3.1.3. You would have to go to 4.0. This would be true even if you didn't jailbreak, so it isn't the jailbreaking's fault.
Also should I just wait till the new JB comes out or is JB 4.0 fine on a 3GS iTouch?

I would be interested to here this too. I am staying at 3.1.1 jailbroken because I don't see a huge advantage to 4.0 yet but I might if I knew it wouldn't hurt performance.

Yes, but A4 devices only. I don't understand why the dev team didn't kill the rumor that it was for all devices, and early on. They knew it was current gen devices only. What did they gain by only announcing it was A4-only (iPhone 4, iPod touch 4G, iPad) only now? Seems like they could have saved everyone, including themselves, a lot of grief by killing that rumor early on.
