Hey guys,
I actually just jailbroke my ipod from jailbreakme.com and everythings been done for a little while, but I have no idea what to do. Could anyone tell me, or provide a link to somewhere where it says what i should do after jailbreaking? I dont just want to download a bunch of stuff from cydia because i dont know what is what. And im kind of afraid to do anything for fear of messing up my ipod. Basically i want to know what stuff i should download and what stuff i have to use to make everything like custom.

Thanks.

First things first:

To download awesome themes, get winterboard.

Also, get SBSettings.

If you want to have access to your iPod's files, get OpenSSH.

Yes, SBSettings and winterboard are a must.

Although I wouldn't use OpenSSH until you are more familiar with jailbreaking. Before you do start to use SSH, go and watch some videos on youtube to learn how to do it correctly. If you accidently mess up some system files there's a chance that you could brick your device.

In cydia, go to Sections, then Themes. Install them and go to the winterboard app to apply them.

SBSettings gives you control of wifi, bluetooth, brightness, processes etc from swiping along the top bar. Think of it as a task manager on a PC.

Well, you can get themes from Cydia, but in my experience, most themes from Cydia aren't very good. If you want nice themes, you should visit Macthemes.net. They have a lot of nice themes there. Like others have said, SBSettings is a must. Also, if you're on iOS4, definitely check out Infinifolders. Apple's Folders can only hold a maximum of 12 applications, but with Infinifolders, that limit has been broken and it can now hold an infinite amount (I cannot confirm this, but it holds more than 12 :P).

how do you do custom backgrounds behind the icons?

Go into winterboard, then switch on "user background".

I think the question is more technical than you guys think.

First of all, make sure that you choose
"developer no filters"

If you already chosen then you will have a little more access to a few packages, & if you've already chosen a different option you can change it back later. Make sure you update all in your "changes" section after the initial download.

Those are always the first steps in making sure your running efficiently, don't go downloading all these themes and winterboard everyone is so excited about before your core packages are updated.

Make sure to let all the spinners taskbar and main screen are done before you tap your prompts when downloading packages.

Use your instincs & make wise disicions about what your installing otherwise you'll just be deleting packages or start experiencing poor performance from piling on so much unneeded crap.

Anyone else have any technical pointers please add to the thread.....

you may not save a life but you might just save a device.

This is the type of stuff that gets you into trouble, especially after the OP said he didn't just want to go ripping through without proper set up & knowledge.

Way to address his needs.

"first things first"???

Lol that's not what I would do first.

First thing to do: Don't freeze your iphone for 3 hours like I did :P
Eventually it went back to normal and its still jailbroken, haven't had a problem since.

I suggest getting the five-column springboard and five-icon dock, SBsettings, WinterBoard, Backgrounder, ProSwitcher (as an add-on for Backgrounder), and MxTube. All of these are free.

If you're afraid of messing up your iDevice, don't get iFile; If you're not absolutely positively sure that you know what you're doing, you could SERIOUSLY mess some things up.
