I've got an iPod touch 2G, don't have any SHSH blobs saved for 3.1.2 or 3.1.3, I do have them for 4.0, 4.0.2 and 4.1 though, so assuming 4.1 is stable and doesn't have the memory problems of 4.0 I might consider upgrading.

I can downgrade it to 3.0 or anything earlier, as iTunes 8.2.0 and lower don't verify the restore with Apple. I suppose I could do anything from 2.1 to 3.0, but I figure 2.2.1 is the best option of the 2.x series.

What are the pros & cons of each version? I've read that 3.0 is buggy (makes sense as it's a point-zero release), and that it has both better and worse battery life and better and worse WiFi performance.

Featurewise I'm not too concerned, I don't make use of copy & paste, in fact it rather annoys me, and I disable spotlight as well. What I am concerned about is game compatibility - will I be running into problems with a lot of games not running on 2.2.1? Would I have similar issues in 3.0? (Given that out of memory issues in 4.0 is why I want to downgrade, losing a bunch of games the other way would be a pain in the ass). Do all games released on a certain date require whatever is the current firmware revision, or did they take into account that some people with an iPod touch wouldn't pay $10 to upgrade and therefore have older firmware?

Which version will serve me better overall?
