View Full Version : Watchmen..
Okay, this is very off-topic but I think it's fine..
I just bought the graphic novel today and was wondering if anyone here has read it? I would love to talk about this book once I've read a bit more.
**Also, has anyone read the book AND watched the movie? Would you recommend seeing it?

Saw the movie, but to be honest, it sucked. It felt slow and exaggerated. (3 hours). I flipped through the graphic novel, and it seems to be much better. Do yourself a favor and don't watch it, unless you like starring at Dr. Manhattan's penis. The only cool thing was Rorschach.

coconut, maybe you are doing it backwards. I have heard that the movie is so complicated, that if you dont follow along with everything, you wont understand it at all. I myself have read the novel and have yet to see the movie (probably this weekend though) so i would love to talk about it.

Now tell me something, (unless its a spoiler, then please don't!!) but does Rorschach wear a mask? Because I always thought that it was his actual face cause of how it changes all the time.
I have yet to open the book, so that is why I know nothing. I hope to start reading tonight.

The movie is so ridiculously confusing. I went to the movies with another guy and 3 girls at the midnight showing. The 3 girls kept crashing in the theater, and when they woke up, they knew as much that had gone in as I and my other friend did...

Thats one of the really cool things. It is a mask, but in the novel, he considers it his "face." He has spent so much time as Rorschach he has literally become him. He considers his real personality (Walter Kovaks) to be sort of like a costume.
And yes it does change, based on his mood i believe.

The Graphic novel is absolutely amazing....the movie is pretty good. Actually I liked the movie. I just saw it in IMAX tonight and it is fairly faithful to the novel. Honestly though I can't say I would have enjoyed it as much, had I not already been a fan and already read the novel. Definitely will find it's way into my DVD collection, next to the Dark Knight:D

Not on his mood. It just changes randomly since there's this actual liquid in the fabric that morphs symmetrically.
I definitely see the movie. Maybe convince so friends to go with me. It's no doubt gonna be complicated the graphic novel was (but in the end it all clicked into place). I'll probably reread it, just to prep for the movie.

V for Vendetta, Kingdom Come, Batman:The Dark Knight Returns (by Frank Miller) And of course Watchmen...

If you are into batman, definitely get Year One (also by Frank) and my personal fave, The Long Halloween (Jeph Loeb, he also writes the tv show Heroes)
Recently i have been getting completely into Image Comics and a ton of Robert Kirkman stuff, I picked up the whole series of The Walking Dead in trade paperbacks, and i read the entire thing. Really good stuff, cant wait for vol 10. I also ordered Invincible by him, as well as the astounding wolfman, also by him.
If you have any questions about anything, just ask. If i were you i would get The Walking Dead first, it is a great zombie series with great action, great drama, and an overall great story.
If you arent sold on it, you can read the first issue of any image comic here (http://www.imagecomics.com/onlinecomics.php).
PS: If you end up liking Watchmen, Check out The Nightly News, it is one of those intellectual comics like watchmen where you actually get sucked into it.

Well, I for one saw the movie without ever reading the graphic novel. I went into it knowing the basic plot though. I really enjoyed the movie and followed it quite easily. So did my girlfriend. It is a looong movie, but I liked it a lot. If you're an attentive person and can pay attention to detail, you'll have no problem with the movie being ''confusing''.

/lurking. :)
I've read the comics and agree that the series is one of the greatest ever. I'm going to see the film tonight, and after the reviews from friends, I'm expecting to be reasonably pleased. Apparently Snyder does his best to use the original text, but I also hear a lot is missed out. (One of note is the continuing discussions between Rorchach and his psychiatrist- very dark in the comics)
On recommending other comics - The Invisibles is very good (but I'm a big fan of Grant Morrison - Seaguy/Animal Man and his run on New X-Men was good too)
The Neil Gaiman Sandman series is an obvious classic, and I'll echo Preacher- one of the first comics I read actually!
From Image, the main one I'd recommend is Bone. Brilliant, funny, but not at all like Watchmen. One of my favourites though.
Oh, and Transmetropolitan is very good (about a futuristic gonzo reporter - very similar to Hunter S Thompson :D )
I know this might be going off topic now, but I just picked up Ghostbusters: Legion, and it was brilliant! :D Just like the films - great stuff!
Oh, and hello everyone! :)

All are great, I would also recommend Ronin, and SCUD. As far as Watchmen is concerned...they did leave a lot out....BUT THEY PUT A LOT IN!! I found myself finishing the sentences of the on screem characters. I mean the dialog is pulled almost word for word...I felt like Zack made the movie for Me! The only thing is Dr. Manhattan...his sudden acceptance of earth's plight seemed rushed in the movie. In the comics he didn't come off nearly as considerate.
Wow so far I'm up to the part where Doctor Manhattan was accused of giving cancer to people.. I got so aggravated.
And man!, the comedian. The flashbacks about him are shocking lol.

It's all opinion I guess. I just wasn't a fan. I'm glad you guys enjoyed it though.
I loved the movie, mind you I also love Fight Club. Another great dense and dark flick told in a film noir introspective style.
Also, Watchmen the Saturday Morning Cartoon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDDHHrt6l4w
Polar opposite of the book/movie. ;)

Yeah, didn't it happen twice? By the super hero he tried to rape, and the Vietnamese girl who he got pregnant?
seems like a good movie. can't wait to watch it.

I think he only gets it cut when by the Vietnamese girl. I think he just gets beat up when he tries to rape the Silk Spectre.

Oh, I thought she like clawed or something at his face, which led to him getting mad and beating her up... but then Hooded Justice beat the shit out of him.

Nah, only once. But yes, i was referring to the Vietnamese chick. "Ahhh you bitch!" BAM BAM DEAD.
Also it really shows how the doc feels towards humans. I dont remember the exact quote but i think he said something like he could have made it shoot flowers(?) or or something and he didnt.

I wanted to watch the movie. But I googled why it was rated R and it said there was nudity. (language and violence doesn't matter)
How much Nudity is there? Alot? not that much? etc.
I'm not over 18, so If I go with my older sibblings to let me into the theatre it'll be weird if there is nudity.

Yeah, the comedian's like "oh you could've made it into steam, or make it evaporate.." or something like that.. But man, I just read even more last night and today, and is it awesome! It keeps getting better and better. I'm up to the part where Dr. Manhattan goes to Mars cause he can't take it anymore.
Did anybody read the little bits in between each chapter?

Yes I have read the "ENTIRE" book multiple times. The pirate series illustrates how in a world where superhero's are real, nobody wants to read about them anymore, hence the popularity of "pirate" comics. It's also an allegory to Ozymandia's story. Try and see how many "smiley faces" you can find in the novel....Glad you're loving it, I wish everyone would read it.
