View Full Version : Zenonia – upcoming RPG game by Gamevil
browsed around the gamevil forums. they got this RPG game called Zenonia and it looks a lot better than Path of a Warrior. I believe they made the game baseball superstars 09 for the iphone too. here is a link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnkFuiG-AAU) to a trailer of the game.
can't wait!

Korean mobile publisher Gamevil has done extremely well with Baseball Superstars 2009, and it will soon brings its second game to the App Store: an action-RPG called Zenonia.
Zenonia has been wildly popular in the Korean mobile market, selling 600,000 copies so far, and we can see why. The game looks like a souped-up version of Legend of Zelda: A Link To the Past for the SNES, with more animation, brighter colors, and more complex gameplay.
You play from the same overhead perspective, using a virtual d-pad and buttons to move your character, mount attacks, and use skills. A double-tap in a direction executes a dash attack, and touching slots at the bottom of the screen pulls off special magical techniques.
But Zenonia also has the gameplay guts of a full RPG. You talk to townsfolk to get quests, which take you all over the map and earn you experience points. There are literally thousands of weapons and items to collect and a full Diablo-like skill tree.
Gamevil digs down all the way to the little details. For instance, if you're carrying too much stuff, you'll be unable to move quickly. The game has a 24-hour clock, day/night cycle, and realistic weather. This clearly isn't a casual offering; Gamevil claims that the full adventure clocks in at around 40 hours of gameplay. The company intends to add special micropayment-driven content like magic weapons when iPhone OS 3.0 rolls around, too.
The game was still in Korean when we played it, so we didn't get a real clear idea of the story, other than the fact that it revolves standard good vs. evil themes. The moral dichotomy that seems tio be all the rage in game design these days is present in Zenonia as well, so your character can turn towards the dark side if you make the wrong choices.
Zenonia should be out sometime in May. The pricepoint is still under discussion, but Gamevil is looking at $5.99 or above, which seems reasonable to us for a game of this scope. We'll have screens and video up later today.

I'd get it just for the hot chicks they show at the beginning of each stage. But they neeeeeed to work on those sound effects. The main character sounds like he was yanked of of an '80s saturday morning cartoon.
And am I the only one that's bugged by how the epic picture in the title screen in no way resembles the game's graphics?
I tried to get into the multiplayer for POW, but personally I like an rpg with a good story. hopefully they will deliver.

Is it confirmed that it's coming for the iPhone? Those youtube comments read like it's for other mobile devices.

They never do. All the RPGs in the Appstore are like that. And it always bugs me too.
The special effects look very cool, the grunting...not cool after awhile I would think. We'll see what becomes of this title. I'd like a good RPG, but I want one that is modern...as in "looks cool"

The graphics and sounds remind me of Secret of Mana, especially when you can see the HP damaged inflicted! Also adore the little whistle "speech bubble" the avatar dilepicts when he's unlocked a secret cave entrance. Small details like like, and the accompanying music tune, suggest this could weave a strong emotional attachment not experienced since Final Fantasy VII.
Anyone know Korean language who could offer their services to Gamevil??? I really would like to try this!!!!

There were only three posts in the thread where this came from, and nothing indicated an iPhone release. I also did a search of their forums and turned up nothing else about the game. If you check their news section of late, the only mention of iPhone is in relation to their baseball game, and all the other current stuff indicates that they are focusing on the Android platform. This looks like it would be a fun game, but I wouldn't get any hopes up of it coming to an iDevice any time soon.

When I heard that Gamevil would be developing for the iphone/ipotch I was stoked and bought baseball superstars right away and it rocked!!
I really like the variety of games that Gamevil has on their website and I am excited to see this coming to the app store. Count me in as a purchaser when this is available.

Goodbye 250+ hours of your life.
lmao nothx.
What sucks though is that the SMT games didn't do that great in NA, due to Square turning most PS owners into idiot weaboos, with hardons for gigantic swords wielded by little boys. I remember Persona being so goddamned hard, but incredibly fun. I never finished it. I think I had like 60+ hours or something, at like 50%.
God, those games are bonkers. I know one of them has Jesus as a boss mob. lol, wtf?

Would rather have 1 solid game than 20 semi-decent games personally.
Yea, there is some interesting characters in the series.
The first part of the second game (for PSX) has Hitler, which is why it wasn't brought over to the states. ^ ^

I wanted to get a confirmation on this, so I actually dropped an email to Gamevil, and it looks like we're in luck! Here's my original question and the response:
[me]"There has been some talk lately on the Touch Arcade forums (specifically, here: http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=6748) that Zenonia was being developed for the iPhone. Is there any truth to that? If it's not currently being developed, are there any plans to pursue it in the future? Thanks for your time and any information you can provide."
[Gamevil]"Yes this is true and the launch date has not been confirmed yet, but we are targeting the next quarter. Please follow us on twitter: http://twitter.com/gamevil to get the latest updates."
All I can say is that I hope the controls are worked out better than the ones for Opal's Quest.

I cant wait for this game to come out in May. Im so excited this game reminds me of final fantasy crystal chronicles. From what the video looks like. The game has different fighting like styles like single handed or duel wielding and more. That is great because it adds more ways to kick butt. The graphics arent that bad. I wish it was 3D but it still looks good anyways. This is going to be an awsome game when released. It looks like a must buy for Action RPG Fans.

Hmm,
Well Gamevil made SS Baseball accessible to the English speaking audience. Although Zenonia clearly requires much more translation, I have my faith in Gamevil doing the same. A simple localization would make them multiples of more money. Why wouldn't they?
Btw, whether it's in English or not it still should be in the App Store, right?

Thank you all for your support.Idea, enhance the control pad with the wheel from iDracula. See with the wheel, you can move different directions without taking your finger off the screen. With the directional pad you have to take your finger off and on, making you disoriented.
i cant wait for this game!!

are you sure you have to remove your finger. i played some game (cant remember what though) where you just move across to the other arrow. no lift needed.
still cant wait for this game. but can i just say dont rush it. make sure its done right as you dont want to be getting quest information and you are told do something different to what your meant to be doing.
In my opinion the cross is better like wheel in iDracula:) but an Inotia: LoF have nice control.

@arta & jjr
Not sure if that works with Zenonia.
It worked for iDracula since you move freely with the need to aim at enemies coming in from any direction.
However, think you're playing the first Zelda (NES), iDracula's control scheme wouldn't work too well, IMO.
Zelda like games are easier to play with the d-pad, since the positioning/movement of the character is aligned and locked/snapped to a grid (they move in predetermined increments along an invisible row or column).
Plus all of the objects and enemies in game are also aligned to a grid (think Final Fantasy).
Therefore, giving too much freedom in control, to a game environment with less freedom makes it harder to control. It's easier to have a control that utilizes such grid-like environment instead.
A tweak to the SS Baseball control should do. Even that, I don't think you have to constantly lift your thumb to change your direction. Although doing so might be helpful in preventing over-moving your character.
Btw,
@hes72
Great news Han!
Would there be a Korean version available earlier?
Can't wait to get my hands on this. May just seems too far away~
Thats what i said, i prefer cross (d-pad) i dont like wheel (iDracula):) sorry my bad for non clear post.

thats because non korean/japanese devs try to pull it off as a "jap/kor-rpg"
with manga like pictures to sell...then you play it and know your NOT playing one LOL

I don't like the control. While the movement is locked to grid, it feels tedious to use that cross where we have to take our fingers of the screen to change direction.
It can use the control method in Bobby Carrot and Mouse About.I'm talking about the slide-anywhere control which can work well with this. It doesn't have to be 'anywhere' though, it can be in one certain position like PacMan. But I just feel the control in Pacman is not as good as Mouse About.
My other concern is the menu, hopefully they tweak it so it works like iGames. It's so unlike iGames to have to choose the menu with d-pad and select with a button. We should be able to select what we want by simply tapping it.
If those 2 are fixed, this would be an instant buy for me :)

I agree Bobby Carrot has a good control method for games like Zenonia. Or even the control used in some RPG games on the DS (pointing with the stylus) would work great.
But I seriously doubt Gamevil will implement any of them, looking at their history of iPhone games (personal experience being SS Baseball). Plus, the fact that they're just "porting" their existing mobile games, it is all the more unlikely they'll change much. Still have my fingers crossed though.
As for navigating menus, from my experience with Gamevil's SS Baseball, I had no problems at all. I ended up navigating the menu of SS Baseball so much that now I could get to anywhere I want in a breeze. It reminded me of playing Final Fantasy, where you play it so long you don't even think or look when quickly going through menus.
So, yeah it would be a big plus if Gamevil utilizes the touch screen much better.. but even if they don't... it won't hinder much from a "conventional" RPG experience.
Well this is just my opinion stating that you shouldn't give up on playing Zenonia just because the controls ^^
Btw,
Doesn't Bobby Carrot require lifting your finger at times for changing direction?
Also, I don't think you have to lift your fingers to change direction with the d-pad of Zenonia. I'm assuming it works like the d-pad used for the nes/snes emulators for the iPhone. Although with those d-pads, if you don't tap to move and lift to change directions, you'll end up moving the player too much before turning in the direction you intend to.
Hence, I hope they optimize the their d-pad for the iPhone so it is much more controllable without making the player go all over the place.

For those of you saying the iDracula wheel or Virtual Joystick will make you go past your target when you want to run up to one object, the solution is easy:
Use the wheel/ joystick without taking your finger off the wheel/ joystick to move around the big map, then when you get near your enemy/ doorway etc, simply take your finger off and tap the "Up/ Down/ Left/ Right" parts like a virtual d-pad. :)

Ok well I kinda translated the screen on the very bottom page.
There will be an HP and SP gage bar on the bottom. There will also be 5 quick slots on your screen. There will also be an active skill slot right next to the quick slots and below your SP bar. The bug on that screen is called a Spinbug  I don't think I translated that one right but you guys all get the point. The character infos seem a little long but I read the first part of the knight looking character.
It reads something like his dad got killed so he's seeking to fight for revenge something on those lines. Well, there you go Zenonia geeks :p
EDIT: His dad actually died suddenly so he's out to find out why he died so suddenly. Then he meets up with some girl and then I don't understand the rest.

The video looks great. I still am not happy with any RPG I have purchased. Some are.......okay. But nothing to blow my mind.
iphonegamenetwork:
Gamevil have shared with us an early build of their*upcoming fantasy RPG ?Zenonia?. Built from a Korean mobile game of the same name the game features classic Zelda meets Final Fantasy gameplay with real time battles mixed with FF style leveling up and inventories.
The story sees you playing a mysterious kid called Regrett, who is trying to uncover the his fathers death and a greater unexplained evil. The game is still in it's early stages, and much of the dialogue between my character and NPCs have not been translated, but I have already taken on various errands around the village and uncovered a storyline that have put bigger events in motion.
Due to the extent of the un-translated text I don't want to play any more until it's fixed as I'm no doubt missing important plot points. But I can safely say that it's an engrossing game which Gameveil state delivers more than 40 hours worth of gameplay. (con't - posting from ps3 :( )
Graphically it features a style similar to the earlier 2D Zelda games, but even so, the game worlds are full of flora and fauna to interact with. The music features a few glitches such as pops in the looping, but overall fits well within the fantasy theme.
Controls feature an onscreen d-pad and action button, and work petty well with both character motion, fighting and navigating the menus and your character inventory.
Look for more on the game soon, in the meantime check out screenshots from the current build. This game is seriously awesome so far. The on screen D-Pad actually doesn?t bother me much at all! I almost don?t want to start playing the early build, cuz I know I?ll get addicted, and then have to start over when the official version is released hehe.
Ok I just killed like 2 hours on this game, even without being able to read like 70% of the text... I must force myself to stop! This will definitely e a must-have game when it?s released!....

Hey. You three above me. Learn to read the original post IN ITS ENTIRETY before posting in any thread. Ever.
The company intends to add special micropayment-driven content like magic weapons when iPhone OS 3.0 rolls around, too.
I am extremely interested in playing this game. But I may just remove it from my iPhone when 3.0 comes out, as I don't like the idea that my character may no longer be at his/her max potential w/o spending more money. Micropayment stuff should always strive to increase the amount of time you spent in a game (usually by adding new content), not reduce it by making you more overpowered. I'll take back my complaint if these magic weapons don't make you more powerful, but instead completely change the way your character plays so it feels like there's a lot of added replay value.
Hey. You three above me. Learn to read the original post IN ITS ENTIRETY before posting in any thread. EverHow about you just chill the **** out? It's not that serious, you could have simply directed everyone to the info without acting like a dumb spaz.

Now I never played Zelda as I never posessed relevant consoles, but from what I heard the series has really good environmental puzzles. Does this game have them too? Because from the video combat doesn't look all that exciting.
Also, the problem with premium weapons is the balance. I.e. if they make it still challeging for players with premium stuff, it could be frustratingly difficult for normal players.
Honestly, micro-transactions should be reserved for adventure packs and expansions, rather than items.

Gosh I can't wait for this game. Chronicles of Inotia and Dungeon and Hero look like poo compared to this game.
I WANT THIS GAME SO BAD.
Well, I have 7 hours of game on Zenonia, which was kindly sent to me by Gamevil, all I can say it that this game is from far the best rpg of the iPhone.
Plus, it could be the best iPhone game to my eyes, if... there was better control, all the button are great but the moves can become terrible during boss fight for exemple.
For the RPG's fan that just awesome, lot of stuff, great story, ton of monster to xp (I played lot of Diablo2 and some mmo ;p), Night/day system, Hunger system (which is a bit annoying :p), you can cast a spell with tracing on the touchscreen.
What this game is missing to my eyes to best more than great is: "miniboss" monster which would appear randomly and have better loot, better pad (like why not a joystick?:x), for the rest it's not yet 100% translated so I can't yet understand all NPC etc
It's announced to be as a GREAT game, certainly a must have. (7hours I said and maybe 1/5 the entire map played, level 28)
To be honnest this game could be more expensive than DS games. (do we say more expensive? xD french inside)

Thanks for the info! Sounds great already~
As for controls, I was concerned even after the gameplay video.
Personally a joystick wouldn't solve the problem. Also, not having to lift to change directions is not the issue either (I mentioned you won't have to lift from the beginning of my post here).
As seen from the videos, having to precisely move your player in a limited grid based positioning/moving environment with a dpad/joypad/idracula-360-control-pad is the problem. The slightest touch in an unintended direction, which is prone to be done with the above control schemes (the directions are crammed altogether in small space!), already advances your player in that unwanted grid position. Such are not a problem for games like Hero of Sparta or iDracula, where the player moves in a 360 freely movable environment.
Hence, I was hoping for a Bobby carrot like control scheme or an optimized d-pad, where the up/down/right/left directions are mapped to each edge of the screen. If so, no more would unintended movement be made nor even erroneously pressing the wrong direction on a small control pad (All the directions are mapped so close to each other!)
The balloon head game also implement a similar control method. The only problem being the left/right/jump, although being mapped on each edge of the screen, the developer did not allocate the entire edge as the button. They are small buttons at each edge. Therefore, the game solves only one of the two problems I mentioned above.
Hence, my point is... Gamevil plz change the control method~~

Wow thanks -- I am SO sold on this game. I'm a sucker for different classes, and it sounds like they have that base covered.
I'd be curious to hear more about the controls. How does it compare to the point & click controls in CoI (which I didn't much care for)? Is the d-pad preferable to that control scheme?

Ooo, an action-oriented Zelda-ish title of iPhone? I'm intrigued.
It looks like a fairly traditional Korean MMO in the sense that you walk around, kill monsters, and the interface shows what looks like a quick-select bar for various skills, much like you see in MMORPGs that allow you to use quick-slots on the F1-F12 keys to swiftly activate magic, skills or items.
I hope these slots on the iDevices won't be too small, or it could be a hassle to have to push the tiny buttons in the middle of a fight and accidentally use up your last health potion when you don't need it.
I could have missed this, and forgive me if I did, but does anyone know if this is a solely single-player affair, multiplayer only, or both?

Hi everyone, this is Young. I wrote the preview for Zenonia. I was browsing through some of the comments and thought I'd answer some questions that were posted.
I'd be curious to hear more about the controls. How does it compare to the point & click controls in CoI (which I didn't much care for)? Is the d-pad preferable to that control scheme?
The d-pad is definitely better than the point & click method. You feel more in control of the game, and having played both Co and Zenonia, yeah, Zenonia thoroughly beats CoI on this. I do have to say though, Zenonia's controls, while good, aren't as good as say Hero of Sparta, which btw I feel has the best control scheme I've used.
I hope these slots on the iDevices won't be too small, or it could be a hassle to have to push the tiny buttons in the middle of a fight and accidentally use up your last health potion when you don't need it. I found that the slots on the interface aren't too small. As for the items, if you go to the preview and look at screen shot 3, you'll notice a circle with two green arrows on it. This is a quick slot for your items. You can scroll through them, if you set your items there, by flicking down.
The other slots are for your spells and skills. They're spaced apart far enough that they can be accessed easily. I don't think I made any mistakes with choosing them in-game.
Also, this is a single player game. There is a whole story line that takes about 40 hours to finish. Interestingly enough, though, there's a network option to see rankings, back up/restore your character, and some stuff in Korean about friends. Since I played an Alpha build, none of these worked.

Menu navigation is similar to Baseball Superstars 2009. Both these games are ports, so menu navigation and so forth isn't optimized for the iDevice. With the virtual d-pad, though, this is not an issue BTW, HI SHIGZEO!!!!!!!!

- Is the food/ weapon damage mechanic gets annoying i.e. do you have to do it too often?
- Are there environmental puzzles?
- does the game ramp up well from normal enemies to sub bosses to bosses? Are boss fight just slashing away or hitting weak points, stuff like that?

It doesn't get as annoying as it did in GTA: San Andreas. It actually takes a while for all these things to take affect. It's just enough to add an extra level of complexity to the game.
So far, I've played about 2+ hours, I haven't run across any environmental puzzles. This is more RPG than Adventure... more Secret of Mana than Legend of Zelda.
I haven't come across any bosses yet, but I believe there are bosses. I don't know any specifics concerning this. My guess, though, is that since this is not like The Legend of Zelda in terms of its philosophical take on gameplay it will not have a zelda-esque style boss battle.

I noticed in one of the videos some sort of "character" option at the start of the game which changed the appearance of the avatar. Does anyone know more about that? I thought the main character was pretty much set in stone and couldn't be customized

i read somewhere that you could choose between three people.i remember one of them is an assassin and they get two daggers(i think).i can't remember the rest but i'm guessing that they change your stats in the game.

There is only one playable character (the norm for an RPG of this type) but there are three classes. You also choose between good and evil at a point in the game. Can't give out too much information as it is currently a closed beta ;)

In our "edition" the beta version of this remarkable RPG at present is
persistently tested, we hasten to share with you the first impressions, in the portion of screenshots and specially written down video. The first that it would be desirable to note - on iPhone / iPod Touch there will be the Zelda. And the second - Koreans are able to do RPG. So, we will start: Transfer of game with Korean on English language is executed at present mediocre enough, some dialogues are not translated in general, but it at all does not prevent to play. Actually, and without knowledge of English language to play it will turn out quite. All dialogues and events are visually enough animated, the received missions appear in a special window, names, names and destinations are allocated by colour. Many subject dialogues can be passed simply, having pressed on skip. For game it is possible to create 3 profiles. To keep game it is possible at any moment. But here to find the menu for preservation not so it is simple. In the right top corner - the button инвентори. Инвентори by a call does not close all screen, but inscriptions and icons of subjects are executed very small. Without D-pad'a to operate it it would be impossible. There and then it is possible to look the, points, experience and that is surprising - the general menu where the preservation button was found out. In game there is inner clock, they do not correspond real (as we assumed earlier), depending on time of days illumination dynamically varies. The special attention needs to be pointed at shades - it is possible to see as by the ground floats a shade from a cloud. About game in twilight when the way shines only a lantern and there is nothing to speak, our impressions of the first decline неизгладимы. On the other hand - game very much and very quickly puts the battery. Yes, it can be a beta version lack, but developers have already provided a way of struggle against it: in options it is possible to choose quality of a drawing: low, mid, high. Though the drawing in game two-dimensional, switching-off of effects of illumination will help to hold on longer to gymnastics, but will not allow to take pleasure in all beauty of an excellent "8-bit" drawing. The weight of stock and ammunition plays the important role - if it above norm, our character starts to move very slowly. Also it will slowly move and on water. Other aspect - hunger if not to be supported, success in fight not to see, and also it will not turn out to reach the remote district. The sound in game of censures does not cause, however, we suggest to finish on it reading (Continuation follows!) and to familiarise with video, and on Zenonia you can set any interesting question in comments or at a forum. Probably even to leave the offer on game, and we with pleasure will transfer to its developers. Screenshots above, and also video, show only the game beginning, apparently (and on a card) it is necessary to play still oh as long...

You're new, so this is just an FYI, but you might want to check out the rules: The Rules (or Don't Do These Or You'll Get Banned) (http://forums.toucharcade.com/announcement.php?f=2). Specifically, the one about Please avoid correcting spelling and grammar...
By the way, I won't give any specifics, because I'm sure I probably shouldn't, but from what I've played so far Zenonia is pretty awesome (unfortunately, the version I'm testing isn't 100% translated yet)...

What do they mean by "assist user communites"? Rankings? Multiplayer? Mods?
And that part about looking into the iPhone/iPod touch 3.0 API to "see if we could implement the rest of the features from the original game", what the hell, so we don't get ALL of the features from the original game?

Typo: "Keep your head up!Your father is looking..." and "Don't you see I'm trying to concentrate!Go away..." needs a space after the exclamation mark to separate the sentences. It's a VERY common mistake in translations actually.
I wish you could move diagonally.
The quick menu between the dpad and action button should allow you to slide your finger along the boxes and show you an enlarged image of the icon. Otherwise your finger keeps blocking what you selected.
The ingame main menu that you use to level up, use items and such need to be navigated in similar fashion, instead of using the dpad. Swiping around and viewing enlarged image previews should be standard.
These menus also look very bland, like a holdover from old J2ME cell phone games. It's jarring switching between detailed drawing and animation of the game and the lameness of the menus. Definately need to be redone with pizazz.

Ok it is still in the process of translation so typos are not an issue yet. I too thought you should be able to move diagonally but it is surprisingly not a big deal and the 4 way controls actually work well. I will pass on your opinions about swipe controls for the menus which I too think should be and option but the use of the d-pad is faster when you get used to it and it works similarly to a regular mobile RPG because of it.
I will tell them about adding pizazz to the menu as well :)
Oh and the icon has been a hot topic among the testers too. Most think it should be changed and Regret definitely seems to be the best (and most spoken of) alternative.

Chill out a little bit. All a "closed beta" means is that the beta was provided to a select group of individuals rather than put on a web site somewhere for anyone to access. Since no one signed an NDA (that I'm aware of), we are technically not obligated to remain silent. Not to mention the fact that I went back and re-read all the emails I've received about the game, and I can't seem to find one where the developer says that we aren't allowed to answer questions about the game. That being said, I would hope the beta testers would use some discretion in how / what they answer, but so far it doesn't seem like anyone has revealed anything too earth-shattering.

I guess we'll just agree to disagree, then, because I see it the other way. If I wasn't told to keep quiet, I feel I have the right to talk about it. I don't really see that as being disrespectful either, but that's just me. as for price they havent said but me and everyone else in the beta LOVES it and it's definetely worth whatever they put it at even at the dreaded 9.99 (honesly I'd pay 15-20 for it) but yea idk about proces yet but its definetely worth it. lol especially if were all excited with a 70% done beta :P
Yup. [level up system]Also weapons upgrade. Three different types of charcters to pick from. I think there Warrior, Assasin, and Paladin? Im positive for warrior and paladin.
Pro's:
Excelletn graphics
Nice story
Somewhat easy learning curve
Nice controls
Addicting (lol)
Con's:
Crappy UI (its nice but there gonna fix it up. I keep trying to tap the UI but i forget u have to use the directional arrows.)
Player movement(sometimes he doesnt realize a breakable box is in front)
Player movement2(Just general movement)
Money (very tight)
Thats just a few off hand things. I mean it's beta still but so far its definetely comign along nice. Lets just say even if it was submitted as is it would still blow many apps outta the water. All the Cons I listed are getting worked on though :DPretty good. Is Gameevil planning to address problems raised in the beat before release or in a subsequent update?

OK, now that I few people have played the game for some hours, maybe somebody can finally answer me - does Zenonia have environmental puzzles for which Zelda, with which it is often compared, is famous for? I'd hardly call moving a lone box out of the way a puzzle and that's all that I have seen in the trailers so far...

So far, I have seen small but insignificant ones.

So Zenonia is more about leveling up, gaining skills, killing bosses instead of solving puzzles?

no, he's just rubbing it in your face that he's a beta tester. Typical teenage behavior, you're suprised that teenagers are beta testing this?
