Well, it seems like the best way to implement the UI. The great thing about the iPhone is that you can invent your own controller layout.
I would love to hear alternatives to virtual buttons in the context of this game :)

Great, I was pretty happy with the lite version and this looks even better.

How about making the buttons somewhat transparent. They look terrible the way they are, too bright and big, they take up too much of the screen when they are that bright. If you make them transparent, then it doesn't seem like as much of the screen is taken up. Other than that, I can't view the video because I am at work, but the screenshot looks like it's cool!

Not a bad idea really. I'll play around with in the next update.

A new lite version will be out alongside the full game bringing them equal in terms of features bug fixes.
And it would have been out right now, however I've been bitten by Apple's inconsistent review process. More info info here for those who are interested in these things: http://beautifulpixel.com/2009/3/14/app-store-yes-you-could-but-now-you-cant

That's too bad. I've been playing the lite version for a while and waiting for the full version. Still looking forward to it, and hopefully it comes out soon.

New Lite version 1.0.2 is now out!

I think the full version is right around the corner too.
On the buttons could you put symbols that tell the user what they do versus A,B, C ?
Thanks,
Rad
I just watched the video, Wow!
I hope the controls are easy to use, any tilt used for steering?
What will the launch price be?

Well that is explained on the instructions screen from the main menu and the weapons help screen. We tried a lit of different things, but this one seemed to be the easiest and most consistent given the assignment of weapon groups form the hyperspace UI. The old version had a gun blaster icon on it, but there was only one button.

Yep you got it. Horizontal tilt used for steering vertical tilt is unused. I find tilt sesitivity on both axes can be tough to control.
The full version should be out sometime tonight, price will will be $2.99 for the weekend. Then it goes up a bit.

Thanks guys!
Just completed the game. Absolutely loved it. In fact, this may be the first iDevice game I actually finished. Can't say enough good things about it.
Dev, are there any updates in the works to add more to the game? I'd hate for the fun to be over. :(

I agree. Believe it or not, I love buttons. I am not big in the tilt control type games for the most part. Mainly becuase I play at work and if people see me using my iphone as a steering wheel, they will think I am nuts :p
But making the buttons more transparent would be nice

I would suggest it, I've only made it a fraction of the way into the game, and it's a lot of fun. The controls work nice, the graphics are solid, and there are a bunch if unlicksbles, plus it appears to offer many hours of gameplay. If it looks like this kind of game appeals to you, at $2.99 (weekend sale), I don't think you can go wrong.

I like the controls a lot -- a lot of people complained about buttons, but I say what's wrong with them, if they're appropriate for the game.
That said, I don't feel great about having spent $5 on the game (it sounded like someone said it's on sale now). There isn't that much depth; you play through a lot of levels, but they're all fairly similar. The one change is that the enemies get a lot harder, a bit too hard for my taste given how long it takes to accumulate money to buy a new ship. I would love to see a game with controls like that but with the depth of Escape Velocity, this great shareware space series where, in addition to destroying ships, you complete missions, trade resources, etc.

Just got the game updated. :) It's quite addictive -- space looting. :D I like the music in the background.
Squeegy:
One thing bothers me after the update: the game tries to connect up to Feint to submit highscores after I clear a map everytime. It's a matter of pressing the "cancel" button but it's still an unnecessary distruption as I'm usually not connected to the web. Can we have an option to tell the game not to try to connect online at all?
And, is there anyway to access main menu during a game other than to exit it entirely and restart the game app?

Nice, I didn't realize there was an update coming :) you can exit a level by hitting pause and then "abandon ship"

I know how to exit a level. :) But how do you get to the main menu where all the "settings" and "start new game" are? I sometimes just want to get back to it, so I can access the settings to try a different sensitivity setting.
