I'd like to pull all the Car Jack Streets pre-release stuff into one thread to save chocking up the rest of the forum with various Car Jack threads. I'll now use this thread with all the latest news in the run up to release.

To get started we have revamped the Car Jack Streets game website. You can check it out here:

www.carjackstreets.com (http://www.carjackstreets.com)

We'll be doing all sorts of fun things over the coming weeks including promo code giveaways on our Twitter and Facebook pages, a 'warts and all' behind the scenes video diary on YouTube plus the usual release of screen shots and game-play movies. We also have a very special competition based upon in game performance of which there will be news very soon.

Cheers
Paul

PS check out the characters page on the Car Jack website to see the in-game incarnation of our "get in the game" competition winner Marto Tonev!

PPS the first preview screenshot is included on page 8

I'm dreading these waiting days!

Will there be a lot of people on the streets?

P.S. How' your wife doing? I saw in the Dev thread that she was due soon

Hey Hatteras good to hear from you and thanks for asking about the family. We are still waiting for #2 child to appear but it could be any day now... hopefully we will be celebrating the safe delivery of two babies this month - the human one and Car Jack!

There will be more people on the streets during the day than the night. We still have to finalise the balance - as you can image the more pedestrians the easier certain things are.... like the road kill felony achievement and the cult leader bonus. We do have a good number of pedestrian types so hopefully you'll approve - if not then we'd certainly welcome your thoughts for the planned updates!

Cheers

Hey Rich if you didn't get a reply then do assume that you didn't win. We'll have plenty more promo codes to give away in the coming weeks so please do try again!

As far as release goes then I can't really talk about that with any certainty because of the review process... I will say that in terms of content we have the ok so no worries on that account. We are aiming for a 31st March release (hence the cryptic Twitter post!) but again it depends on how this week goes and how smoothly we get through the review process.

I will say that although we have made rapid progress towards completion we are not going to ship until we are happy with the game - we have too much riding on this as our first major iPhone title!

Cheers

I checked out the website for more info. It looks good. But I did notice that there was not one female character...

Edit: Just to clarify I'm not criticising. I just happened to notice and was curious about this.

Hey again Paul

I just downloaded GTA 2, a real gem you got there. I am certain CJS can live up to it. Whoevers idea it was, it will be a good idea to have more people during the day. I hope there's a lot, too, like GTA 2

P.S. What's with with you and all of your clown killings you're talking about? You really don't like clowns...

P.P.S. My thoughts in future updates???? I'm flattered! ;O

There are no main women characters primarily because with missions being proceduarally created it caused all sorts of issues with the localisation text strings.

Hopefully for Car Jack 2 when we have a bigger budget and a bit more time we'll address this... as we all know some of the biggest criminal minds of our time have been women!

Paul, I listened to your iPGN interview yesterday (while tearing out a wall ironically, does CJS promote destruction?) and I have to say that even just HEARING the work you've put in there has exceeded my expectations. I have high hopes for CJS and know that this game won't disappoint!

Are you expecing to pick up GTA:CW when it comes out to see if you can borrow some stuff for CJS2? I have no doubt that CJS will turn a huge profit for TAG and hopefully kick off some more amazing projects.

FYI, for those wanting to check out the interview of Paul on iPGN, get it here: http://www.iphonegamenetwork.com/tags-paul-farley-talks-car-jack-streets

Hey Crimsonpaw - yes I'm very much looking forward to Chinatown Wars, its looks like its going to be an amazing game and I do hope that one day Tag gets the chance to make a game as ambitous and polished!

We've just uploaded the first of a number of developer diary videos to our YouTube site. This first one is just a fun intro to the team but future ones will have lots more behind the scenes material about the making of Car Jack on iPhone and iPhone development in general.

Hope you like it ;-)

I'm definitely going to be one of the first buyers, and I do hope that you get large amounts of money :) By the way, congrats on your two babies, your human one (has he/she been born yet?) and CJS!

Getting pretty excited about this game now but a bit concerned we haven't seen any screens or video of game-play yet. All I want is big explosions and lots of blood!

Kudos to the team at Tag though for all the effort going in on the game and also things like the webpage and developer videos. It's great to have developers coming on here and engaging with the iPhone games community.

Hope this game is a big hit for them so they can finish Astro Ranch!

Well, it's official, I suck at GTA2

I hope I'm good at CJS

EDIT: Will there be an indacator for which you can see if the cops are onto you? Also, can you hide somewhere for a little while so the cops will leave? In GTA2 (Did you help make it? I know you helped GTA1, I don't know how to get rid of the cops...)

2nd EDIT: Will there be more features in the iPhone CJS than the other mobile ones?

3rd EDIT (sorry!): Will it be a fully destructible world? Like knocking over fences and such. I found it almost ridiculous in Payback and GTA2 that you can't run over a fence, when in real life, this would obviously happen. And, can you walk into any building? I could see this not being a possibility because it would be a lot bigger.

Sambo110
03-17-2009, 07:49 AM
In real life hitting a fence could be really bad, it depends on the kind of fence. You wouldn't just go straight through it and it goes flying though. Anyway, I like how the graphics look and can't wait for this to get released.

So I'm wondering what people are thinking about GTA: Chinatown Wars? I haven't played it yet but by all accounts the reviews have been excellent bar a few issues with control and story.

We only have 60 open bugs left to clear in Car Jack (thats not many in case you are wondering!) but are having a few issues with some of the audio and connected functionality. We have SO many sound effects we're running out of memory so quite a bit of work still needed there to cram as much in as possible. Still we are looking good to get the game submitted to Apple very soon.

Watch this space.

PS we will be uploading a game-play video to the Tag YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/taggames) and www.carjackstreets.com (http://www.carjackstreets.com) along with a load of new screenshots so be sure to take a look!

QUOTE]

I picked up Chinatown Wars, and it is very good! I'm loving almost everthing about it, although it is a little hard to connect to the characters with the cutscenes they chose. apart from that, the world is huge, i love the graphics and controls and I'm very excited to see how CJS compares!:D

Paul@Tag
03-18-2009, 07:53 PM
Not much to live up to then! I do hope that Car Jack isnt touted as a GTA Chinatown Wars for iPhone - they simply can't compare in scale, production values or polish... at least in this iteration so please judge fairly against other similar games ;-)

We do promise that you are unlikely to find another $5 (or less) game that comes close to matching the longevity of CJS tho. Our beta testers are reporting that the longer they play the more they are enjoying the game so that's great!

Anyway the next video diary is up and its basically me talking about the origins of the game...

Ha! Beta testers are a very select bunch of individuals, possibly the highest form of human evolution known in this universe ;-) Basically they were the folks that got lucky a few months ago when we posted looking for folk to join the team. If you are interested PM me and tell me why you'd be great as a Beta tester and if we like you you'll get added for future games/updates.

Another thing we are doing is putting together a Car Jack Streets - "Street Team". If you'd like to be involved in that please drop me a PM- we have a limited number of spaces but I'd like to give our loyal TA readers first shout at that.

The fire truck won't be squirting water in the first build I'm afraid although its on the list for one of the updates. To be honest its really just (very nice) window dressing - you will be able to jack the fire truck tho!

The beauty of this is that we'll be able to listen to players most desired update features and incorporate them. Still for the $$$ I'm sure you wont be disappointed in the launch build!

Nope, Paul hasn't said anything except for in his intervew with iPGN where he said it would be "less than 5 pounds", not sure what the US conversion rate is, but at this point it doesn't matter to me.

How can there be that many issues to delay three days? I thought it was already filmed, all that needed done was editing...which could only take an hour or two at most. I want to see some gameplay...just post it with the bugs...

Screenshots at least!

There could be any number of causes for the delay...for example, the developer Paul and his wife are expecting their first child. Earlier in this thread he mentioned that the arrival of the new addition to their family was expected any day now :)

do you edit then? do you know how long it takes to do a nice cut, mix music effects etc and export with a nice code? i work as an editor and its not an extremely quick thing to do.

also a factor in the delay is probably the fact that its the weekend.

dont know - just guessing

Paul@Tag

Well its just a simple movie for YouTube so not really any complex editing either of visuals or audio... problem lies in a movie loaded into Final Cut on a Mac and then transfered onto Premier on PC. Without boring everyone its a case of missing codecs.

It looks like we've found a way round but not sure we'll have anything today... I can tell you the screenshots are looking rather tasty though and the game will be submitted to Apple next week.

Well CrimsonPaw there are those that would say that Paybacks inital brief appearance on the Australian app store before the bug was found was a stroke of marketing genius! It certainly fuelled the hype machine into overdrive and contributed to strong sales.

I expect that Car Jack will have a relatively smooth launch in comparision!

BTW there are some snippets of in-game artwork and some more background on the game on our developer video diaries. You can find the first two on the Tag Games YouTube Channel (http://www.youtube.com/taggames). I'm sporting a beard that I have vowed wont be shaved off until we submit the game to Apple - hopefully not long because its starting to itch!

In some future updates, I think it would be really cool if in CJS, when you car is on fire, you can burn people and other cars, really cool!

A GPS would also be really cool where you tap where you want to go and then it could give you directions

Haha im one of the special ones :) I've been testing CJS and I give a resounding Yes!!! :D

What i particularly love in the fact the game is time based meaning it continues as you go in real life: some of the best missions occur only at certain times in the day. Also, per week dues of 45k must be payed or else... bad things happen (Yeah, i failed by 6k...) THe missions are pretty challenging, which is nice. Love the GTA feel to it.

I just worked out that paying back $50,000 every week until you've cleared the $1m debt would take 20 weeks (about 5 months)! :D

I have a few of questions for Paul:
1. Does the $50k get deducted from your earnings at the end of each week?
2. When you've cleared the debt, is there a proper ending to the game's story like in the 3d GTA games? And can you continue playing after completing the story?
3. Do things like getting arrested or killed cost you cash like in GTA?
4. Can you bribe cops, buy businesses, set up protection rackets etc?
5. Is there a garage/safe house where you can store your fav wheels?
6. Any thoughts on what 3.0 might bring to Car Jack in the future i.e. car radio music from ipod (selectable within the game), real time mission reminders, online or local multiplayer, DLC add on packs (new cars, mission packs or maps)?

First of all really sorry CJS Street Team candidates - got that email address wrong twice. Arrrghh.. please email bizdev@tag-games.com if you want to be a member of the Street Team. Will be selecting folk next week.

Ok Nizy here's some answers to your very good questions... and yes if you want to beat the game its going to take you 5 months (however its designed to be played 10-15 mins a day rather than for hours so do bear that in mind!)

1/ Yes. You have to pay that $50k everyweek otherwise Frankie will send the boys round and it will be game over. Any extra cash you have carries through to the next week.

2/ There is a twist in the story at the end - thats all I'll say! Yes you can continue playing to get the biggest cash score possible and see how you're doing against the rest of the world on the global rankings tables. Of course in 5 months time CJS 2 might be close to release ;-)

3/ Yes.

4/ Not this time round. If we had twice the budget and double the team then this would have been in as it is you'll have to wait for the sequel on that front!

5/ No garage at the moment (planned for update but due to the nature of the design its not as important as in GTA) but there are safehouses.

6/ Well we are going to add alot of stuff in regular updates but for the sequel we'd expect to use much of the new 3.0 functionality especially around connectivity. Right now we are 100% focused on submitted CJS next week and making sure we make enough money from the game this time round so that there will be an even better CJS on the App Store come Christmas time!

Cheers
P

Ok... let me answer some of these questions!

1/ Buring cars - yes we have buring cars but as far as using them to burn other cars/people then I'm afraid we felt that was likely to be going too far as far as violence goes. We tried to keep the violence in the game cartoon and unrealistic - burning people causes a few issues especially in terms of the Apple review process. This couldnt be an 18 rated game.

2/ There isn't an explosion in that screenshot. The big green thing is a tree. It will make more sense visually when you see it moving. Trust me it looks big and 3D in game but doesn't translate fantasically to a static screenshot.

3/ The map is fairly large and has different areas (beaches, island, downtown, docks, suburbs, marina, race track etc) but these are all open at the start. You will be soon be finding your way around easily and when you play the game you will see that the structure of the game is such that having everything 'open' from the start makes sense. The game is far more of an arcade experience based around short bursts of frantic play than long narrative driven tasks... think R-Type meets GTA!

4/ Cops - The best way to deal with cops is to uh... "dispatch" them! You can go and hide if you want and wait for your wanted level to cool off but that takes a bit of time and is risky. Best to just confront the problem! As I said above the game is arcade in nature with lots of power-ups dotted all over the map. You'll soon learn where the disguise power-ups are that reduce your wanted level to zero!

5/ The game will have a helicopter but we might hold this back for an update. You'll see why later ;-)

6/ Love the tank with the flamethrower that looks like a great idea!

Cheers

Paul, thanks for answering my questions. And i've gotta say this game sounds awesome so far!

But i do have some concerns regarding the 50k/week comments you made:

1/ Yes. You have to pay that $50k everyweek otherwise Frankie will send the boys round and it will be game over. Any extra cash you have carries through to the next week.

1. How difficult will it be to earn the 50k each week? I mean is it possible to make the money from side missions alone? Or in a few hours playing standard story missions? You say that excess money will rollover, so feasibly could i earn a large safety net in 1 week of intensive play so as to survive even if i don't make the 50k in the next week?

2. You state that its game over if you don't make the 50k. Thats sound a bit lame. Would you get the chance to start the week over or do you have to start the whole game again? I mean I could imagine it being quite easily to miss a payment (i.e. forget to play) and ending up losing the game! That would really piss me off if i'd been playing for ages by then!!!!!!!

3. How does the save game system work with the real-time gameplay?

The video problem was we decided to shoot in HD rather than use the crappy camera we used before. No idea what happened really but first the codecs were all wrong and then vista wouldn't see the camera at all!!!

Where has he ever said there will be multiple control schemes? That would take so much extra work, and also be very difficult to implement, unless the player has an option to configure the on-screen controls, but this would just be an alteration of the original. Where has he ever said there will be multiple control schemes? That would take so much extra work, and also be very difficult to implement, unless the player has an option to configure the on-screen controls, but this would just be an alteration of the original.
Unless something has changed, I have a PM saying that they're implementing three different control schemes and multiple camera angles. We'll see when it comes out though.

I agree. I am pretty excited for the game but the trailer didn't blow me away. I am not a huge fan of Payback because there is very little story and very little character to the protagonist. It looks like CJS will be better in both areas. The fact that there are cut scenes is already a huge improvement over Payback. I will still most likely buy this when it comes out, but I hope I am not disappointed like I was with Payback.

I would disagree there. I played all the way through Payback and it seemed just "meh" to me because the missions didn't seem varied in any way. This at least has different things to do other than going to a payphone to get the next mission. Plus Payback was broken into the multiple cities which didn't seem to work well, for me anyway.

I think CJS will offer more of the "GTA" type gameplay that I'm personally looking for.

emb531
03-24-2009, 05:16 PM
Wow, I'm surprised at the disappointment by some, especially Candy as you like just about every game :p, I just don't see how anyone can say Payback looks better than CJS....I mean Payback's graphics look like something from the late 90's...while CJS is deliberately being retro and "comic book" inspired, much more emphasis on overall presentation. Payback, in my opinion, is just horrible...there is no connection with the main character or anything that happens in the game.

Any word on submission date Paul?

Paul@Tag
03-24-2009, 05:18 PM
Well glad that we finally got that movie up at last - and still no sign of baby #2 but I get the feeling it will be here soon. Just want to mention a few things:

Control - CJS is more like the original GTA in terms of control and camera. We tried motion sensing for steering but it didn't work. There will be two touch controls - analogue and digital both using the virtual d-pad.

Camera - the camera is fixed from above but does zoom. I'm sure you recall our decision process a couple of months back when we looked at a Payback style camera and 3D cars. Given our current battle with framerate I think we made the right choice. Don't get me wrong the iPhone is a capable device but it is still a mobile phone and doesn't have some of the 3D capability of even a DS. Reality is that you aren't going to get a 30fps 3d person GTA on this generation of iPhone...(unless Carmack proves me wrong!) I have severe doubts you'd get a Chinatown Wars style engine running at more than 10-12 fps on iPhone. Payback really struggled with framerate and it does affect game-play big time.

Visuals - this is very subjective for sure and I hope that more people like the style we have gone for than don't!

Expectations - We aren't calling this the best game in the world. We know that it has it failings and the teams only desire is that the game is judged on merit once players have spent some time with it... so much of the game opens up over a period of days so I hope players don't hate on it after playing for five minutes! Although we appreciate the hype we have seen a large number of iPhone games built up unrealistically and then fail to deliever. I dont think this is often the fault of the developer... remember people these are games that sell for around half the price of a Java or Brew mobile phone game and around the price of a pint of beer!

We'll have another developer diary on our YouTube channel in a couple of days looking at the art style and development so you'll get to see alot more then...

Cheers

From what I've seen I prefer the visual style to Payback, it's a personal taste issue really but the CJS look really do remind me of the GTA that got released on the GBA many years back which, although poor due to the systems limitations, was a valiant attempt.

That is complete bull.

The iPhone can clearly handle a real 3D environment, as somebody said Quake 3 can already run fullspeed (I have it), there is Hero of Sparta, Ex Zeus, Cube, BIA to name a few.

It's all about optimization techniques and porting, clearly games like Katamari was not optimized properly when it first came out because of the nature of direct ports. We already know games made from scratch with the iPhone in mind can have fast, detailed 3D graphics.

The reason why Payback suffers from framerate problems is problems with direct porting from the GP2X engine, which used software rendering. Payback for the iPhone does not seem to take advantage of the openGL ES frameworks on the iPhone at all.

We already know the iPhone has greater graphical capability than DS as well, so that statement is very misinformed.

All that being said, I am looking forward to CJS, as the game's graphical style seems modern and fresh, sprites look clean and gameplay seems fast. Payback, while being a great technological achievement on the GBA and GP2X, seems dated now.

I just wish the developer for CJS justifies the graphics based on style merits, rather than just blaming the lack of a full 3D GTA style game on the iPhone's capabilities. Not all users on TouchArcade are that shallow, we can appreciate a game's art-style if it is good, and CJS seems to have it.

have you played the iphone version?

I have played payback, and I really like it with the improved camera angle. To each his own. I am REALLY looking forward to CJS though.

By the way, the iPod 2 Gen is more powerful than most people realize....when the next iPhone and iPod come out...they will have even a little more boost. However, games need to be built from the ground up to run well in a 3D environment. You can't just use a hacked together version from another platform and expect it to run the same.

Think about it this way...many games that are made for the PC but are originally Playstation or X-Box games don't run well. Is it because my bleeding edge computer doesn't have the power???? No! It is because the programming is not optimized for a PC, so it has to work harder to get less impressive results than on the original platform.

Just the facts.

Things are coming along well and submission is now only days away. Looks like we will miss the 31st unfortunately unless there is some miracle in the review process!

Apologies for the previous post about technical capabilities I am not technical in anyway shape or form, however based on what I do understand I still feel we will not see a full GTA third person 3D game on this generation of iPhone. It's not just about 3D performance but the level of processing needed for the AI and everything else as well. I guess we will see ;-)

Interesting to see that the CJS movie trailer is the #66 most watched YouTube video in the UK today and even higher in Russia!!!

This sounds cool, heres an exerpt from the interview...

Car Jack Streets was previously a Java game for regular mobile phones. There have been a few games by major publishers that have turned out to be “lazy ports”. What improvements can gamers expect in the iPhone version?

The great aspect of building from the Java version initially is that we are starting with a game that is already a successful award winner on an existing mobile platform, albeit one with significant technical limitations! The iPhone version of Car Jack Streets is certainly far more than a port! Visually the whole game has undergone a makeover with the addition of 3D buildings and objects, weapons effects, day and night lighting, headlights and brake lights and much more. Another huge improvement has been made with the audio. We have over 80 minutes of really superb music across a wide variety of genres plus a wide range of sound effects that help to build a sense that the city is real and living. There’s also a number of new vehicles and weapons, psycho bonuses where you just have to go crazy for 30 seconds , achievements (or Felonies in this case), global earnings tables to see how you stack up against other players and much more!

I think Paul said something about possibly end of March so I'm still hoping for that :)

It comes out November.

Where did you get that...

I think it's more likely that it'll come out in early April, but come on, that's not a long time, and this game is certainly worth waiting for! And to the guy saying it's coming out in November...-_-

Its not just that guy, there was some other dude who said that too. It's because they watched the trailer for the mobile version which said "Coming in November 2008." If he could actually read things all the way through instead of part of it, then he would see that he was pretty stupid.

Hey folks - hang in there we are getting there with CJS... in the final straight towards the finishing line!

Hopefully will be live very soon - in the meantime looks like the Street Teams bitching will keep everyone entertained ;-)

Live date and pricing will be revealed very soon.

Thanks

Did I not just see you on the forum for some conga game saying how great it was?

Just because I disagreed with you, doesn't mean you need to come and insult me on every post I make.

Either of the three are good choices

It's a good thing the iphone and ipod touch come standard with a "clock" app

Just set the "world clock" up, and it easily tells you what time it is anywhere.

congradulations on the new child and wishing your family all the best.
dont let other people make you feel like you have to rush anything.
family comes first and you should be very happy, if not amazingly tired ^^

congrats again,
keep well.

looking forward to updates.

Congrats on the baby :)

So you are planning to specify a release date once it has been approved? As in prolong the release even further after approval? That is kind of lame...just let it release once it has been accepted...

Congrats my man, it's amazing the hardships we will endure for our children. When my 2nd was born, there were countless nights of 2 hour "naps" but we got through it.

Glad to hear the release is coming soon though, you guys deserve a break (and my $$$).

And of course nice job with the game getting submitted before the end of March

Just to clarify - we cant just release whenever it clears because we have to co-ordinate marketing material and hopefully some promotion from Apple on the App Store.

We are as keen to get this out as you are to play it so please bear with us - it wont be long!
