You control the FPS by touching anywhere on the left side of the screen, then shoot with your right thumb.
sounds (exactly) like iDracula's controls

I think that the pay for weapons is gay. If devs want extra money, why not give us map packs or extra levels dlc instead of making us pay extra for things that should have been in a game since release. With this new game, if it has online multiplayer it can become a huge hit and things like a golden weapon or map packs would sell good, maybe an expansion to the campaign?
I think the dollar for the rocket launcher is just a proof of concept.
Ngmoco typically puts their games to plenty of user testing. So I'm pretty sure those test users won't like this pricing idea either...

You know what the beauty of the DLC is? It'll work. It will work like a charm. Your average consumer will be sucked in by the low sale price going; "Wow, this polished game only for a dollar?!". The consumer will then buy the game, starts playing and a little while later a little alert will pop up asking if the person wants to buy something. And she/he will buy it. Just because they want it, and it's painless. No pain at all, you don't even have to leave the app. It's just one little click. The one reason iTunes is so popular is because it's so easy to use.

"But some devs have come to us and talked about other models they'd like to use. Like subscriptions. A place where you could renew that sub in the app. Some game devs have wanted to be able to sell new levels from within an app. There are many examples of that, like e-books. Like a bookstore built into an app. We supporting these new models in what we call In-App Purchase."Showing off a dialog -- a prompt to purchase an update to mag from within an app. Now a game. "You can purchase a game with 10 levels, then you can tap to update with another 10 levels within the game." Yes, with a nice, intrusive pop up!

Noooooooooooooooooo multiplayer over 3g and wi-fi no edge : (. I have an iPhone 2g and I hardly ever have Wi-fi. I'm sure the price of this game could be $30 and people would still buy it cuz its an FPS multiplayer! No edge don't know if i'll even get it then

I don't think anyone should go jumping off any cliffs over this in-game charging for items quite yet. It could be that, just like EA has done via services like Xbox Live, the user can earn the items in game, or pay money to have them right now. Say you don't want to wait until level 10 to get a rocket launcher... then you'd have the option to pay a buck to have it from level 1 on.
I just think it's better to see it in practice first before we start blacklisting dev houses.
I'm sure there will be devs who use it the wrong way, and they will pay the price for it by having users explode on them.
I'm not sayin'... I'm just sayin'.
Thanks to that twitter that calmed my nerves, I will be watching this very closely.

Hey, my name's Tim, I work on LiveFire & wanted to reassure you all that buying weapons is not the point of this game, it was just a tech demo to show what is possible with the new stuff in iPhone OS 3.0 (which we are very excited about!)
Besides maps (obviously a good idea) what do you all think would be a cool thing to buy in-game, that would not screw up the game balance?

I'm not much of an FPS player myself, but it looks like a really cool game. I don't see what all the fuss about DLC is...obviously, if the game becomes too imbalanced, it would only hurt ng:moco.
As for balanced content, I don't know; like I said, I'm no FPS fan, mostly since I've never bothered to try one. ;P But...unlockable (balanced!) classes (if there will be classes here...), or different play styles, or maybe new modes with different goals than just kill-the-other-players, though you'd have to be careful about that. Or maybe a dollar gets you 100 "points" to spend freely on different things, and some basic things (early weapon upgrades, graphics tweaks, random mods, whatever) cost a relatively minor number of points (5, 10, whatever). It wouldn't net you a lot of income unless gamers really buy into it, but people would complain less. ;)
Just some random thoughts from someone with no authority whatsoever. :D

Stuff that does not affect player strength.
If I'm playing that game, and the guy I'm up against has a rocket launcher, while I have a puny plasma gun, I'm obviously going to lose. While I'm willing to pay maybe $5 for add-ons, I don't want to constantly have to buy new weapons just to win at the game. Take a look at MapleStory. They have their shop pretty much down to pat.

New maps, control set maybe, I agree with kazamar it shouldn't affect the players strength directly.

So I'm assuming you are going to make a full game and the DLC will be extra correct??

Welcome to TouchArcade!
As already posted, please do NOT allow one player to "buy" his way to success. It's happened in online games like iMob, iMafia and Agency Wars already. Some noob pays real cash for a super weapon and kills all with one shot. Hardly a challenge and disheartening for those who worked hard to get good stats.
Maps are good examples of what you can pay for. Say the basic game has 8 levels, but you can buy 5 more levels for a dollar or two. So those who can't process payment (parents locked the account) aren't penalized, but those playing can try something new.
Alternative game modes might be another option, but see what others think too. Eg. If Deathmatch, team DM and Capture the Flag are in standard, maybe set Last Man Standing as paid option. Ensure that game modes like Assault are not paid options, as you need alot of players to ensure it's success and not everyone will buy in.
Lastly, maybe a collection of outlandish costumes just for fun. It changes the appearance but not gameplay superiority.
Overall, paid supplements should allow expansion of gameplay in breadth and depth, not enhancement where someone has an unfair advantage over others.

The game looks like great fun, visually awesome too.
As others have said please don't allow money to ruin the balance of combat, buying new characters, maps and maybe visual effects for weapons is great but mostly anything which adjusts player's attack power of movement speed end's up making the game no fun for people who only want to play without buying DLC.

While I don't think ngmoco is dumb enough to implement cash for guns, the fact that the majority of people who will see that 3.0 preview will not know any better and immediately pass this title up is their mistake. They really should have chosen a much more intelligent method for proof of concept...like a map pack.
looks good, but is it practical to play such games on the iPhone?

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all the thoughts and feedback - rest assured we're not going to do anything to unbalance the game - that, along with the quality of control, ensuring that we have a lag free experience with a high framerate are the most important things for us in terms of making a great multiplayer experience.
Check out Chris Plummer's post @ http://gamemakers.ngmoco.com for some more thoughts on LiveFire, TouchPets & SDK 3.0

From the post Neil gave us the link to. Sounds like they were just demoing the in-app purchase thing:
The other feature we showed is In-app Commerce. This feature allows users to purchase content packs and other product extensions from inside an installed app instead of having to buy a separate app whenever a game is modified or extended in a significant way. We showed how In-app Commerce might be used to buy an expansion pack in Touch Pets Dogs or to purchase individual items (a rocket launcher in our example) in LiveFire.
With In-app Commerce, it’s important to point out that although it will be possible to purchase content and/or features directly within a game, ngmoco will always give the highest priority to game balance and the integrity of the core experiences of our games. We won’t use In-app Commerce in ways that break our games, but we do think there are a lot of interesting ways to use the feature to enhance our games over time. In this post I’ll shine a light onto some of the ideas we’re exploring internally. We want to consider external as well as internal feedback as we refine our thinking.
Thank you all for your insightful feedback! We aren't ready to reveal too much about this game yet, but we do want to keep our players' passions in mind while designing the commerce/expansion system made possible by the new iPhone OS.

I would rather have the DLC to be either maps, gamemodes, or credits, BUT, we should still be able to get maps and gamemodes with earned credits. Those of us who bought the game can still get everything without paying, but it just takes a little longer, but those who do not want to wait, can just buy the map or gamemode.

I can definitely understand paying for additional level packs.
I have one question about the push notifications. I don't want to be receiving a notification about a game starting in the middle of a class. Would there be a way to set up a schedule of when to receive a notification? That would be a really cool setting.

...isn't there already an option to turn off Push? (It's a global option now, since not many things use it.)
Settings >> Fetch New Data >> Push or Fetch (choose one) >> Advanced (set Push/Fetch prefs for individual mail accounts as of now)
So under "Advanced," maybe you'd be able to choose it for each app.

Im not sure if this has been mentioned, but if your going to allow players to purchase items that you would otherwise have to play for/be skilled to earn, then the items should reflect that fact, such as be a different color.
I could see some advantages and disadvantages. Some might not want to run around with a pink rocket launcher, and be less likely to purchase items, so the devs might not go for this idea.

Well, perhaps better would be to have your attire slightly changed to reflect in game achievements, as the other players see your character fully animated. Somewhat tantamount to medals of honor/achievement. Players without much experience, but with purchased upgrades would then be recognized as such, you would then know how skilled the person you are playing with/against is.
There may be certain things that you can’t buy, such as strength, longevity, shields, etc, and can only acquire thru experience that may offer appropriate competitive advantage….

The game looks like it has some potential, but I'd have to see how the controls handled since the first-person shooters have yet to really take off on the iPhone.
As for the In-App Purchases... per weapon will never fly. I could see if it was purchasing multiple weapons as an expansion back... but as a one unit purchase I would imagine that most would just give up on the game.
We'll just have to wait and see what comes of it, but I strongly hope they don't try to pull that.
Pay for things like...
Custom Character Models
Levels Packs
Expansion Weapons Pack (numerous weapons not just one)

This micro transactions concept is an interesting one and it will be interesting to see how successful it is in Europe/US. It is massively successful in Asia where the concept of buying success is widespread. There are lots of games where users pay for power-up & magic swords etc etc.
It seems that in the west there is more of a feeling that you should succeed through learning to play the game and being good, rather than how much money you have. As I say, be interesting to see how well this model works. Got to say I probably wouldn't play a game where someone with more money than me had an advantage.

Actually in any MMO those who have the money to setup a multibox and control multiple characters at once would have an advantage. So I guess you don't like MMOs.

I just watched the gameplay video and I love what I see, I just hope the game plays well, I can imagne some tricky shots when you release and press the screen to shoot in a straight line. Also the speed of the game looks good, not overdone or fast like quake 3 which might be too fast for iPhone controls to be any fun. This feels more like halo.

Actually purchasing weapons has different connotation rather than paying for the control of more characters. I'm not a multiboxer, but from what I understand it takes skill and practice to become even a medicore multiboxer and be on the same level as regular teams, let alone better than them.
Lets say I pay for a superior sniper or something I can instantly have a direct advantage over anyone with say, the normal sniper. Paying for more characters does not directly or instantly give you an advantage, as it actually takes a level of skill to properly multibox.

New characters, maps, and game modes :D
Everything a FPS DLC needs bro...

Also, (sorry for ANOTHER reply) another thing that caught my attention was that the controls for this game are great, but if they used the control scheme to the already out FPS Hill Billy (tilt to walk + look/tap to shoot), it would also be great.
The controls in Hill Billy are flawless. And that along with the shake-to-jump thing would be awesome. But then again, the sliding of fingers to look give players the benefit of like playing while laying down.
Its debatable. I just hopes its as easy as it looks.

Everyone is complaining about paying for weapons, but I thought I remember hearing that they only did that to give another example of the sdk. Ngmoco has been really great at PR and customer relations, so I doubt they would do something that dumb. I am sure they will use it, but probably for level packs. I think it will be like how rolando gets those secret levels, but where customers pay .99 for 35 secret levels or so. Ngmoco is really smart, and wouldn't upset their fan base like that.

It's only a demo of the in game 3.0 purchase. They aren't going to let you "buy" your victory. They just wanted to showcase some of the new 3.0 feature.
That's all Folks!

Ok, FOR THE LAST TIME:
The "buy weapons" feature is not really in the game. You dont have to pay a dollar for a rocket launcher. It was just used for demo purposes in the SDK demonstration.

Cheapos are you kidding me? The first quality first person shooter with deathmatch costing $10 is called cheap? Wow you are THE cheapest person I've ever met.
Do you even own Rolando? Developing that game probably took MONTHS with all the creativity going on in the game. The game uses every single multitouch gesture you can think of on the iPhone. Swipe, tap, tilt, pinch to zoom, everything! $10 for that verse $10 for a meal at Pick Up Stix. Hmmm...I wonder what I should choose.

+1... people need to wake up and realize that $10 is not a lot to ask for a quality game.
EDIT: Also, although the first online deathmatch games are all priced at a dollar, they aren't as high quality as Livefire will be.

Ummm... you make no sense whatsoever. There's a lot of people waiting for Star Defense, Rolando 2, and I guess Touch Pets. Rolando 2 is coming out in the summer around the same time as LiveFire and Star Defense is coming out this month because it doesn't use any of 3.0's features.

Just because you don't like some genres or style of games, doesn't make them stupid, crap or not worth making. Rolando in my opinion is one of the best games so far for iPhone (and very successful for ngmoco) and fully deserves a sequel. Tower defense games are very popular on the app store so Star Defense makes sense. And as for Touch pets, its also gonna find a market in the casual crowd. Different games for different people, they can't just make FPS's all the time (they are not ID software).
Anyway, I hope they spend the months leading up to the 3.0 release optimizing the game, tweaking the controls, framerate, graphics and online capabilities. I got Caster yesterday and the controls in that work very well and are pretty similar to the vids of LiveFire.

It also uses some of the connectivity features of 3.0 (and probably other stuff they haven't shown off yet) such as the push notifications, so I guess it will not launch until 3.0 does. Besides, I'd rather they spend the remaining time making sure the game is great! :D

I'm not saying that Rolando 2 and Star Defense are bad game ideas or not worth making or anything.
As a matter of fact, I think its great that they're making games of all genres. The more people that play the better, its for everyone. But what I AM trying to say is, MOST people are waiting for LiveFire out of all of them, and the fact that they post ALOT more about the other games (Rolando 2, Star Defense, Touch Pets) is what pisses me off. Rolando 2 isn't even made by ngmoco, only published. To generate hype, I think Hand Circus wants to do it this way and reveal the characters. Plus, there's so much information needed to be released about Rolando 2.
LiveFire... what more info do you need? What type of weapons? Seriously, do you think ngmoco would update people on the type of weapons like they do with Rolando? They've already given out all we need to know. It's an FPS that uses iPhone's 3.0 capabilities period. There's nothing else besides weapons and maps that is needed. You have a video on the gameplay of LiveFire, yet we don't even know how Rolando 2 is going to work (although I'm assuming it's going to be just like number 1) but yeah, no gameplay video on Rolando but there is for LiveFire.

My guess is that this (and maybe Sims 3) will be a launch game for 3.0 as Apple will want some cool apps and games to show off their new OS. They are most likely working closely with some "favoured" devs to get some quality titles available at launch.
I would assume Apple will show off 3.0 alongside the rumoured new iPhone at WWDC in June. It'll most likely then be a July launch.

Yeah I think there has to be something offline, even just deathmatches against bots...so we can practise and hone our skills! :D
As for the armor purchasing, it could work providing ngmoco carefully tunes the mechanics of each item relative to the base model giving you a noticeable, but not over the top improvement and a sacrifice elsewhere, as they describe. Also, at the same time they need to rank up and improve player stats to ensure you play better players due to the upgrade - it would be unfair to play at the same level with the additiional benefit, but better players should be able to cope...

Yeah I think there has to be something offline, even just deathmatches against bots...so we can practise and hone our skills!
For me, it doesn't have to have offline play. You can always practice online. I'd rather have Ngmoco spend their time making a GREAT multiplayer!

Nothin much. I asked the guy from Twitter these questions
Question: "Any new news on LiveFire? Thx!" (Something like that lol)
Answer: "No news other than it's looking good and we're targeting release around the launch of OS 3.0"
Question: "Any exact expected release on LiveFire? And is it just online multiplayer, or is there a campaign? Price details? Jus' curious! Thx!"
Answer: "We're not stating a release date yet, Online hosted multiplayer against anon + friends, no pricing details yet"
It's a bit helpful lol.. So we should be seeing this early/mid June..e :) Can't wait for this and The Sims 3!! :)
Where did you get early/mid June from that chat? With WWDC not until June 10-14, new hardware and possibly a close to final OS 3.0 expected to be showcased then and a release for the new hardware being rumored around July 17, 2009 I fully expect to see the OS 3.0 debut during that time, around July 17.
Sims 3 is going to debut next week (June 2 I think) on the iPhone and then will be upgraded when OS 3.0 comes out.
http://venturebeat.com/2009/05/27/ea-pulls-out-the-stops-for-launch-of-sims-3-iphone-game/
So mid July would be my guess for new hardware and OS 3.0 final debut.
LiveFire does look good though.

WOW, ngmoco must be doing something right...they have guys like you wanting to pay to beta test their game!
I would much rather they get this right 1st time. Its a online multiplayer only game (no single player) so if they mess that up, the game will completely suck. It has so much potential that they should get it right without requiring fixes in updates!

Well, when they demoed the game they said it would have voice chat. It's also an API that the iPhone 3.0 has for developers to use. I'm pretty confident it'll be in there!

That is possibly the most stupid post i've read on these forums.
1) They never announced a release date, only shortly after 3.0. "Shortly" could mean any period of time.
2) The only EA iPhone game that saw significant delays (that i remember anyway) was NFS. And that was only a few months.
3) The only ngmoco game that I remember being delayed was Rolando 2 and that was only by 1 day!
4) How could you want a game years before it had been announced, or the sdk even written and released?
5) You're stupid if you want them to release a buggy, half finished game. Thats like you wanting to pay them so that you can beta test their game! There are plenty of crap fps on the app store, why don't you go and try them? ;)
The thing is, if they did release it, and it was buggy, online play was lagging, controls sloppy etc. i bet you'd complain - 1 of the many stating its not worth the "premium" price and ngmoco sucks etc. With a game that focuses on online multiplayer, lots of testing and refinement will be required (especially for 3g networks) to achieve a decent quality of gameplay, otherwise it'll completely suck donkey balls.

But because of the lack of anything new; no videos, screenshots, info - people seem to be doubting whether it will ever hit the AppStore.

Patience, Patience.
They won't call it 'FPS', lol. They are probably just creating lot's of hype by changing it's name/not giving it a name.
If they hadn't changed it's name, it wouldn't have as many articles about it in sites such as pocket gamer. And therefore, less people (potential customers) would have heard about it.
It's like Freeverse's 'Warpack Grunts' but the other way around - they are giving gameplay but not a name.

Since playing Baseball Slugger i have realised just how well a multiplayer game can work on this platform.

I have no idea what it is called, they just kept calling it "Our FPS" in the latest video. I really don't think they have any idea what to name it. It can be tough to think of names for things sometimes, even for a big company.

They should do a naming contest, with prizes and stuff for the best votes. They could give a copy of the game out for free to the winner, maybe with a custom character skin or something like that. Anything to drum up publicity for the game... it has been a long time since they've posted any real information.

Haven't seen any games from ngmoco that are poorly made. In fact, they all seem to have a huge amount of polish. I don't like the gameplay in all of them, but I can respect that they're well made, which is more than I can say for 99% of the rest of the crap on the store.
I don't know how many games I've seen rushed out with broken interfaces or ugly screen filtering. Some don't even respect the silent switch on the device.
There has been another trend lately of releasing games that don't have any content, like Minigore. Rather than including levels, they promise to deliver after they get your money.
I haven't seen ngmoco do any of those things before...

As long as the in-app purchases aren't something necessary to the game, like weapons and such, I don't mind them pricing the game between 5 and 10 dollars.
In the past, ngmoco has been good with delivering a lot of content on their major games. I'd be surprised if they blow it here, but you never know.

it was my opinion on a price for this game which look really cool. I loved the 1st unreal multiplayer game.
...Plus some advertising ;) If that is what you mean with self-plug (I do not know this phrase).

There should be a progress bar on their website to tell us how far they are with developing!
And to the price: I just hope they don't make it more than 4$ with in-app purchase!
I read an article stating the in app purchases will be used for the armor of your character. It was something like that. But im almost positive you won't have to buy a rocket launcher. And expect this to be a premnium $9.99 title. Trust me, it will be. Based on all the graphics, controls, and gameplay, it won't be less then 10 bucks.

But still.....by now?? I first saw the tech demo clip back around january and THAT looked polished...that was around 6 months ago.
It wasn't Jan., it was March. That was one small map and a couple of characters to give a taste of the game. It's not like they had the 10 weapons and several pretty decent sized maps like now.
Trust me, when it's out, you'll be happy it took a while. And just be patient dude, be patient. I know how you feel. I'm waiting for this and Gangstar as well.
This feels like I'm waiting for Need For Speed all over again.
Btw, did anyone try iFPS online? That was terrible! The controls were okay after a while, but the maps were tiny, no one was EVER online, it was very laggy, and there was 2 weapons! Waste of $4 lol..
