As a huge fan of the indie PC hit Audiosurf (http://www.audio-surf.com/), I'm glad to share the news that Dylan Fitterer (developer) is looking into porting the game to the iPhone/iPod touch. Audiosurf is a game that lets you RIDE your songs, and with the new library support in OS 3.0, it's finally doable. Woot!
Directly from theappera.com:
“Dylan Fitterer Regarding An Audiosurf for iPhone: I’M ON IT!!!”
We remember seeing somewhere in the past that Dylan Fitterer, Audiosurf Developer, was asked wether he sees an iPhone version of the very popular Audiosurf game in our future. All he said was something along the lines of: “it will take Apple to possiby open the iPod library access” before he can start working on iPhone version.
Well with today’s keynote/preview for the new iPhone OS 3.0, one of the new features announced was: THE OPENING OF IPOD LIBRARY to be accessible by other applications! After the announcement, there was no question, we scrambled to email and contact Dylan with this exciting news!
We sent Dylan this message a couple of hours ago:
Hey Dylan,
We hope you saw the Apple announcement regarding iPhone OS 3.0, and how they’re opening the iPod library to be accessible from applications. This means that there is no way Audiosurf cannot work with the iPhone anymore.
I know the beta build of iPhone OS 3.0 is already available for download for developers enrolled in iPhone Developer Program.
Well anyway, think about it. We’re just excited that Audiosurf may finally come to the iPhone! Thanks!
To which he directly replied:
WooHoo!
I’m on it.
For those not in the know, Audiosurf is an award winning game where “its track-like stages visually mimic the music the player chooses, while the player races across several lanes collecting colored blocks that appear in sync with the music.”

AudioSurf is awesome...think it's like $10 on steam. Yes, this would be awesome. Difference between tap tap and ddr and audiosurf is that audiosurf creates the levels in realtime based on beat of the music. Actually it probably parses it first quickly the song then generates the level then starts the game.

I got it on the Steam holiday sale for two dollars, I think. Am I still playing it today? Nah. Scrolling through my iTunes library (which, mind you, was all encoded in those stupid nonsense titles...I no longer have most of my original music files) was just too annoying. If it came to the iPhone/iPod Touch, though...
Yeah, I'll be watching for it. :D It's a good game, and perhaps better suited to mobile gaming than to a PC.

This. Why listen to my songs if I can surf them, right? Mobile is the way to go, I'm sure Dylan knows.
Oh man. Been waiting on this for a while. Can't wait!

Hopefully it doesn't lag badly like tap tap does. Rhythm games and twitch games should have no lag otherwise you just can't improve your game. You get any lag on a high BPM trance/techno/hardcore song while playing Ninja Elite? GFG

If Audiosurf could be made, then would it be possible for a hypothetical Tap Tap 2 update or Tap Tap 3 to also be able to make use of our music libraries?

This is great news, I'm a huge fan and posted in the audiosurf forum at the time of the 3g/app store release and also emailed Dylan to ask if he was going to port it. He said he was looking into it at the time. I'm sure he knows how much money he could make from this if done right so I'm sure it'll be released. Can't wait.

This. Game should be running perfectly smooth, like on the PC (of course he will tone down visuals, etc.) Tap Tap Revenge is a laggy app.

I wish Audiosurf had a mode where every note was good to hit. It's weird passing on notes that go with the music. Only sometimes does the game feel epic when you get a string of notes that goes with the song.

I agree! It sometimes fails to make me feel the song when I'm trying to miss grey blocks, instead of a relaxing pure musical-rhythmical experience.

My only concern is exactly how much "iPod Library Access" is Apple allowing? From what I understand, Audiosurf needs to scan through the song before it generates the stage.
Will Apple allow them to actually find the file and analyze it for this purpose, or is library access merely the ability to play music and playlists? If it were the latter, could a workaround be performed?
I wouldn't get too excited about Audiosurf just yet. Wait until the developer has an official announcement one way or the other.

It's dead. At least for now as SDK doesn't allow an app to analyze music on your OWN ipod. Freakin lame in my opinion. Must be some RIAA conspiracy theory if you ask me.
See Music Catch thread (http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=13466) for more info.

While this is true, 3.0 will allow you to do this. Which means they could do the game.
When the 3.0 SDK releases I think we'll have a pretty good chance at seeing an Audiosurf port. The creator has already expressed interest.

No I'm specifically talking about 3.0 at least the dev of Music Catch is. I hope he is mistaken but I sincerely doubt that is the case. Read his post in the thread that I linked.
It was announced that 3.0 will allow devs use of the iPod via SDK. I've yet to see apple backpeddle from that, did that dev link anything along those lines?

iPhone OS 3.0 is not support directly access(read) music file in music library. see 'Media Player Framework Reference' in 3.0 SDK.
only support playing music and getting music info.
To generate rhythm from music... app must directly access(read) music file.
I think... AudioSurfer can't implement in iPhone OS 3.0.

That or have something where it's already pre-programmed for certain tracks or albums but I agree it's really dumb and it shouldn't force devs to do this because we all know most devs won't do it.
Why in the world won't they allow that?!
Isn't it obvious? Music games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero make the music labels extra money by getting users to buy tracks - how will they make money if you already own the song and use that copy instead? :(

It's Beatrider Touch (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=316530545&mt=8) $5 which you upload your mp3's and it generates beats based on them.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the developer of audiosurf was joking when he said he was bringing an iPhone port out. 2 things, firstly, it's based on a graphics engine that only works on windows, and he's not going to make a new engine just to release it on iPhone, he has said such on the audiosurf forum. Secondly, it comes with the new Zune HD, I think he made a deal with microsoft. Sorry, I too would love to see this game on iPhone, but it's not likely to happen at all.

Stop talking sh** you don't know. When 3.0 came out it was supposed to allow access to the user's music library, and he said he would look at it. But Apple dosen't allow the kind of access Audiosurf needs.
Firstly, engine my butt. it can be ported using a new engine. But he can't have the app reading the user's library, so Audiosurf isn't possible ATM.
Secondly, it does not come with the new Zune HD. You have to download it. STFU, really. It's Apple's fault it's not on iPhone. The dev has said he wants to port it, but without music, Audiosurf can't work.

tell me to stfu all you like dude, no need to take your anger out on me. i said what i said because i emailed the developer in june about the iPhone changes, and he told me he wasn't going to make a port. get over yourself, and maybe listen to others? also, to address your comments: yes it "could" be ported using a different engine, but he has already stated that he doesn't want to, so i'll make this bit clear for you. IT'S. A. NO.
no reason to be mad at me, it wasn't my decision. go read the audiosurf forums yourself, people have been begging for this to come out on every console since it's release, and it's just not happening.
also, grow up kiddie, no need for the language you've been using, if you want people to be civil with you, then be civil yourself.

What does tap studio studio being a poor game have anything to do with it? The reason why it was put up was to make a point that the musci library can be accessed. On anouther not space invaders infinity gene also make unique levels from your own music
TheSporkWithin
03-21-2010, 10:32 AM
No.
Tap Studio uses preconstructed beat templates which they overlay on top of your songs, it's like downloading a stepmania step pack for each song you want to play. From what I understand most of these are user-created and the quality is terrible.
Space Invaders: Infinity Gene doesn't generate the levels based on the music, but based on the MP3's tags, the genre, album title, release date, track number, etc, using these items as seeds for random level generation. This is all that any app has access to, they are not allowed to actually access the MP3 file itself as that would allow it to potentially modify files, which is something Apple doesn't want apps doing.
Stop bumping this thread unless there's actual word from this developer, or there's some change in 4.0 which allows applications to fully access the contents of your music library.
