Yeah I wasn't expecting them to announce another game. I mean we already have NOVA 2, Asphalt 6, Dungeon Hunter and Shadow Guardian to look forward to, and now this. Well, personally I'm not looking forward to this game because I don't like japanesey RPG games (like Square Enix's RPGs).

Woah is there anything Gameloft cant do ? I know they known to many as cloneloft but they push the bar when it comes to games by quite a large extent, their modern combat is insane and Spiderman was brilliant, I hope this is as good :D it reminds me of kingdom hearts :)
PS I just think that aeon lion thing needs work - but another buy for me :D

Exactly. They didnt even try to croak their voice while speaking as that troll goblin creature
The voice acting seems to vary in quality. If I remember correctly, Zombie Infection, Splinter Cell Conviction and Modern Combat 2 had great voice acting. But the voice acting from this trailer reminds me of their early days when all their games had bad voice acting.

If you've played Final Fantasy XIII, (I have), you'll totally see that's the inspiration for this.
Although, It seemed Shadow Guardian was really looking great, visually.
It seems Gameloft is making a step backwards on this title, in the same regard.
(lighting, textures, block hands, shadowing)
Disappointing.

Good god gameloft please hire some better voice actors. Only a few games have had decent voice acting like Spiderman, but this is just awful. That monster sounded like a prepubescent teenager.

Well I think we should wait for some screenshots before jumping to conclusions about the graphics. If you look at the Shadow Guardian and Asphalt 6 trailers, they look nowhere near as good as the screenshots. I've noticed that in most of gamelofts videos, the graphics never look as good as the screenshots or when you're actually playing the game.

Hahahahaha, they totally messed up the character design.
Really, the hair, hahaha.... they should have hired some asian artists.
And they are using their own engine over and over again.
All of their current games are absolutely looking the same.
This is kind of an anti-trailer to me. Looks bad, sounds bad - thanks for showing me, what I definitely don't want to buy :)

Add this to the current pile of upcoming Gameloft games to get. Its official, I'm gonna have to wait for a sale to get all of their games. This looks really good though. Reminds me Final Fantasy. But for Cryin Out Loud please fix the HORRIBLE VOICE ACTING. I'm a huge Gameloft fan but sometimes there voice acting just makes me want to put the game on mute.

Graphics look like shit. Seriously.
And don't tell me, "It's an Alpha Build." When was the last time Gameloft showed an alpha build and the graphics were improved at all in the final version. GT: Racing had a slight improvement if anything. Gangstar 2 alpha looked like crap and the final version looked just as bad and was very buggy. Modern Combat 2 looked the same. Splinter Cell looked the same too. I can go on and on.

Gangstar 2 was MUCH better graphically, especially on retina displayed devices. As for Modern Combat 2, they released a preview of it when it was quite late into development.
So yeah, it's an alpha build. And anyway, there's always a first time for everything.

100% true. All Gameloft games shown, are always representative of the final product. Who knows, this title may end being a really fun jrpg clone.
After watching the trailer yet again, it doesnt seem too bad. At least it may hopefully have actual game environment and combat variations, unlike their other releases....
Which seem to utilize recycled aspects (palm trees, jungles, shooting/combat, character animations, slide down a line/pole, etc.) hoping for a breath of fresh air in the gameplay department.

the voice acting is terrible :(
dumaz1000
11-26-2010, 04:13 PM
The voice acting in Galaxy of Fire 2 is also terrible. Less people seem to complain about that. I supposed because it's not Gameloft, people tend to nitpick less.
The truth is by not hiring professional talent for their voice-over work, they are able to turn about and sell the final product for cheaper. It creates less overhead. This is one of the shortcuts that I always talk about, shortcuts that allow Gameloft to jusfity selling games for 6.99 a piece. If Gameloft did not cut certain corners during the development process, these games could easily cost 19.99 a piece. People would definitely complain about that now, wouldn't they.
How much did it cost for Treyarch to sign Kiefer Sutherland to do voice-over work in World at War, or Ice Cube for Black Ops. The answer, a lot. This is part of the reason why you end up paying 59.99 for those games.
Musclegiant
11-26-2010, 04:29 PM
I strongly disagree. GoF2 had some pretty good voice acting, but with how much content is in the game hearing the same characters talk non stop gets grating. Of course it wasn't five star voice acting but it's way better than gamelofts.

I think more like Snow, and in the trailer you see a Vanille look alike. They are obviously aping Final Fantasy XIII and Chaos Rings.
I swear Eternal Legacy sounds like a joke name we'd give to a make-believe Final Fantasy ripoff by Gameloft. Their studio must be a sweatshop making sneakers as well.

So y'all telling me you come to watch the gameloft trailers and keep up to date with the and some even buy them y'all do all that to talk bad about them now that's just crazy just don't buy it and keep moving
One thing I'm starting to worry about: back last year Gameloft's A-team used to handle the clones, licensed IPs and original games while their B-team handled their sports games. You could literally hold the game in front of you and see who made what.
(I've no idea who does the casual stuff.)
Now with all the stuff they are cranking out, I'm wondering if they've added more teams, or *shudder* put the B-team onto the clones stuff.
One hope I DO have is that Gameloft is the mystery dev that licensed Epic Games' engine and will use it for games coming in late 2011.

The main character models seem alright to me, but the monsters and environments look pretty awful. Frankly, if it has a decent story, well-thought-out combat mechanic, and an interesting world to explore, I'll be all over it. I'm not too hopeful, though.

Well, that was ... something. Unusually for Gameloft, I thought the graphics and animations here were pretty poor; extremely low poly counts, crap textures, poor shading, horribly obvious skyboxing in the outdoor scenes. And that voice acting! It's absolutely cringeworthy -- I mean that's Sega-class awful. I'd have to play this on mute just to keep from wincing at every cutscene.
Gameloft really phoned this one in. Long distance. From Mars. On an iPhone 4 without a case while touching the naughty place. And I normally like their stuff, derivative as it is.

I am super excited for this. As far as the graphics go how many rpg's are near this quality, almost none. Also unlike most people I have no problem with clones, a good game is a good game. The only thing that annoyed me about the trailer was the voice acting.

Seriously? Gameloft do you have to copy all the major titles that were from the console games? The only reason why Gameloft is so successful is because they copy all the great console games like COD, God of War, GTA, and now Final Fantasy.
BUT the game looks like it's worth trying. The graphics right now looks horrible, but I'm sure they'll improve it sooner or later, but if it's over $5 than it's not worth it.

I think that it's good that they base their iPhone games on other games. Cause we get gaming which may never come to us if we wait for the actual dev's. But it is a double sided sword, cause they might end up fudging the game... But gameloft has been really lifting up their game!

Well, JRPGs have been ripping off Miyazaki (and Castle in the Sky specifically) for many years. And Miyazaki was, of course, inspired by Gulliver's Travels, so I guess it all comes full circle.
It seems kind of silly to accuse Gameloft of ripping off anybody with this game; the tropes on display have been used and reused by pretty much everyone within the JRPG genre.

and then the movie Final Fantasy, really confused the hell out of me.
I'm surprised that Gameloft didn't opt to make a WoW clone and make bajillions of dollars. I know they could pull it off.

Yeah, I feel the same way about JRPGs. I played a couple Final Fantasy games and hated them. I love Japan and traditional Japanese art, but I've never been attracted to contemporary Japanese art styles such as anime. I mentioned that too, in the Gameloft clone thread. A MMORPG. But Gameloft has never been much for the freemium/IAP model, which is how all MMOs operate on the iDevice. Gameloft's infrastructure isn't geared that way. Plus MMO servers must be monitored and updated with some measure of frequency in order to maintain balance & stability. Gameloft doesn't do that either.

I'm like the opposite. Never got into western RPGs. IMO they are usually so repetitive and have boring combat. And I can't believe you hate anime, what did you watch? There are a ton of really good ones. I guess it's just different tastes. If Eternal Legacy can turn out decent (even if like 100% cloned) I'm sure it will still sell pretty good, considering the amount of people here at TA is extremely small compared to all iDevice gamers in the world (which I bet like half of them are into FF).

Very much different tastes. I've never liked Anime of any sort and I've never been into JRPGs (with a few very rare exceptions). On the other hand I love western RPGs. I grew up with classic 8 and 16-bitters like the Ultima series, Phantasie, Dungeon Master, Bard's Tale, etc. The only JRPGs I've ever gotten into were the first Zelda (back in the day), Phantasy Star, and currently Ash. (And Spirit Hunter Mineko when it's done, though admittedly there are additional reasons why it will be awesome. :D)

8man After, is a great, great anime...
But I too love jrpgs, as well as western RPGs. I like the party, and strategy aspect of jrpgs. I like the exploration and combat in some western RPGs.
My 2 favorite jrpgs this gen have been: Tales of Vesperia and Lost Odyssey.
My 2 favorite wrpgs this gen have been: Mass Effect (1/2) and Dragon Age Origins.
I hope Eternal Legacy ends up being good, I do fear they took inspiration moreso, from Final Fantasy XIII (judging from the brief trailer)
It also wouldn't surprise me, if they took the combat inspiration from Final Fantasy XIII as well. Seeing as Final Fantasy XIII played almost similarly to some Gameloft titles, that would mean Gameloft would save on creating new mechanics and just recycle mechanics they've used with a new "skin."
I'm not expecting turn based battles. I'm expecting real time combat/beat em up, with some spells that you'd fire off - using a jrpg look Alike character.
I'll probably buy it, but not initially unless it has positive reviews.
However, I'm buying Shadow Guardian on day1.

I never played Uncharted, I'm a 360 gamer...bit I've heard great things about it. It's supposed to be an amazing series, so...
Having never played Uncharted, I'm looking forward to Shadow Guardian.
I wish they would clone Mass Effect, though I'm sure EA would fight them on that...
Alas, Mass Effect 2 is coming over to the PS3, enjoy that game. It really is one of the best games I've ever played. I'm sure you'll love it.
Im crossing my fingers that Eternal Legacy ends up better than expected. It could be the most un Gameloft type game, Gameloft has ever done. That is if they take the right risks.

Juding from the trailer, we have a Cloud Look-alike, Rosa Look-alike, Sephiroth Look-alike, Vanille with more clothes on and a Snow-Lookalike. Those are from Final Fantasy.
Then we got Malfurion look-alike and I think Dr Doom at the end.

I don't think, had Gameloft used the unreal 3 engine, that we'd see an open world wrpg.
If they did use the unreal 3 engine, this game would have been a perfect fit.
Lost Odyssey used unreal 3, and was brilliant. Since most jrpgs are corridor based, or more linear it would probably be easier, to implement unreal 3 with this type of game.
Epic mentioned one of the big league iOS publisher/developers have already talked to them about using this engine. I think it's either EA or Gameloft.
I wonder, if it is in fact Gameloft, maybe that's why we've seen very little in terms of Dungeon Hunter 2. Maybe, they decided to use the engine after all, but apply it toward Dungeon Hunter 2. It's not like Gameloft to show a title, only to have it vanish.
Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

Gameloft isn't going to pay Epic on the back-end for royalty fees in order to use the Unreal Engine. That would be a decisively stupid move. Their in-house engines are more than adaquate. They don't need Epic's. Especially if you look at games like NOVA 2 and Shadow Guardian. Gameloft is capable of producing games graphically on-par with Epic, if they want to. Some Gameloft games utilize lesser engines and are scaled down, but when they want to go all out for the heavy hitters, like NOVA and Modern Combat, they are more than capable of holding their own graphics-wise. Gameloft will never produce an Unreal Engine game.

Actually, Zenimax Media retains those rights. They own Bethesda (Elderscrolls) and id Software.
Not EA, though EA does now own the rights to Mass Effect 2 and on, as they now own Bioware.

Never say never. Ubisoft uses unreal engine, and they're more than capable. They are also very, very closely entwined with Gameloft. EA is also capable, yet they use unreal engine, too.
Since EA is already a license holder of the tech, I expect to see them using it soon.
EA games using the engine: Mass Effect 2, Mirrors Edge...

Without a half-compelling story, RPGs tend to fail, especially linear, eastern-inspired RPGs. Gameloft has set the bar low in terms of story telling, and the trailer isn't inspiring confidence.

I'm telling you, if Gameloft wanted to do quality voice-acting, they could do it. But they would have to pay a considerable amount for that. Real voice-actors cost real money to employ. In turn, Gameloft would have no choice but to charge extra for their games. The biggest draw of Gameloft games is their low price combined with the relative quality of the product. It's not perfect, granted, but for that price it's damn good. People need a better sense of perspective here. Unless you want to pay 19.99 for your Gameloft games, instead of the 6.99 that you are currently paying, then stop complaining about the voice-acting.

They need to go all out with a game, use the unreal ungine, good voice acting, graphics that can compete with newer releases like rage, and just charge the sh!t out of it. Make it 15 dollars, that way they can make more profit (hopefully) and feel confident to make games with a higher development cost and still do successfully on the appstore.

Lack of confidence is not their problem. They are extremely successful with this cloning strategy. Most of their games sell very well at $5 or more, and they seem to have a very firm grasp on the tools and techniques required to just crank out these games month after month. They won't feel any need to change their business plan unless the major studios start competing with them directly by porting their big titles to iOS themselves.

Gameloft's JRPG Eternal Legacy
Perhaps this is Gameloft's first fantasy?
December 3, 2010
Eternal Legacy is Gameloft's shot at recreating a Japanese-style RPG JRPG, if you will for the iPhone. To be perfectly honest, after some time with a preview version of Eternal Legacy, it's obvious that somebody over at Gameloft has played some Final Fantasy XIII.
As the silver-haired hero Astrian, you must save the nation of Algoad from an oppressive force that threatens the bond between humanity and the natural world. Fortunately, you have some companions along for the ride, such as the churlish Taric and brave Lysty. All three heroes are definitely cut from the same cloth as Snow, Lightning, Vanille and other recent Final Fantasy stars. Even the buckles on their clothes are ripped straight out of the JRPG design book. But, hey when in Rome
http://wirelessmedia.ign.com/wireless/image/article/113/1138241/eternal-legacy-20101203095325464-000.jpg
Yep, that's a JRPG alright.
I did like the combat in Eternal Legacy quite a bit. Not only are there no random battles you can see monsters on the maps but the turn-based battles move along at a really good clip. You can stack up to three moves at a time, but you can also adjust your tactics as needed. If the battle started going against me, it was easy to either slip in a heal spell or unleash a special attack. Plus, Eternal Legacy also borrows Final Fantasy XIII's paradigm system. You can tailor the behavior of your companions by selecting certain personalities, such as berserker, predator, defender, and healer.
Eternal Legacy looks fantastic on a Retina display. Whether or not you want to complain over Gameloft lifting the Final Fantasy aesthetic, there is no denying that Eternal Legacy is an incredibly attractive adventure. Bold, bright colors. Great enemy designs. Fantastical landscapes. Eternal Legacy is a feast for the eyes if nothing else.
Eternal Legacy should slash its way into the App Store by the end of 2011. We'll have a full review on IGN Wireless so you know whether or not to drop the download dollars (and the massive time commitment) into Gameloft's JRPG homage.

Gameloft has announced six games, officially. All six of them will be out by the end of January. This may be Gameloft's biggest run ever. The appstore is only really "open" for three weeks in december (I don't think games can be uploaded to itunes during the week of Christmas), so concievably they could release what amounts essentially to six games in six weeks. Maybe they'll take off one week out of the possible seven. Anyway, this will be a January 2011 release.

The video really defined the game, in ways photos and screenshots could not.
I had very much been maintained an opinion of "wait and see..." with Eternal Legacy. This game is now elevated higher on my "Must" list than ever before.
(I loved Lost Odyssey, on 360. I also enjoy jrpgs.)
This game will fill a huge void on iOS and look stunning doing so, all without so much as batting an eyelash.
I almost wish Asphalt 6 were never coming, as it takes up a week that a real gem COULD have been released.
This looks incredible and falls right after: Aralon, Nova 2, Infinity Blade and Shadow Guardian, as my personal must buy games.

But I'd love to see videos, as announcements and pics only convey so much. This is one of those cases, where I had lower expectations. The video sold me.
Pictures or words, can only convey so much about a game. It's when a video comes along, showing those fine points, that the picture really becomes clear.
Take Infinity Blade. Chair described the gameplay, but still people were confused and wondered with much imagination, how the game would play. After a video showed the fighting and exploration, we finally had a genuine perspective and clarity on the matter.
I love TouchArcade dearly, they just need to get with the program and wrangle exclusive hands on impressions and videos.

Does appear to be turn-based, but it looks fricken awesome. A game like this cannot have a lame story though, which worries me. Bad voice acting, I could begrudgingly accept, but crappy storytelling in a JRPG, I cannot. Although, admittedly, not every Gameloft game has featured terrible writing. Never stellar writing, granted, but certainly passable at times. At other times though, not passable at all.
And I agree that Asphalt is a waste of release space. Tired and formulatic, dull, boring and uninspired drivel. I really can't think of a worse non-sports related franchise for Gameloft other than Asphalt. Gameloft sucks at sports, but everything else they do is usually solid, with the exception of Asphalt.
But I'd love to see videos, as announcements and pics only convey so much. This is one of those cases, where I had lower expectations. The video sold me.

Thing is, these forums have always acted like the front page blog, in that posters post videos here anyway, so we all end up having videos to go along with Toucharcade's writeups anyway. Hell, I do it all the time myself. :)
Compare that with the community for Pocketgamer, SlidetoPlay, Touchgen, etc. Even though they get tons of web traffic and page hits, their forums and comment sections are utter ghost towns.

I'm hoping Eternal Legacy doesn't have any of those annoying puzzles like in Chaos Rings. Those completely ruined the flow of the game IMO.
I believe Gameloft will announce a 7th game called Space Fracture which will hopefully be a dead space experience.
heres the link. scroll down to last paragraph.

That looks pretty darned impressive. I hope it's long and the story is good, because the graphics and combat look great. This is right up there with NOVA 2 and RR2 at the top of my most-wanted list.

Wow this game looks a lot better than I expected. If the story is decent and the game has a good amount of length, turn based jrpgs USUALLY do, then this game is going to crush Chaos Rings hands down. Chaos rings is full of content and has beautiful graphics but the combat was meh and the equipment was painfully dull. Story got repetitive too. I can't wait :D

It all comes down to the storytelling. Gameloft will have to step up their game in that regard. They've made some games with terrible story elements in the past. Just horrendous. Often those are games where the plot and characters are of a secondary nature anyway, so I will continue to play the game and not give any heed to the awful writing, but in a jrpg, awful characters and bland storytelling cannot be tolerated.
Games like Zombie Infection and BIA 2 do show that Gameloft has some potential to write decent scripts. Not great, and obviously they are still dervivative in nature, but passable. We'll have to see if they can pull it off here.

I like the fact that there is enough characters, it seems, in the game to mix and match your party to play the way YOU want to. Rather than everyone uses the same party, etc. Game definitely looks better than originally thought, and as others said with a decent story this game will be huge. Bigger than chaos rings.

According to this article (http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/37168/eternal-legacy-iphone-hands-on) the game will be 16 hours long.

Heck, you are right!!
Make no bones about it, Eternal Legacy, coming from Gameloft for the iPhone and iPod touch just before Christmas, is the company's love affair with Japanese RPGs made real.
I can't wait for this and Aralon - yay! :D
They also spoke of full and good voice acting, so maybe the first trailer was the raw version.
Normally, the dubbing or voiceover is made as one of the last steps before the development finishes everything.

Again, I wish Asphalt 6 were never releasing. If it weren't, then another more solid title, like this could have come sooner and taken it's release spot.

Extremely, extremely unlikely. However, I certainly wouldn't protest. Don't get your hopes up though, because I tend to doubt it.

That's how I felt at first. But have you seen the gameplay video? A6 looks as much like Burnout as this one looks like FFXIII :D

I don't care what it looks like. It would have to play like Burnout, something that the last two Asphalt games didn't come anywhere to doing.

You do realize that the creation of Asphalt 6 doesn't interfere with Eternal Legacy's release, right? Adding more people to the creation of a game doesn't speed it up necessarily.

It's not the creation of the game, that sours me.
It's the fact that it's being made, which means it has to be released. Unfortunately the crummy part in all of this really, has to do with Gameloft releasing it soon.
Personally, the game looks like a dud...
So what I'm saying is, if it weren't made or releasing when they are releasing it, that week could have been slated to release a better game.
Basically, there are only so many weeks in a month. I'd rather have had Eternal Legacy have the opportunity to come sooner vs. Asphalt 6 come out when it will.
It's taking a space in line, better served by better games.

A6 looks nothing like past Asphalts; the engine was overhauled and it shows. I think the gameplay video speaks for itself. We'll see if it controls as well as it looks.
Anyway, EL looks beautiful. I'm more concerned about how this one will turn out, because of Gamelofts track record on storytelling. Also, the turnbased battle system is new to them. Then again it just comes down to how accurately they will clone the system from FF.

Wow. . .okay so its available already - should we get it - any comprehensive feedback. . . !?!?
Wow, really shows how unpredictable Gameloft is. Nearly everyone here (including me) was dead sure this would be one of the last to be released and instead it's the first. :)

I have been playing for about an hour now, and id say the game is ok nothing special. The story doesnt have me interested at all, which is not good as this is a final fantasy clone. And voice acting varies immensly, from ok to wtf Good thing you can turn them off! The battle system is very good, reminds me of final fantasy 13, and you have to option to control either just one character or all. Graphics are ok, character models arent too bad, but environment textures are very low res, especially skyboxes. If youre on a budget just wait for aralon for your rpg needs, otherwise its a nice little rpg. Nothing like it yet but its not amazing.
also you can see enemies on the map, but they just walk in circles really fast and it looks....dumb. hard to get past them if you dont wanna fight as well since they all move 3x your speed.
I've played it for 10 minutes on my iPad. The graphics look pretty good upscaled, there are jaggies, but that's to be expected.
I loled when he said "My name is Ashton, I am a guardian"
So they still havent hired any voice actors yet?
Apparently not. I just recently got Crimson Gem Saga. It's a decent RPG, but I've been very pleasantly surprised by the voice dialogue - especially for a couple of the main characters, the actors did an awesome job. I often overlooked this aspect of games, but it does add value.
