We all know December is the longest and most unfair month of the year: why wait until the 25th to receive your Christmas presents? We at Gameloft have decided to put an end to this mean practice by offering a surprise gift every day in December until Christmas to all our fans and anyone who is in the festive spirit.

And the best part is how simple it is! Every day we’ll announce our surprise on our Twitter account (http://twitter.com/gameloft). All you have to do is click on the link in the tweet to enjoy your present. What can you get? A free game to play on your iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Android device, or on Facebook? Exclusive sneak peeks or cool goodies for our hottest upcoming Christmas games? Crazy game discounts? Special, free in-game content? Rest assured you’ll get all this and a little bit more in the end… that is, if you don’t miss a day! So follow @Gameloft on Twitter and, starting December 1, check your timeline every day to discover your gift.

Enjoy our Twitter Advent Calendar and have a great holiday season!

Q&A:

1. How can I participate? What do I have to do?
This is not a contest! There are no questions to answer and no lotteries to enter. You can grab a present once you see the Advent Calendar tweet of the day and time hasn’t run out yet. Just click on the link in the tweet to access your present.

2. Is there a limited supply of free presents you’re giving out?
No, there will be no limit to how many people can download or access the daily present. Just be quick!

3. Is Twitter the only way to hear about the daily gift? Is there anywhere else I can find out about the gift of the day?
We’ll only let you know what each daily gift is and how to access it on Twitter, because it allows for instant communication with our fans and because the availability of each present is limited. You may find news about it elsewhere on the web, but we can’t guarantee the gift will still be available when you see it.

4. How long will each gift be available?
All gifts will expire after 24 hours, so be quick!

5. I don’t have a Twitter account. What should I do?
We suggest you create one. It takes only a few seconds at http://twitter.com/! Once you’re done and connected, go to http://twitter.com/gameloft and click on “Follow”. You’ll then receive all our tweets on the home page of your Twitter account. You can also download one of the many Twitter clients for iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and Android. Plenty of them are free and they allow you to receive tweets directly on your device.

This definately could be interesting. I mean 25 Gameloft games for free (think they mentioned add-ons too, but still). Don't own 25 of their games so I feel fairly confident that I'll get something. Looking forward to Wednesday for this and the AppVent calendar.

+1 to this

I've only had my iPhone since July so I'm fairly new to iOS gaming but have picked up a lot of quality titles on sale since then but NOVA is one that hasn't dropped since I've been interested in it so I would certainly like to get it before NOVA 2 comes out. If they give NOVA for free and I love it then I would definitely consider dropping the $7 for NOVA 2 when it comes out.

Wow, what a great day to register for the site. I'm pretty new to iOS gaming so I'm hoping Gameloft offers up some nice discounts/freebies to help build up my collection.

I've loved just about all the Gameloft games I've tried thus far.

Well "Exclusive sneak peeks or cool goodies for our hottest upcoming Christmas games" really makes me disappoints me. Knowing that, I just have a bad feeling only a couple games will be given away, not much add-ons for the games will be released, and most of it will just be that: sneak peeks at the crazy lineup of games they have in development.

And to whoever said a likely candidate for a game going free would be NOVA, I'd definitely agree.

Why is everyone so excited about Appvent? Personally since I found out about the free app sites in the last coupe months, there have been only a few apps that really seemed worth it to me. I won't complain about free games, but at the same time, what makes people think that Appvent is going to be any different? Maybe they've hinted at some big games being part of the promotion that I'm unaware of.

The Appvent Calendar is not your normal FAAD let-down. It only happens during the month of December and really has some quality indie apps that will be let free. But to be honest, with the emergence of sites like FAAD and such, I fear that this year the Appvent won't be as great as years past. But make no mistake, the Appvent Calendar is not just a free app site.

Yeah but how many Android games do they have that aren't on iOS as well? None? I'm not up on Android gaming so I don't know but I'd imagine that we won't have to worry about an Android game being free that isn't also available on iOS.

True, but we don't know exactly how Gameloft plans on doing this. They could very well make a certain game free on the Android Market only, even if it's on the iOS. There's nothing stopping them from not making the freebies work across all platforms.

I'm curious what they meant with sneak peaks into future titles and in game content. Apparently these gifts are good for 24 hours, so I'm not sure how either of those are done. Are they removing any trailers/demos/screen shots after a day? For in game content, as far as I know Gameloft doesn't do IAP, so how is that going to work within a limited time?

Looks like the Android folks are complaining on twitter about the iPhone only gift.

The vast majority of Gameloft games are for iPhone and the majority of sales for smartphone games are for iPhone (I've read that Gameloft makes far more on iPhone games vs. Android games), so the majority of gifts better be for iPhone users.

Does that make a trailer a gift? Maybe I should also tell you that paste is not a food.

I'm afraid many of the sales (that may or may not be scheduled for this) will be on games I already own. I've bought so many GL games. I'm pulling for a 99c Real Golf!

On a side note, getting a kick out of the fact that some users on certain android handsets (Nexus One, Fascinate, Desire.. and more..) are having issues downloading the app, prompting Gameloft to apologize on twitter.

Just more mounting evidence on why Android's a fragmented mess.

Tomorrow might even be a facebook something. Since I don't use facebook I have no clue what that might be but they seem to be spreading the wealth across platforms and it is not an iOS exclusive give away.

I'm not big on facebook games either but I wonder what they could even do for the facebook games. I only seen one game they have for facebook and I assume it's a freemium game like all other facebook games. What could they offer, except maybe offer a sale on whatever in-game items you can buy with real money.

Edit- They could be making there facebook game available on the iphone, I don't see it on there now. I hope not though.

I dunno how Facebook works but if it is freemium stuff then that would be covered in their "Special, free in-game content?" statement.

Like on We Rule, if you logged in a certain day you got a lump of mojo for free that day just for logging in. Something like that?

(I don't even know the game they have on facebook that is how Facebook illiterate I am so I could be totally off base, just guessing and assuming they will run through all their platforms equally if possible)

I just did a little searching and noticed that Gameloft has a new facebook game, "Green Farm". Apparently it's their Farmville clone with an items shop of course. I wouldn't be suprised if one of the giveaways are free items or discounts for the game.

It seems like Gameloft really wants to split up the "prsents" so I wouldn't be suprised if the next gift is facebook related, most likely in game items. I can't see any other way they'd give away exclusive in game items as I don't believe their iOS/Andriod/Windows 7 games have IAP.

I may be way off, but I don't expect another iPhone sale or free game until Sunday or Monday.

Same here. If I get one free or discounted game I want, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

You can tell by Gameloft's twitter responses that they are getting harassed daily. Android people were bitching all day Wednesday about the free iPhone game. Yesterday, people were bitching about a trailer and today iOS people are complaining about a free Android game. People really need to pay close attention to the original tweet/blog post announcing this. They spelled out exactly what is happening. Of course that didn't stop Gameloft having to respond to some dude essentially calling them liars for not having a free game every day. If I was Gameloft, I'd be questioning if it's even worth the effort.

I do look forward to seeing the complainers come out in full force when the present of the day is some exclusive plant or farm building in Green Farm (their Farmville clone on facebook).

Many peoples have this tendency to only remember reading what THEY want to read, hence missing out on important information and complaints about it later. I've met a lot of these peoples.

To me, i think Gameloft is very generous to even put 2 of their iphone games for free. It's already a great Christmas presents for me since their game rarely go for free. Appreciate their efforts, or you will never see their games for free ever again.

Gameloft 10th anniversary was this year, not last year :) and they gift 10 games for free. If 10 games for free apply to this advent, still got 18 days to shoot free games before Dec 25th.

And a lot of people didn't get most of those free games due to it only being free for 2 hours at random times of the day. Of course their events always have some kind of smart advertising trick to it, same as last time they had an event.

How can anyone complain or be disappointed about getting a free game or big discount (Blokus iPad) from Gameloft here and there this month? Just be thankful they're even doing an event like this.

There's nothing wrong with being disappointed. Go on and feel indebted to publishers for sales and freebies if you like, but they don't do it as a favor to anybody. Unlimited supply and the speed of the app store encourage such marketing to maintain a level of exposure. Nevertheless, people will continue to cry "entitlement" at anyone not eternally grateful for a free trailer or wallpaper. FFS.

Anyway, as someone who's had no interest in the Asphalt series up to now, A6 looks freaking sweet! Added to my most anticipated.

It's pathetic people are disappointed at getting free games. Seriously. Some iPhone gamers have gotten way to whiny over something like this.

No other market gets many games that go free for a day but still get a lot a lot of people whining over getting some free games. What do you want GameLoft to do? Make one of their big games go free for entire day, one every day for a month? Jesus. There's nothing to get disappointed over - it's free and they get advertising out of it - it's idiotic if you really are disappointed about this event.

What's kind of funny about all this is that Gameloft runs $.99 sales fairly regularly on a good chunk of their games (except their latest and greatest). So while I agree that people shouldn't be complaining that this event isn't all free games, their attempt at an Appvent calendar is pretty pathetic overall considering how much they played this up and, for the most part, their regular sales have been better.

But it got your attention though huh? And I bet you check every day to see if there IS a free iPhone game right? What if you have Playstation and just found out that UNO is on sale for 99 cents? Then they got an extra sale from that just because people are now following their twitter obsessively not to miss anything. It's called getting exposure. And no matter what anyone is whining about it is working.

There was even some mention here that they weren't interested in Asphalt as a series but that trailer made them want the next one - number 6. Bet more people than just that poster thought that as well.

So to me, in just 6 days, it appears that Gameloft has set out to do what they intended - garner more attention and get more people excited for their next twitter. Sure people might whine and complain but they actually WATCH the trailer that was released, they actually LOOKED AT the wallpapers, they REMEMBERED that Dungeon Hunter 2 was coming soon - all things that were not freebies per se for an iOS user. This is marketing 101. They don't need you to be thankful actually.

If people are really upset about it they can unfollow Gameloft. Or not check this thread. Or not care about Gameloft. But it appears that the potential for anything free will prevent that from happening and again, Gameloft did what they set out to do. They did not HAVE to do anything, yet they are. It's a gift, it's what they felt they could give, if it doesn't measure up to anyone's expectations, so be it.

When Grandma gives you a pair of socks for Christmas this year why not whine to her you wanted something better.

Believe me, I'm not upset and maybe I shouldn't even posted what I did. I just thought it's kind of ironic that we DO get a lot of sales from Gameloft throughout the year so that's why this feels like a bit of a let down. You're absolutely right, Gameloft is getting the attention it was seeking so from their point of view, this was a success.

Re Asphalt 6, that was me, and I didn't bother with the intro video. I caught the gameplay video posted in the A6 thread (which also has footage of Shadow Guardian and NOVA 2). Unlike the intro video, the one I saw demonstrated actual gameplay which got me pumped for the game. And it wasn't part of the appvent calendar. I don't understand all this free PR for the most successful app store games company in the world. It's bizarre, really.

My apologies not to name you, I was on the page where you couldn't see the other responses while I typed.

I guess though in answer to the PR for Gameloft and them already being successful - they need to stay successful and they don't seem to be a company to sit on their laurels. With more new iPod Touch and iPhone users who may not even know of the company they need to do something to keep themselves atop the heap of apps in the appstore. So any little bit they do to keep their name "out there" will be good for them.

I dunno, it seems to me they are doing what any successful company does - maintain PR because PR is less expensive than advertising, with probably more awareness gained. For instance I didn't know they had games on consoles but now I do. I knew of some other platforms (DSi and Wii) but not of the PSN for example.

I don't see what the problem is. You get a game or two, or even three out of it, while Gameloft reaches out to existing customers and attempts to get more. Looking at it your way there would be no need to have most of the commercials on TV or in magazines or on the web; no need for any PR via twitter; tons of ad execs and PR Management Companies would be left twiddling their thumbs waiting for the next start up company to hire them.

By "free PR" I meant all the attacks on people expressing disappointment over trailers and wallpapers. I'm not calling you out specifically; it is a fascinating phenomenon to me though, seeing the "you're a whiny baby with entitlement issues" posts telling people they ought to be more grateful. Some seem to think GL is doing us all a solid, giving away a game or two, and dropping prices temporarily. Actually, it's common practice in the app store for real reasons, and charity isn't one of them. I'd like any one of these posters (again, this is not a personal attack on you) to give us one example of something GL did in the app store as a favor to us, that had no practical benefit to them. It doesn't exist. Everything they do, including this appvent calendar, is a business move. Yet, some will continue to insist we ought to bend over backwards to kiss the ring of [insert publisher here] for bestowing a promotion upon us. It's silly, no?

[edit/ Re those posters saying "this sucks, I'll never buy from GL again as a protest!" are ridiculous, and I offer no defense for them]

Hmmm you seem to be misreading my posts. You appear to be agreeing with me more than you think. I am not disappointed in the least with anything they have done. In fact I said:

[some parts of original post snipped for brevity]

So to me, in just 6 days, it appears that Gameloft has set out to do what they intended - garner more attention and get more people excited for their next twitter. Sure people might whine and complain but they actually WATCH the trailer that was released, they actually LOOKED AT the wallpapers, they REMEMBERED that Dungeon Hunter 2 was coming soon - all things that were not freebies per se for an iOS user. This is marketing 101. They don't need you to be thankful actually.

When Grandma gives you a pair of socks for Christmas this year why not whine to her you wanted something better.

Not asking you to bend over backwards, not asking you for anything frankly. Merely pointing out the obvious which apparently you know - this is a PR move for Gameloft that has some beneficial fallout to the consumer. Whether or not anyone is grateful doesn't matter because Gameloft did what it set out to do - gain PR. NOT hand out their entire inventory for free as a goodwill act.

But as an aside, I do think its juvenile to whine over whatever it is they give, just like it would be juvenile to whine to Grandma. I don't think its entitlement actually - to me it's more of a spoiled 5 year old brat crying over a gift they didn't receive. Don't parents teach their kids to be polite anymore?

Ok maybe you were totally agreeing with me. But when you say "I'm not calling you out specifically" or "not a personal attack on you" it does group me in the disappointed whiner category which I am most definitely not. I was neutral on that - not complaining nor complaining about the complaining. My points had to do with Gameloft only - they are accomplishing what they hoped it would seem.

So truce?

I was actually lumping you in with the folks attacking the "whiners." I wanted you to know my beef wasn't really with you as I haven't seen you post anything obnoxious. Well besides the aside in your post before last ;) Basically, I'm just irritated at the publisher/developer worship around here. If a forum member wants to bitch about a lame gift, why does it irk anybody? Maybe they would prefer grandmas socks to an Eternal Legacy wallpaper ;) Gameloft will be fine; they dont need pitbulls in the TA threads. Anyway, of course we have a truce. No harm, no foul.

Gameloft 10th anniversary was this year, not last year :) and they gift 10 games for free. If 10 games for free apply to this advent, still got 18 days to shoot free games before Dec 25th.
Oh yes, it was May this year, found the archive:

Yeah even for Christmas you can expect to not see any of their new games going on sale, especially when it comes to games that literally were just released. Even games like Spiderman and MC2 probably won't be on sale for another few months. AppShopper tends to indicate that the 5 month range is pretty accurate as far as $.99 sales goes for Gameloft games.

Well, would not be bad for DH2 (I only got EL because it's the better game, imo) and I'd surely buy it for a buck, too.

But that's not Gamelofts politics. Gameloft has a fan base, steady sale numbers, they don't wanna screw their relationship with their customers.
So, a price drop will be unlikely - but who knows? ;)

Actually this is probably their best so far... I bought Driver on launch day but only played an hour or so, loved it on PSX but the touch controls really suck for that game.

Now let's listen to those StarFront tracks :)

Edit: Sigh~ It's bad...

This advent sucks... I didn't expect a free game every day but seriously this is crap. I know people say at least there doing one but they could at least make it good! Oh well I guess i haven't lost anything

I downloaded both Driver and Rayman. I would never have purchased either one, so I guess it was cool to try them out at no charge. Probably won't keep them on my iPod forever, but I've been playing them a little. If I would have had the hard drive space, I probably would have grabbed Real Golf too. Picked up Asphalt 5 at Thanksgiving for $.99, so I'm not really complaining. I've picked up like 25 apps this holiday season, and have only spent $8 or $9....
