View Full Version : Poll: Favorite Genre/Category of Games

Kris Jones

This is a poll to determine the overall favorite genre of games for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

I will post the genre and example games within that genre and I want to see what TA members would vote. (I apologize in advance if there is already such a thread. I did a search of the forums but found nothing.)

EDIT: It would also be great if you posted why you chose your answer. It would help in determining what makes that category good.

Hey it would be helpful if you could create a poll with several genres for people to choose from (e.g. shooter, adventure, puzzles, etc.).

Lol, sorry to the above posters. It creates the thread before I finished doing the polls. A bit silly, but it's how it works. :D

Just edited the original post to ask for members to explain why they chose, just so others can see why that category is 'better' than the others!

I picked Puzzle games because Action and Strategy games are better on other systems.

Oh Spiffy you little devil.

It would be even MORE helpful if Apple got the genres right, then.

I pulled those example games from the app store in the first place.

Everyone knows that Apple is INCAPABLE of making a mistake...right?

I like action and adventure games, but adventure wins for me because most adventure games actually have a story and different levels, while a lot of action games do not.

1. Platformers (Mario Bros, Sonic)

2. RPG (Final Fantasy, Zelda, TWEWY)

3. Racing games with great freeplay mode (WaveRace 64, Motocross Madness)

I voted Puzzle because that is what I buy, but I can't stop playing Heavy Mach and Edge, go figure.

Hey Kris, add a "platformers" genre, because that's what I would pick! ;)

Kris Jones
03-22-2009, 04:04 PM
Yeah, Apple doesn't make mistakes, just unspecified "features" that the rest of us aren't "savvy" enough to understand.

I still remember a time when I saw, and I kid you not, stuff like iFart in the games section.

Anyway, seriously, I'll go with arcade action games. Especially if you're using this as a gauge for game development. Going arcade action is a good bet.
Yes, this is considered a 'market test' for upcoming games. So far we can see what people DON'T like.

We, as a publisher, expect to produce a game once a month and believe it is critical to get feedback from the customer base (members of TourchArcade are a great demographic for that.)

So I appreciate everyones feedback. Thank you.

I would add a platformers part to the poll, but I can't figure out how to edit the poll. Probably can't.

I voted for other, because my favorites are probably RPGs. Of course, I also like Adventure, Strategy and Puzzle games, and certain aspects of those genres hold a pretty close race with RPGs. But I would say RPGs come first.

How in the world did you not add RPG? It's a pretty massive genre. Especially when action and adventure have a grey line (they are usually referred to Action/Adventure games).

I like all varities of genres but I guess if I had to vote on one its Strategy with there being some good ones for iphone, but Im just a fan of good games not genres. Im the same way with music also ( except Country Music lol ).

Also should of prob added card games to board games genre as well I know I have plenty of card games myself and you completely left them out.

Although Im not as nitpicky as saying Bounce on is a action game lol, which I think its more adventure then action myself.

Ah yep no Sports option either didn't even notice that. Or RPG's for that matter I think is missing then again so are RPG's in general from iphone lol.

Cause well since this is what is your fav genre for iphone not overall in games cause ppl that like RPG's the most prob wouldnt vote for RPGs due to the lack of them or least any good ones on iphone.

Oh and hope that Sway lite is coming soon too Anders!

Agreed.

I'd love to see you guys (Illusion Labs) do a snowboarding game with a similar physics engine as Touchgrind, or even waterski/wakeboarding as corny as that may sound.:D

Would've voted Board if the examples were not the most boring board games ever (oh I forgot Reversi and Go). We have enough of those already.

So NO for traditional board games, definite YES for modern themed ones (go see the top/hot lists of www.boardgamegeek.com for a few examples). And most of those games are turn-based multiplayer strategy. Just what the audience wants :)

As far as I'm concerned yes, FF Tactics would be a strategy game.

How in the world did you not add RPG? It's a pretty massive genre. Especially when action and adventure have a grey line (they are usually referred to Action/Adventure games).

To me it doesn't seem to be that hard to distinguish between action and adventure. A true adventure game should be one that is heavy on story and simply requires thought and problem solving to finish (Infocom and the old Sierra are the best examples of producers of this type of game). An action game requires reflexes. Now you can certainly marry the two, but I prefer to keep my milk and cookies separate :).

hey people, i'm pretty sure that both platformer and RPG fall into the adventure category.

Sorry to double post, but you guys slipped in a bunch of responses while I was typing. The way I look at it, platformers are definitely not adventure (I'd lump them under action), and while RPGs could be construed as adventure games, the focus there is building up your character, whereas the focus in an adventure game is simply solving the puzzles. This is why questions like this are so tough, because there's always varying opinions on what defines a particular genre of game.

I would have to vote for strategy, followed by puzzle,
but I like platformers and RPG too.

Funny how the thread is asking for public opinion, yet it's the most incomplete poll I've ever seen, missing several major genres and placing some games in the wrong category (not to mention mentioning only a really narrow range of games the thread starter likes).
I guess "RPG", "FPS", "Platformer" and "Classic" doesn't ring a bell in this thread.
