Hi all,

Here's a rough demo video of the new game Blockees. Blockees is the super addictive sequel to iPhone puzzle game Blockee. In the new version we've added new block types as well as a awesome new editor so you can create you own Blockee puzzles and share them with your friends via Twitter and Facebook.

As I mentioned in the thread title we're also looking for beta testers to help test the game and come up with puzzles. If we use one of your puzzles you'll get your name in the credits. If you are interested DM me your UDID and device type. We'll be picking a range of devices and not everyone will get picked so make sure you get in early. If you've done previous testing for other developers let us know as it will stand you in good stead.

Update (11 Feb 2011): Thanks for all the interest. However, I'm no longer looking for beta testers as I'm running low of devices on my account and there is a fitness app I need to save some for later in the year.

Final call for testers/level creators (same thing really). The game is practically ready. Just needs some better levels in the bomb pack, could be yours.

I believe I joined, I've used testflight many times before but it ask me to register the device again although I already have, does it do it for every new game because it has never happened before. Anyway glad to help.

I'm not sure. I'm still trying to work out if testflight makes things easy. At the moment it seems to be a bit annoying as I have no idea which people are on my provisioning profiles and who's not... Might revert back to my old distribution method. We'll see.

Ha, thanks. Yeah, the bomb levels are tough to come up with. I'm really looking for levels with less moves though.

One other thing I'll say, I'm more likely to use the puzzles that look like this:

Than the ones that look like this:

Obviously, submit as many as you like, as varied as you like. However, the ones that look more orderly and are contained within the hedge are more likely to get picked for the final game, or get featured.

Getting featured is not a option in the game at the moment but it's already in the backend. It means that I give users another option when creating their own packs to get the puzzles that look good.

Game is looking really good.
So far the only thing I've found is that some levels are quite challenging, and hints cost 3 stars, so you can run out of hints really easily. Any chance to lower the star requirement to maybe 2 per hint?

To be honest, no. I actually think the hints spoil the game by making the hardest puzzle a 5 move puzzle which isn't very hard. I was actually tempted to make them cost 4 stars. However, I think I will leave them be. If you run out of stars you can always create a pack of 1-2 move puzzles and load up on stars.

Hi, i'm one of the beta testers :)

The game runs flawlessly on my iPhone 4 32GB so far.
Between the predecessor Blockee and the new one, i see plenty of enhancements. Blockees looks very polished.

For me, i wish an undo for the last move.

What's your name? There are two names in my recruitment section. I've not added them as I've got enough testers now and don't really want to use any more of my 100 devices. Seeing as you've mentioned it here though I'll add you. You will be the last though.

Just installed the 2.0, i think this has come a far, far way from the original blockee, so far I have one level created a's I just installed it, but it's not bad. Will keep testing and keep you updated.

Installed as well. I've also submitted a ton of bomb levels which you could consider. It would really help if you could download shared levels so you can play them when you don't have wifi or 3G

That is what the pack builder is for. I know you only get one pack but it was quite a last minute addition. If the sales of Blockees do well then you can expect a more robust user levels interface.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with that opinion of hints. I had quite a few requests for them though, so I add to them.

I had a crash while making a level and trying to submit it. The level disappeared and I had to start over. If it helps, I'm running an iPod Touch 4G on 4.2.1. Maybe a save for levels when you're not on 3G/Wifi?

Has anyone else had this problem. I've tested it with no connection and I just get an alert warning me which is what is meant to happen.

Anyway, I've been working on the lite version the last few days and it's practically done now. I've also created a new Twitter account (@Blockees (http://twitter.com/Blockees)) which will tweet each time someone shares a level. This will act as another way of finding new levels.

I've also changed the puzzle page on the website so it looks good in the browser on the iPhone. However, it is a little hard on the eyes in a desktop browser.

Nice! How about making it into a mobile page? Like if someone is viewing it through an iphone, they will be directed to and see this new page while if one is using a desktop, it is the old page?

I'll probably do that at some point. Especially if/when I port this to OS X. For the time being I think it's better just having that page. It's not really import on the desktop at the moment.

Yeah, to be clear I still want users of the lite version to be able to experience the creating part of the game as well as the sharing. However, they won't be able to play shared levels, only the ones they create.

Installed the lite. Seems like a good marketing technique. Has just about enough to get the player craving for more! I played through the first pack and didn't find anything really worth changing.

yeah the lite version seems to perfectly show off what the full game has to offer in my opinion and leaves the player wanting more.

Unfortunately I can't accept any more. I've taken on quite a lot and even though half the people seem to have just done it for a free game and given no feedback what-so-ever, I don't have enough devices left on my account.

That said, I do really appreciate the feedback the guys in this thread and on the Runloop forums have left and you'll all get a mention in the credits

Thats cool! I've had Vegas for a year now and I learn a new thing every time I use it :D

Also, sorry I haven't given much feedback for the last 2 builds. I've installed them and they worked fine. I wasn't able to really let you know, because I got swamped with school work and YouTube. :/

Here a question for you all:

Shall I put the music I used in the promo vid in the game itself? I search for hours to find the right music and feel that piece really has the right vibe. I'm wondering if it should be used to set the vibe in the game as well.

I bought it. The actual track only goes on for 1:20. I'd probably just do what flight control does and play it once and have it silent for the rest of the time. Or maybe an option to loop.

Installed latest versions for reg. and lite. I will spend the next 2-3 hours ..at least to test them.

No comments on previous builds I experienced no bugs.

Someone has reported a crash in the lite version (which actually means both versions as they run off the same code base) so we need to find it. I will not get rate down due to some stupid crash.

"Crash in Lite version: rainblocks puz. 4 or 5 not sure which. Unable to reproduce it. I tried solving 1 puzzle, but before i did i returned to menu to try another one 4 or 5 then crash."

The music makes me feel relaxing while playing the game
But, can you make the volume slider bars for both sound and music?

Also, can everyone also download and test the light version. I can see that only 3 people have downloaded that one so far. The lite version is probably even more important than the full version as it will be downloaded many more times than the full. If that version gives a bad impression I'm screwed.

No, didn't include you.

I have a total of about 30-35 beta testers. I lose track. However, it seem for most it is just an opportunity to get a free game and you never hear from them again. This wouldn't be a problem if Apple didn't limit the devices you can have registered on your account. When you only have 100 devices to play with and work on several different type of apps that all require different testing groups it gets a bit tricky.

I do really appreciate the feedback I get from you guys. And when the final app is ready it will be the people that have provided feedback in this thread that get mentioned in the game if not more.

The lite version is pretty good, it gives you a taste of the game without giving you to much. Sometimes when developers do lite versions they give to much away.

I like that in the home screen for the lite, when the blocks fall they land on the logo for available on the app store, I thought that it would fall right through it :D

I'll see what I can do.

okay, Iv'e tested the hell out of the lite version. completed all levels, played through with other apps running, without apps running, with wifi on, with wifi off, airplane mode on etc etc and I never got a single crash so I don't know why it crashed for that person

If you are getting crashes as well can you make a note of exactly what you are doing prior to the crash. This is really important. Also, what device are you using?

It seems like there's some problems with hints

I fully intend to release updates in the future with new packs, and new block types. These will be free updates. There will be no paid level packs or anything like that.

It should have 25 levels. Did you remove the old version from your device a few builds ago like I asked? The reason this is happening is that when you are building a pack, the built pack contains levels from the actual packs. This shouldn't happen because the levels are identified in the database and won't be returned. Unless of course you've got the wrong levels installed.

The hints menu says there are 0 hint available yet it gives you one. "This puzzle has 1 hint available: No hint" and "This puzzle has 0 hints available: Up." The hints are also quite cryptic and it is not clear wether you have to use this move as your first move or after you tapped on it.

Thanks for trying this out. I'm glad you like it. The hints system was a last minute addition and has been bolted on. I don't really have a lot of flexibility of how it's displayed without changing a lot of other things in the process which I'd rather not do at this stage.

Obviously I understand what it means perfectly but I'd like to know more about what you find cryptic about it and how you think it could be improved.

The issues I have are:
a) I need to use that standard panel.
b) I need to display the hints you've already used
c) I need to display how many hints there are remaining for that puzzle
d) I need to display the yes/no/close buttons.

Not a lot of space to display a lot of information. If anyone has any suggestions as to how I can improve this I'm open to hearing them.

Also regarding whether they are meant to be the first move or from where you currently are in the puzzle, it's always the first move. To make this clearer I could make it so that you can only use hints when the puzzle is in it's original state. Do you think that would help?

Oh, and about the level editor. It only overwrites existing objects if you drop them. I don't really know what could be done different with this. I wouldn't want to make it so that you can't move over other objects as it could render the move tool pointless in some situations.

Some of this stuff will come. Especially the pack builder stuff you mentioned. But for the time being it's feature complete. I'm tidy up a few areas that have been mentioned but I need to release this game as I have other work I need to do. I can't just keep adding and adding because I need to pay the bills. :-(

Sorry about the radio silence. It's been a busy couple of weeks for me as I've had to move home to a different city. That came with the usual frustrations of having no broadband etc. Anyway, all up and running at the moment and currently building a new and more robust back end for Blockees. Hopefully have some to show by the end of next week. If all goes well then I will submit. :eek:

I know how stressful it is moving. moved myself not too long ago so I feel your pain. lol. anyways, I haven't had any problems with the last build so far. was playing a little more last night and feel its definitely come a long way since the first build I tried.

In case anyone is playing Blockees at the moment, I'm about to replace the web services which will break all the old builds. There should be a new build later today that uses the new services.

The previous web services were thrown together quickly and as a result became a nightmare to maintain. I've completely rebuilt them and now it will be so much easier to a) implement new ones, b) tie into the website. The website is still being developed but the new framework will be uploaded with the along with the web services.

There should be a lot more scope for the future development of it now.

While solving 7 move or 8 move puzzles, it's always long. I suggest that when sharing puzzles, attach it with a solution.

I'm not adding any more features until 2.0 is in the store.

Even then, I doubt I'll be doing this. This only affects you when using hints. I didn't want to add hints anyway as I believe they spoil the game as you just use hints instead of trying to figure out the harder puzzles. Even I do this now just because they are there. If you have to suffer a little with waiting for these puzzles to solve first then maybe you'll think twice about using hints in the first place.

Blockees has been submitted. I hope to release early April.

Here is the description I've written. I think it covers everything:


Blockees is a totally addictive puzzle game you'll find hard to put down. Blockees includes 75 puzzles in 3 packs, a puzzle editor, puzzle pack generator, puzzle sharing, hints and Game Center.

How to play:

• Move ALL the Blockees at once by swiping.
• When Blockees of the same colour unite they will disappear.
• Unite all the coloured Blockees to win.


Learn about the different type of Blockees:

• The three main Blockee families: Red, Blue and Yellow. Reunite the family members with each other to complete the puzzles.

• Miserable Grey Blockees. These guys don't like anyone, not even each other. They just get in everyone's way.

• Rainbow Blockees; that will allow Blockees of different families to unite with each other.

• Bombs! Be careful of these. While they will only stun coloured Blockees and stop them from moving, they will actually destroy Grey Blockees and hedges.


Blockees also boasts the following features:

• Three level packs each containing 25 hand crafted puzzles. Blockees allows you to have 3 uncompleted puzzles available to play at any one time. This way if you get stuck on one puzzle you can still play others and come back to it later.

• Share your puzzles on the Blockees website (http://blocke.es) so that other players can download them in the Pack Generator. Send puzzles to your friends via Facebook and Twitter or simply direct them to the dedicated page for your puzzle.

• Hints! As you perfect puzzles you will earn gold stars, these stars can be spent on hints to help you through the more difficult puzzles.

Argh! Blockees has been rejected for a method name collision with a private API. The method was:

loader:didFailOnError:

Quite a common name I imagine. Anyway, this was part of my MultipartLoader class which it turns out I was not even using in the project. I'd just dragged it in with a bunch of other loaders I used.

Oh well. I'm resubmitting now. Hopefully this wont delay the launch too long...
