What are the pros and cons of jailbreaking?

And can you unjailbreak the ipod back to normal?

Pros:
-Apps that are not on the App Store
-Emulators and Roms
-Themes
-5 icon dock
-5 colunms vertically and horizontally, so that would be 25 apps per page
-Lots of tweaks like SBSettings that lets you do many things, Bosspreffs, hiding apps, turning wifi with only one tap.
-Categories: Folders that you can create to avoid 9 page limit
-Stacks
-Now cydia store is open and you can get other packages.

Cons:
-There isnt all that much. The only thing is if you have to send it for repair you have to restore the ipod so the jailbreak will be gone. Sometimes, if u have lots of things on it, it takes a lot to reboot and something it just freezes but thats like once every month lol

and if you dont like it, you can always hit "RESTORE" on your itunes and the jailbreak will be gone!

There is nothing to think about if you are even remotely skilled in using a PC - jailbreak it!

Underoath pretty much nailed the benefits of jailbreaking. You can even run applications in the background so you can resume at that same exact spot. Useful when you press the home and the app closes out but don't put you exactly where you were. You can even dl youtube videos directly to your device.

A few cons would be that as you dl more things from cydia, your iDevice will run slower. Also, you have a higher risk of seeing the endless apple logo when a install doesn't install correctly or something else funky happens (I think the risk is lower now since newer firmwares are here and increasing performance). If you update to a newer firmware, you have to restore/install new firmware and rejailbreak again and get all your sources/dl's over again. That could be a PITA. Also your battery life will take a hit. Not a huge hit but noticeable.

So, basically install only things you will use so your device doesn't take a major performance hit.

Pros:
Custom Themes
Widgets!
Folders (Categories)
A Better youtube client
Awesome custom games (Osu, for an example :))
5 Icon dock, columns, and rows
Nice little tweaks for iPod users (Taking the "Videos" button from the homescreen on the iPod and just adding it to the "iPod")
Ability to record videos on the iPhone

Cons:
A slight decrease in battery life (very slight)
Nothing else!

I highly recommend jailbreaking. I was skeptical when I first did it, but now I love my iPod more than I ever did before I jailbroke

Nope, it's nearly as EASY imo. (I just hate the long load times of Cydia).

NO, you cannot get any app ever made (I'm assuming you mean the App Store) because that's ILLEGAL! Correct me if I misunderstood :P

Usually (for me, i'm on a Touch 2G) my ipod doesn't crash out of any apps. The only exception is BIA, which doesn't start, but for a different reason. Plus if you're having crashing, you can kill processes using SBsettings or respring using SBsettings. Very useful tool!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you lose all of your game saves when you jb, right?

Maybe once my iPod breaks, I'll go for it. Seems like a nice happy list of benefits! :D

Yes, they are all available there. There is an option to download all the Repositories (Sources) in Cydia which allows you to get Macman (a great form of Pacman), mxTube (youtube) and all the other great games.

I did not lose any of my game saves. Some of my games even resumed right where I had left them (Blocked, for example). I believe some people have lost their game saves, however.

Ultimately, untethered is better. Being tethered means that every time your iPhone or iPod must restart, you have to plug your device into your computer and run a 1-minute program. In untethered, the whole untethering process directly changes the device so you do not need to run the program on your computer and you can restart your device wherever you are. I would definitely go with untethered :)

Let me know if you guys need any more help and/or clarification

Yes, just press the magic restore button in iTunes and it is as if nothing ever happened

And the games you download through Cydia (Macman, Osu, etc.) get updated through Cydia, not the app store.

And yes, if you download games off Cydia, they only work while your iPod is jailbroken. You cannot restore your iPod and keep your Cydia apps

Underoath listed just about every pro other than Backgrounder. You can listen to Pandora while doing something else.
As for cons, Apple says your warranty is voided, even with restore. If you try and restore to hide the jailbreak, you need to fill up all of the memory or there is a chance that traces of the jailbreak will remain (things are not "deleted" only marked to be deleted later when space is needed, so you have to make sure that all of the space is "needed")
Of course you can permanently destroy the device, but that is rare and for the most part voluntary.

You won't lose ANYTHING if you right click on your iPod picture in iTunes and hit 'Backup'.
everything will restore from that exact time except you will have hacked firmware. that's all jailbroken is. you dl latest firmware, then a nice computer application (called QuickFreedom, [with a gui :D]) does the rest for you (with the file that is). Then you put your iPod in DFU mode (not just restore mode, there is a vital difference) and pre-jailbreak it with a button. Then shift-click on restore iPod in iTunes and select the hacked firmware on your desktop, the wait....

BAM. Welcome to Jailbreak.

JB'd my ipod touch, love it.
About my iphone dilemma.
I Have the latest firmware on my iphone. Have to wait on that jailbreak, or I missed a step. regardless my activation failed for the phone part. frustrating.

Piracy is big among those who jailbreak because it is an easy accessible tool. However, I would recommend jailbreaking and if anything goes wrong you can always restore your iDevice to factory settings then sync the backup. It might take like 2 or 3 hours, but it'll bring it back to normal.

Jailbreak it! Although I can't really find any good themes right now, jailbreakin is amazing. You can play all those classic NES games on your iDevice through ROMs and whatnot. Another pro is the fact that you can take videos (YES, video recording) and other great things. Cons are maybe the restoring of the device and Cydia kinda lags but other than that it's wonderful :)

How do you get NES roms on your iDevice? Help is appreciated! Also for some themes I always liked Bluebird, WoodenREALIZE and Crazy Colours.

1. Install the NES emulator.
2. Go to theoldcomputer.com and download ROMs (I'm not sure if that's the website, if it isn't search for it on Google).
3. SSH into your phone using CyberDuck (can be downloaded on apple.com)

I can't remember what files you have to get to to get the ROMs into the phone. Well, for CyberDuck choose the option SSH Protocol and then put in your devices IP address.

Thank you much I will try it I have my fingers crossed because I've seen lots of stuff on youtube but nothing ever worked for me. Maybe because I'm on a 2g?
