id Software has released Wolfenstein-3D for the iPhone, offering a mobile version of their original World War II first-person shooter. The 10 MB download is available on id Software's FTP server (ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/wolf3d/wolf3d_iphone_v1.0_src.zip), and here are the release notes (http://www.bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/articles.pl?show=890), which includes info about the history of this release. There are further details in this included document (http://www.bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/articles.pl?show=891) on iPhone development written by John Carmack with extensive details, concluding saying: "I'm going back to Rage for a while, but I do expect Classic Doom to come fairly soon for the iPhone." Frans, who dug up this scoop, was inspired to momentarily come out of retirement and post a mirror on Gamers.org (ftp://ftp.gamers.org/pub/idgames/idstuff/wolf3d/wolf3d_iphone_v1.0_src.zip).

wow, I played this back in 1996 SO MANY times...brings back memories. The nazi soldiers voices, they would curse (in german) and just the feel of the game.
I hope it will be in the app store soon.

This game will obviously not be available worldwide, at least not in the German store. The game is forbidden in Germany since 1994 because of the use of Nazi symbols. Besides this it's also a FPS with red blood (age 18+) and therefore not allowed to be sold via download.

I think it's great that id is doing this.
I can't get the download page to show up. Is anyone else having that problem? It just tells me that the page can't be found.

Do i have to drag the file into the application page of my itunes?
My phone is NOT jailbroken, will it work nevertheless?

If you read the notes that come with the file, this isn't intended for normal users to play - it's been made available under the GPL as a case study/ready made engine to help other developers in creating their own games.

Why does it say Wolfenstein and has the APP STORE icon next to it on the official page? Apparently there will be a version coming to the app store I hope? It will no doubt be censored when it is.
This version I guess is the full uncensored version. I don't know..

Let's chill out people, that link is the source code for people to maybe improve upon it, or even release their own game.
It's been submitted to the appstore and will be out shortly.

Yeah, I'm sure it'll be there in the next 48 hours but I think ID could have done a better job announcing this. Releasing Wolf3D and the source has caused a LOT of confusion in the community.
Looking forward to Doom though!

This game that was released really IS not for the general public like the person posted before so I am really going to wait for the official release.
Hopefully it will be out in a few days :)
ipa files are zip files (just normal apple obscurification)
just rename the file from zip to ipa, double click - see what happens !
can't try it myself, ftp down (blocked?)

it wont work......... the zip is just the source code! not the final compiled game, just wait for it to appear on the appstore. there will be NO legit way of getting the source to run on your iphone/touch.
true :(
just gone through a proxy server and grabbed it !
it needs to be compiled.......whos got a sdk :)

Guys... don't bother trying to figure out how to install it. The zip file is all the source code, graphics and audio as an xcode project. :) I downloaded it earlier today, had to modify the source in 2 places to even get it to compile... I did play it for about 5 or 10 minutes on my iPhone this afternoon while taking a break!
It needs better controls, If I tried to play a full game on it with the defaults I would go nuts. :D Neat as a test anyway, and they will let you use bits of the engine in your own games so big props to id software and John Carmack
Edit- I just played it again for a few more minutes. Some of the alternate control schemes Carmack came up with are not so bad... you can mix/match accelerometer with on screen directional control. That helps quite a bit. I may just have to play the whole thing now :)

I'm really sorry but it doesn't work that way. When I develop or compile something for testing it's locked to my device with my private dev key. Apple put in those safeguards to prevent anyone from selling or sharing apps outside the store. :)
I can say it'll be worth a download when ID finally releases it. I may try to do a video later to show you all how it works (if I get enough time tonight)!

I keep thinking that two virtual analog sticks (a la Sparta / iDracula) would be perfect for a FPS but then realising how would shooting be accomplished. If the iPhone/iTouch had small triggers on the right hand side so that when you rotated it landscape there were like L1 and R1 on a PS controller it would be an ideal solution.

Yep, and Carmack even shot down the method I was thinking of, having triggers on the top right/left while playing landscape and tapping with the side of your index finger. I recall reading about a game that let you shoot by tapping the back of the iDevice. Why not use that?

Hi Pante,
Wolf3D is in the review process at Apple, it should be available on
the app store as soon as it clears their process.
Thanks -

ID Games for the Iphone/Itouch this is Great news; Castle Wolf 3D was never my favorite but will most likely buy it and for sure will buy Doom.
Was the commander Keen and Heretic/Hexan games theirs too or were they exclusive to 3D realms, Apogee and Raven software?
Any one try it Yet?

keen belongs to apogee, id developed them, but apogee (the publisher) would have to give the okay to release em since technically they are in their library.
