TA Story (http://toucharcade.com/2009/03/25/ea-announces-madden-nfl-ssx-and-more-for-iphone/)

Found here (http://www.**********.com/news/gdc-ea-unloads-on-iphone/): "What does FIFA ,Command & Conquer, Madden NFL, NBA Live, Need For Speed, Tiger Woods, Wolfeinstein and Spore creatures, SSX, Trivial Pursuit and along with a bunch of casual games (see full list here (http://www.iphonegamenetwork.com/gdc-ea-mobile-going-big-with-iphone-announcements)) have in common? The short answer is the iPhone and iPod Touch in 2009.

Today at a press conference at the Game Developers Conference VP of Worldwide Studios Travis Boatman, of EA Mobile spoke about their focus and dedication to providing the best games for the iPhone as possible.

“We have a phenomenal mix of casual and core games coming this year, to the iPhone and iTouch devices”

While some my be skeptical of how a RTS game or sports can be played on the iPhone he responded with:

“We’re taking those challenges head on.”

Also you might want to take a look at Slide to Play's hands on with Trivial Pursuit (http://www.slidetoplay.com/story/gdc-2009-trivial-pursuit-hands-on)

Apparently there is some discrepancy about which games are on the list... still waiting on confirmation from EA.

Yea EA if you are reading this PLEASE DONT USE DLC

gosh..what is it with people and DLC????

DLC is not a bad thing
in fact, it is a great thing
do you really think EAs gonna ship a game with two teams and make you pay 30 bucks for the others?
no there not

so just calm down, take a breather its not going to be as bad as you might think

Almost certainly, these will be coded for the iphone 3 hardware, with some backward compatible compromise for 1st and 2 gen iphone/IPT.

EA and DLC are a given. They could even do the 1 dollar downloads to show you a 'how to' on some things or a dollar for an extra set of clubs/equipment perhaps even a tricked out character.

this is what i think about DLC
I have lost complete faith in the review system. I look at great apps being dissed cause of the price and therefore rating is three. I see horrible apps rates at 5 star cause the devs were bored. I see crappy reviews.

I see reviews that look like they were made when they were drunk. I thought i'd say. I don't trust review system. wobble was rates two stars an it stayed in the top ten forever despite the reviews. Same with iGirl. We have reached a point. Currently there are 1000s of reviews per some apps. Alot bad for no good reason, only see certain ones on device, on computer only see most helpful, only see since last update. The way it's now is kinds like when u have so much content on a blog, there's 100s of pages worth and no one wants to go threw it all.

Let's wait and see on this DLC stuff. I bet it's not going to be like anyone feared. The livefire was an example. Chill and wait for June.

BTW, easy way to get around the DLC. Just don't buy it!!!
This is what it'll be.
Want more rolando levels??
Ok go pay a buck for them
Want a new game mode in sway?
Ok go download them
Want more game play?
Ok go download it

Guys, they won't charge for one level. It won't change a thing other then we get the option for more gameplay. Don't want more levels in rolando??
Don't buy it and be satisfied with the 36
Don't want more game modes in sway?
Don't download

Just say no. You don't have to if u don't want to.
It was a freaking example. Ngmoco isn't gonna charge a dollar for a rocket launcher. Go to the upcoming games forum to meet the dev working on livefire. He explained it all.
Second you won't be getting half baked games. Full games with extras if u want to pay. I'm pumped at the idea of getting more stuff to play with instead of buyin the sequel.
Devs don't have to make updates. They didn't get anything from updated. In fact there will still be updates. But the DLC will bring more content which would have not come before because they couldn't do it for free. That's why devs release sequels. They can't update the first for free with more stuff. They can't cause they don't gain money. If anything this is good for us cause we get the long awaited more game modes in sway. Or more levels in rolando. It's good for the devs. I'm behind it whole heartedly and I AM paying 10 dollars for the 3.0 update come June.

back to the actual topic though, madden, NFV,(no thats not a typo), and NBA live is what im excited about

Big Albie

It is a wait-and-see game (no pun intended), and people have the power to buy or not buy. I may joke about it, but I don't necessarily see it as a bad thing at all. In many ways, it levels the playing field for devs which I think is sorely needed.

Gamingfun
03-24-2009, 01:49 PM
For sure just don't buy it but still doesn't mean we won't complain about it ;) besides judging from EA's response to DLC on the consoles doesn't give me full confidence it'll be "worthy" extras. I'm sure they'll have 1 or 2 dlc that'll be sweet but I'm thinking they'll mainly be in the lines of micro-transactions.

The Game Reaper
03-24-2009, 01:53 PM
Erm... you know you don't HAVE to pay for DLC. You can still just play the game.
Some of you are going on about it as if it was compulsary!

Well think about this:

You see Simcity 3000 in the App store and you buy it (assuming it has no DLC) but you oprn it up and to even get a good piece out of it youi have to pay money for DLC. Me I rather buy a game in full (by that I mean has the full game in it no DLC what so ever) without no DLC.

Hmm yes not including parts of games which should have been there in the first place is certainly an issue... Not what apple intended though.

iPhone 3 hardware?

Let's get this straight:

Apple hasn't announced anything, and rumors to the contrary aside they most likely will not release a major hardware revision in the coming year. It will be a MINOR revision at most. So, no new GPU, no new CPU, no increase in RAM.

And so these games, contrary to what you may think, will be coded for the existing hardware, as the existing hardware has proved more than capable of running games of this sort.

I honestly don't understand why you'd think otherwise.

I put this new iPhone hardware nonsense rumor in a higher echelon of silliness than even the premium price section nonsense that still rears its head around here from time to time even though it has mostly been shown, time and time again, to be nothing more than a RUMOR with no basis in FACT.

They almost HAVE to release a new iPhone model to keep consumer interest up. If they don't update the line for a full two years it will be easily surpassed and sales will drop. People are ADD with cellphones these days.
That said, I doubt it will be a major revision, just a bumping of specs and maybe a slight change to the form factor. Maybe they will introduce colors or something.

These games sound great. I am especially looking forward to SSX, C&C, and Madden. They better do a good job on them.

To the above posters discussing iPhone 3.0:

I believe the concern is that the new microtransaction system coming with 3.0 will be greatly abused by EA by charging for every little DLC.

However, I was too lazy to read through the rest of the forum so I may be mistaken about that subject.

But when are they releasing this? NFS alone has been delayed for 6 months. I guess we're getting FIFA 2012??

I'm so stoked to think that a solid version of SSX could arrive on the iPhone. I can't wait to hear more news about it

salsamd
03-24-2009, 07:19 PM
That's what I was getting at. Minor revision, sure. Maybe even that mythical iPhone Nano. Who knows?

But I sincerely doubt they'd release a major hardware revision. Not this soon. Next two years, yeah...but now? We have to keep in mind that the App Store for the current devices has only been open for a year. It's still got a bit of life in it, to say the least.

Tenacity. :D

You hold quite a fervently dogmatic view about the probability/lack thereof for a major hardware upgrade. Time alone will tell. I prefer to entertain the possibilities until there is adequate information to hold allegiance to any side. And, Apple's trajectory may be far ahead of where we focus. Thus, a major update for consumers may not be such a large bump in their more long-term game plan. The hardware components are out there/will be soon, and the potential to embrace another echelon of gaming harkens at the door. In a few months time, we will know better whether Apple chooses to bite...

This is great news for the future of iDevice gaming! Now that EA has stepped up to the plate, I foresee many more big developers making games. All we need is a nice hardware upgrade so these games are actually possible. I'm a little nervous that if games like Let's Golf and Aqua Moto Racing are the limit of the current iDevices, then the graphics in Need for Speed and SSX would need to be greatly simplified to fit the platform. These rumors of multi-core processors and a premium game section seem more legit every day...

Why does the story on the front page of TA regarding this announcement regard the reports as discrepant? IGN, STP, and iPGN are all reporting the same thing. In fact, iPGN has a live-blog post up of the actual event:

I got a different list from EA. And I asked Craig, he said he wasn't sure about SSX and would have to check. IGN mentions SSX but their "full list" doesn't include it. http://wireless.ign.com/articles/965/965675p1.html

Like I said, I think the list is right (including SSX), but there was some confusion from my side. Unfortunately I wasn't at the event.

I've been dyeing for a good SSX game since SSX 3! On Tour was a decent game to kill the time, Blur was a complete disaster (even if I played all the way though it, and learned to do the insanely hard uber-tricks, just waiting for a new SSX GAME!)

If this is true, then I'm going to make sure that I don't buy anything for a while (except Star Defense and Livefire)... I think that the DS is a good predictor of what they can do on the iPhone. The only drawback may be the controls. Some of these seem impossible without a real controller. Also, does anybody think that the friction in Tiger Woods is way too high? Maybe it's just me but it seems like the ball hits the ground and stops almost immediately.

dalurkersteve

I think that the DS is a good predictor of what they can do on the iPhone.

the DS doesnt have the graphical or computational capabilities of the iphone... the only similarity would be the controls and since the iphone is only touch the controls would have to be changed as well. The iphone has processing capabilities nearer to the PSP than the DS
