I could play that game for hours, or until the quarters ran out.
I'd love to see it again...on my iPhone!:p
What about Star Castle? Anything like that out?

I could too, but up/down, reverse/thrust, shoot, smart bomb, hyperspace and a level of control to grab the humans.. That's a lot of touch space.

Yeah, it's called Repton.
Grafx look cheesy but it seems to have gotten good reviews (even tho some look fake).
i would love a Star Castle game. I've been hoping for that and Omega Race. Long live 1980...

I used to have Defender the arcade unit in my house for about 6 months. My dad knew dude who ran Del Mar Surf and Turf so he loaned it to me. So anyway I had the key to tweak all the settings to the game and credits and what not...this is in 1983 (I think). Used to play for hours on end with friends coming over and what not. So finally he comes to pick up Defender and I couldn't remember where I put the the damn key (did find it the next day though but too late). Long story short had to call a locksmith and my birthday money went to pay for locksmith...since then I hate Defender just brings back bad memories cuz it ruined my birthday!

Apologies for the self promotion... I loved Defender as a kid and played it endlessly on the BBC Micro under the guise of Planetoid... so I've written something as close to the original as I could including most of the in-game sounds. Hyperspace and bombs are there too.
I'll try and get a youtube video of it but here are some screenshots:

The game is called 'Planet Defence', hope you enjoy it!

For those wishing to try out my version there is a free/lite version of planet defence: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=314581750&mt=8
I am in the process of releasing an update which will see a closer-to-orginal style graphics, ship movement, enemy movement and shooting, plus there is an online highscore table.

Just want to let you know that in America, "defence" is spelled "defense." I'm assuming that you're British or Canadian so if it's possible, you should change the name in the US store to get more sales.

That doesn't include apps promoted by developers/publishers/people directly involved with it. Just other websites, blogs, YouTube (and related) channels, etc. that could be considered to be in competition with tA or may not be entirely germane to the topics at hand here.
You can post self-promoting links of that nature in your sig (within reason) though, but apps and such, they're perfectly welcome here. If they weren't, this place wouldn't be nearly as lively as it is. And of course, you'd get no developer's posting promo codes... ;)

Not very many people even know what star castle is any more, it was one of the games I played all the time.

WoooHooo - Planet Defence, bought it this morning and it is *excellent*. I prefer playing it in 'tilt' mode as it keeps the playing area clear. Top marks to the developer :)

Planet Defenc/se looks great! I'll grab that one tonight for sure.
I've also got a Defenderish app in the store, but more along the lines of the old Choplifter game. Here's the game's website... check it out if you like: http://www.saucelifter.com

Great to see these arcade classics coming to the iPhone. Now, if Mr. Madgarden or Mr. Faulconbridgesoftware can pleeeze develop a game which very, very closely resembles ;) my favorite arcade classic--Cosmic Avenger--my life would be complete! :)

How is "defense" pronounced anyway... "defenze?" Is that anything like "ExtenZe?" ;)

For those hankering after more retro style graphics please check out the update (1.1): http://www.faulconbridgesoftware.com.au/images/noborder/retro.jpg
Online scoreboard has been added - all your existing scores will be submitted automatically (if you activate the online scoring option).
On the defence/defense conversation, yeah, for US appeal I should have chosen the 'defense' spelling, apparently it has greater antiquity too, but it was fairly well engrained into me to spell it with a 'c'. I hope all 's' lovers out there will forgive me :)
gekkota, on your note about Cosmic Avenger/Scramble/Rocket Raid, yep, this had been on the books to write but maybe not just yet. Maybe madgarden will do the honours?

Hi folks, apologies for a bit of self promotion, but I've just released Defender for the iPhone, and Scramble has been out for a few months now - they're both getting good reviews! Here are some promo codes -
Scramble :
NJ9TR6L3XFTJ
63F4NMRFWEPL
TLE4X36LKH6W
PWMKN94JKTLF
77JH97366HW6
A7K6634YA6JM
HER9MFMAXMXK
XM9P7HT336JF
NTEH7LNRP7H6
4F6KPM6YLHER
Defender:
RNH4EFANLR9W
M3N46PMPWFAN
F6PRRHFF7PE7
YEAERYAY7TJ6
46MMFWT3HMTA
LWJ3FWJ3A4TA
KW3JT64E697N
XYJ3R7EMFX4E
ALJLTX776JPE
3LPYR9W67H7N
A new version of Defender is coming soon, with totally customisable controls, not sure if these codes will continue to work with the new version, but if you get it quick it should update as normal. Just look for "Scramble!" and "Defender!" in the app store. Also, any suggestions for other old arcade games for me to code would be cool.

I just bought Planet Defense -- thanks for the developer for posting. I also own Viper and, with apologies, I think it's better. On Viper, can calibrate the sensitivity of the ship and I think the graphics are more polished. I particularly like the fact that the main shooting button is simply touching the screen, not a specific area. I felt Planet Defense was a little cramped. Still, I appreciate the developer for posting and hope for improved versions. It's always great to have a choice.
