Drag Racer 4 : Perfect Run

Not sure how many have played it, but "Drag Racer" was an incredibly popular flash racing game a few years ago. I developed it, and since about January 2009 I've started developing a new version of it for the iPhone with touch controls, easier interfaces and a much more polished engine.

The game is pretty massive already and we're planning for a late April release with full customization of about 25 cars, a big tournament structure, tons of challenges and in the future an online mode where players can connect to each other and race/trade their cars (we're planning this to happen with the release of the 3.0 SDK so we can take advantage of Bluetooth connectivity).

Definetly a 350Z0-like car, we're trying to bring all the cars back, just changing up back lights or slight mods to the car to keep it legal.

Thanks for the feedback! we're definetly trying to keep it slow and polished. We don't want to post and then watch it plummet into the void that is the appstore right now. There's alot of other racing games on there and we want to differentiate from them as much as we can (since it really isn't a typical racing game at all).

If anyone has any suggestions on how to do this it would be much appreciated. We're putting alot of time into usability and interface design so that people can get excited about the game just by looking at the pictures in the app store. Other then that we're looking into pricing strategies that will differentiate us from the other big racing apps like pink slips and need for speed. And, of course, we're working on making sure the core game is the same as the original drag racer that everyone got addicted to so easily. Let me know if you have any suggestions! Thanks.

I think a wifi online would be awesome, and also a local multiplayer so you can play against your friends close by. And for the manual option if you could shift it with your fingers sort of like using the mouse in the flash version would be cool.

second: no one talks about full 3d and ultra realistic lightning here. but one can certainly ask for a game with a little bit polished 2d graphics. this looks like its drawn together with adobe illustrator and thats not necessarily a good thing. especially in the customization screen there is certainly more work needed.

Yea but if they had not registered with apple yet, then they couldn't of gotten the sdk early. They were waiting so when the official sdk came out, they could work on it.

They registered with apple back in febuary when they 1st started the game and 3.0 sdk came out way back in febuary or march

And you can't make game with anything u need the sdk

they got given a BETA version.....there was probly still some things wrong with the BETA version of the 3.0, then when the final version came out they tested it and found it was buggy so now they will fix it for the final version. not the BETA.

haha, sorry what actually happened is that I went away to Europe to travel for about 2 months. I expected to have it done before I left, but It didn't happen. The game is back on track and will be released sometime this month. Sorry for keeping you all waiting, don't worry it will be released! And I'm really working on the polish now with the interface and the concept. Keeping things built for the iphone and keeping it simple. I'll be posting up the new concept pics in the next week so everyone can really start getting into it. Again... I apologize for making you wait for all this, especially since I said April but Europe was an opportunity I wasn't about to miss out on and I love to travel.

sorry about the delays, but they are necessary. The main issue is that I'm now the sole developer on the project so things that normally can be completely in parallel are getting spread apart.

The game is complete now, its just in testing. I expect to give it off to apple within the next week. Sorry again for the constant "it's coming out soon" but that's the way its always felt. It doesn't help that I'm constantly traveling this summer so its hard to find time to work on this.

For the vouchers, I'm going to be giving away the vouchers to the reviewers as a first priority (for obvious reasons) and then on a first come first serve basis. I'm not sure how many actual vouchers I'll have but my PM box is already overflowing so It will on depend on that. I'll do my best to get back to everyone and get as many vouchers as I can. What's taking so long is that Apple has not kept up with their own success with the App store. If you read Apples reply to the FCC regarding the denial of the Google voice app they give some details about how the review process works.

There are 40 full time reviewers and a handful of others reviewers (higher ups, etc), each app is reviewed by two people using actual idevices (not just simulators on their computers). Apple receives 8,500 new apps/updates that are submitted for review each week. Now if you do the math that doesn't equal really fast app turn around time. The sad part is that it seems like only a few months ago it took 3 days turn-around time, then it was 5 days and everyone threw a fit that it was taking so long. About two weeks ago it was around 14 days if I recall to get helirescue out based on the developers posts. That is where I got my answer for how long it would take a few posts back. What's taking so long is that Apple has not kept up with their own success with the App store. If you read Apples reply to the FCC regarding the denial of the Google voice app they give some details about how the review process works.

There are 40 full time reviewers and a handful of others reviewers (higher ups, etc), each app is reviewed by two people using actual idevices (not just simulators on their computers). Apple receives 8,500 new apps/updates that are submitted for review each week. Now if you do the math that doesn't equal really fast app turn around time. The sad part is that it seems like only a few months ago it took 3 days turn-around time, then it was 5 days and everyone threw a fit that it was taking so long. About two weeks ago it was around 14 days if I recall to get helirescue out based on the developers posts. That is where I got my answer for how long it would take a few posts back. They don't actually play through the entire game, but they do have to make sure all the little facets of the game are in working order.

I'm worried about apple feeling like all the cars are trademark infringement to the car companies. That almost has to be it. If it didn't get kicked back then it's probably waiting in line for a review by some higher ups.

Well it just came out Friday I think, and he said he was waiting for 4 weeks. So since he got a one week head start on adam expect to add on at least 3 extra days, so it will probably be 4 and a half weeks from the submission date before drag racer would come out. I think we're still about 9 or 10 days out.

i know you can select custom ones! but im meaning instead of the original custom, make your own custom rims, you start of with a normal rim and you have different tools to make different looks on the rim :) so forth with the body kit

In the meantime, until Apple actually figures this thing out we're setting up a website to allow everyone who's into the game to chat, post up pics, times, etc. We're working on directly connecting the game to the website now, but it won't be ready in for the initial release (unless we want to wait another... 3 weeks? blah.) The site is http://www.drperfectrun.com, its not setup quite yet.

I'm starting to work on some more iPhone games now while I wait, i'll keep you all posted.

Mini review:

I think it's safe to say that Drag Racer: Perfect Run leaves every other App Store drag game in it's dust. It wasn't a very populated genre in the first place, but DR:PR sets the bar high out of reach. Anyone who's played the flash game will instantly feel at home here, the interface and general setup have changed slightly, but definitely for the better. Personally I was always a little lost trying to navigate the menus on Drag Racer 3, but Perfect Run's menus are clear, simple and easily the best-looking of the series to date. The cars (as usual) are all lovingly detailed and offer a good amount of both performance and cosmetic upgrades.

As far as general improvements go, there are a couple of small things I'd like to see in an update. I'd like the name of the car to be displayed on it's stats screen, at the moment when I'm browsing my garage it seems the only way to tell which car I'm looking at is to get in it. It's not a huge detail but it would make switching between cars that little bit easier.

Secondly, I'm not too fond of the background during a race. It seems slightly strange to have photorealistic scenery when the rest of the game is all done with vector graphics. I think it would also help with the sense of speed if it were drawn instead, as when you reached a certain speed it could switch to a slightly more blurred version of the background rather than just trying to scroll it faster. It's probably an iPhone limitation that prevents it from really looking as fast as it could, so some visual tricks could be used in order to make it look more convincing.

Lastly, the gear stick. It's perhaps the biggest change when moving to the iPhone game from the flash games, and it may divide some players. Personally I think it works pretty well and it's definitely more fun than using arrow keys, but a couple of times while racing I've had problems getting it to go where I want to. I'm not suggesting a complete change, but it'd be nice if the devs could mess with it a bit to see if they can make it slightly more forgiving. Maybe even an option where you don't have to touch the stick itself, but can just trace the correct shape anywhere on the screen (other than the pedal obviously) to change gears? I've got small fingers but I'm thinking other people might not be so lucky in that respect and it'd help them out a lot.

Overall it's a solid game, anyone who's enjoyed the previous games should have no complaints, and anyone who hasn't but has even the slightest interest in drag racing should definitely give it a try. I seem to have written mostly about improvements here, but even so they are only minor annoyances and fixing them would definitely add to the polish of the game. This is actually the first game in the series I've played for more than a few minutes, and already I'm feeling the addiction, it's very much a "just one more race..." kind of game.

that happened to me i went to bed and then woke up pretty late and didn't want to check this tread cause i thought it still might not be out so i didn't. A couple hours later i went to touch arcade and a window popped up from AdamTelfer and i was like what the hell so i clicked view now an it it said "they just approved the game. I'm trying to look for it in the app store now" so i opened itunes and closed all the tabs i had on safari and it froze safari. i couldn't force quit it or even minimize so i was stuck for like for like 10 min trying to get to itunes up so i could look for it. anyways its out and its only a matter of time until i can play it:)

Played the game for about two seconds. It seems to be very in depth just like the flash game was. There are a few critique items I have for Adam but want to play more before I give an in-depth review. I can tell you that it is as fun as the flash game was and works nicely on any idevice. The one thing that's going to be hit or miss for a lot of people is the shifting mechanism. Not because it isn't a good idea or implemented well... but just the limitations of the device. I've always felt that the phone touchscreen is nice but only about 90-95 percent accurate... Not bad, but nowhere near perfect. That being said, the device has missed a few of my shifts I have made in my early races. I would suggest to Adam to implement an option to have paddle shifters instead of the 6 speed shifter. Maybe he could even make it an upgrade for the cars that you have to pay for. It's definitely a real thing in many high end cars and something you can actually upgrade to in other cars so at least that way wouldn't take away from the realism. My one other early thing is to show a little finish line marker when you're in the race so you know how far away you are instead of just coming to the end automatically.

Great job on the game Adam it is wonderful, yet there are a few issues. I am on my iphone an inept at typing on it so I will just list the one that is my biggest pet peave. The quarter mile times/ 400 meter times and the top spee or off..... A lot.i had a 13 sec time at 64 mph, the flash game was more accurate in this matter. Regardless this is my new fav game.
