GDC '09: Hands on with Dirt Moto Racing on iPhone
First look at the landlocked follow up to Aqua Moto Racing

Racing games are a dime a dozen on iPhone, yet most soil the experience with poorly tuned controls and underwhelming design. Dirt Moto Racing, which we played during the Game Developers Conference last week, promises to leave those racers in the dust.

Building on the phenomenal mechanics of Aqua Moto Racing, this off-road speed fest is set to make a splash later this year.

Driving is a matter of tilting the handset left and right to steer, as well as touching the screen to accelerate. Options allow you to toggle automatic acceleration, although power-sliding can only be done through manual adjustment. Jerking the device up instigates a jump, which is important for pulling off tricks.

It all feels spot on, even at this early stage. Dirt Moto Racing clearly inherits the best qualities of its predecessor and modifies them for landlocked racing.

Our hands on with the game involved zipping across the packed sand and rocky outcroppings of the Dunes. Rolling hills of yellow dirt provide a playground for dirt bikes and ATVs, with big air caught on the highest of the hills.

Weaving between the mounds is a wide path rubbed raw from previous races, nudging you in the general direction of the race. Here the course is marked by loose edges, while others are more confined.

A total of four tracks are planned for the release, including a motocross Stadium and Forest level. As expected, navigating the Forest involves a bumpy ride beneath a canopy of thick tree cover.

The course is far narrower than in the Dunes, as it also is in Stadium. Unlike racing through the Forest, though, expect hairpin turns and steep manufactured ramps when competing in the Stadium.

All four tracks are featured in Championship play, the goal of which is to win half a dozen competitive cups of increasing difficulty. These races, as well as reverse tracks, can be played at any time via Quick Race mode.

New in Dirt Moto Racing will be stunt parks modelled after each of the four environments. This trick-only mode has you pulling off stunts for points, letting you mess around with a bike or ATV. Naturally, the range of tricks is being expanded with an overhauled system that has you drawing symbols on the screen with your finger.

Online rankings are planned, but multiplayer hasn't been confirmed. At the very least some form of local wireless multiplayer - whether requiring a router or Bluetooth (should the game release after the next firmware update) - would be a boon to its value.

Network multiplayer is unlikely given the game's scheduled release. Dirt Moto Racing will arrive on the App Store within the next few months, leaving little time to focus on anything other than finishing the core game. Considering the already solid feel of the controls, the engine is already revving up on this promising off-road racer.

If the controls are as good as Aqua Moto, Dirt Moto will be a winner! Aqua Moto has some of the best controls you can find in the racing genre, and my guess is that Dirt Moto will handle just as well if not better.

You should try Aqua Moto lite to get a feel for the controls. They are really very good. AM lite won't give you a good idea of the gameplay, however, since it only includes the easy mode which doesn't do the full version justice.

4 tracks? That's it? Sorry, got to pass already...that's not nearly enough.

Not sure how those 4 tracks are going to work out, but if it's half as good as Aqua Moto I'll be sure to get it. I'm so glad I decided to get AM, because the lite wasn't really convincing. (Albie far more! ;) ). Can't wait for some screen shots on this one.

There are also reverse tracks and a trick park.

I have always seen reverse tracks as a copout. Seriously, just make 4 more tracks instead of reversing them.

looks very good -- this may be the first racer i buy for ipod touch (unless LRS or snail mail count).

I'll buy it if the controls are as good as Aqua Moto. The controls don't have to be the exact same, just as good as.

Not four tracks, four environments. It is just like aqua moto racer. Here is a good comparison, let's golf has four golf courses, but has 64 holes. This racer will probably have 20 or more tracks! that is good enough for me (until I beat it all)

Can't wait! I never liked watersports games, but this sounds cool. Also, what does LRS mean?

Really can't believe the audacity of this developer. Aqua Moto is an unfinished product, IMO. I bought the game and it's a good product, but what about custom music and a few more tracks. These guys are like Gameloft: release a game, forget about it, then release something else, ad nauseum. Besides that, 2XL Supercross promises 12 bikes and 12 tracks. Tired of buying these damn tech demos.

I don't know what your expectations are, but Aqua Moto has 18 tracks and also a reverse mode which doubles it to 36 tracks so I'm not sure how this an unfinished product. That's not a tech demo.

Was there an update I missed? This game has 4 tracks. It has different parts of the environment, but it all looks the same. 36 tracks, my patoot. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the app, but Crash Nitro had more true tracks and that was a launch app.

If you think it's unfinished, don't buy it. There is nothing misleading about there being 36 tracks across 3 environments both in our review and on the description in iTunes.

I purchased this app. It's one of the apps I keep on my phone. But I'm not satisfied with the lack of updates. Doesn't matter what the description says; I know what I have played. The game has four base tracks. Each of those tracks are then divided up into a couple of areas of said track. All of these areas look the same. The placement of buoys and and jump markers are different, but the areas all look the same.

I know you guys like the app; I do, as well, but it's not all it could be. Fin.

What updates does it need? Are there bugs they need to fix or do you think $3.99 buys you some kind of unlimited content subscription that the developers need to constantly be pushing out for free?

I give up. Everyone wins. I love everybody. I just had a dream TouchArcade banned me. I concede. Aqua Moto is the greatest app ever. Fin.

Finally, you're seeing reason russiaone!:p

I can see where you're coming from, but you can't expect everyone to agree with you even if some may. To me, the racing is happening on the water, and that's the same on every track (we could discus shades of green, blue, brown, what have you, but in essence it is a big flat smooth wide stretch of H2O). The rest is just eye candy and does nothing to improve gameplay. Some variety is nice, and the 4 environments provide enough of it for me. But something like 12 or 20 different landscapes would just make the app very big, make it more costly because of the time spent on them, and change nothing to the racing bit. It's not like you'd have mountains, towns, countryside, snow, ice, etc like in a road racing game. Water, buoys, opponents, a ramp here and there, and bring it on! Best racer IMO, even after buying fastlane and pink slip this week.

This is on my list, and hopefully includes a career mode. I'm already a big fan of Aqua Moto so I expect this will be just as good if not better in terms of the mechanics.

It seems as though 2XL's Supercross racing is gonna have some competition.
The controls for Aqua moto racing were amazing and so were the graphics. So long as Dirt Moto Racing can offer better graphics, more tricks, and diffrent bikes, it will be the best Dirt biking game for the iphone.
