What music apps do you guys use?
I've been getting a lot of use out of Pianist and Beatmaker. Every music should have those two.

I also have using ITM Matrix and ITM Midilab along with Logic.
Cleartune has been a great tuner for me.

I recently downloaded Synthpond and it's pretty interesting. It's mostly meant to just play around with, but it has some serious functionality as well.

I cannot stop using Drum Kit lol

I like Guitarist for the whammy bar/tremolo... The wah is pretty cool, but it's too unresponsive

BeatMaker is great. It was the first app I got, the only one I'd happily pay $20 for (okay, except for OmniFocus, but that's a productivity thing). I just got Noise.io, but I haven't messed with it yet.

The two that I use the most (other than BeatMaker) are PaklSound (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=287933357&mt=8) (think TenoriOn), and BtBx (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=287398151&mt=8), which is like ReBirth for the iPhone (and, thus, awesome!).

I should mention, these are both primarily for messing with music/sounds, not for creating a song.

When it gets a little cheaper, I'll probably grab Bloom (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=292792586&mt=8), but that's really just for playing with sounds, not a *true* musicians' app.

I'm tempted to get noise.io, but I'm not sure I'll use it. I'm not much for synth sounds, though I haven't messed with synths a lot. I might get it; I'm still debating. Let me know what you think about it.

I'm an avid user of BeatMaker, and just recently purchased Noise.io. So far it is the best synth I've tried and can definitely get some creative juices flowing if nothing else. If it were cross-compatible to BeatMaker, it would be a dream-team duo of must-have apps for budding musicians, or whatever you may call yourself. I recommend it.

I use pocketguitar for those 2 minute guitar sessions, and i also have Guitar Toolkit. Its great for a quick and easy tuner that works very well. It also has a great chord library that you can strum to see if you are it playing right. Those two recommended for any guitarist.

i bought pocket guitar when i first got my ipod touch and i hated it. i realized it's more of a toy than something that can be put to good use. i don't mess with beat makers, synths, band, or any other kind of instrument simulation app.

instead, i use karajan to work on my musicianship and theory. it covers a good amount of areas such as pitch, intervals, even tempo. i use karajan more than any other app i've bought.

karajan ftw!

There's apparently a rumor going around that noise.io is currently attempting to get their app to export directly to Beatpack (if you use Beatmaker you know what that is). I think that might be as good as we can expect to get, but it'd still be awesome.

I'm really considering Noise.io now. I've never been into synths, but I'm pretty impressed with it so far.

The creators of Noise.io are currently negotiating with Intua to allow that functionality! I love Noise.io and Beatmaker! They are sweet for composing and I can'twait untill they implement record functionality too.

Found this in Noise.io's forum. It's from the devs. He's talking about exporting directly Beatmaker:

"We (the Amidio team) are ready to provide such a functionality.

We've been contacting Intua sice August and finally came to a decision that this could be implemented.

It will most probably be done when we get a kind of API from Intua.

QUOTE FROM INTUA: ...we are working into ways to exchange data between the two programs via a new version of BeatPack, we will get into more details once we are set on our part.

If something won't work out, we will implement WAV export to our own server (could be several variants of that, will run a public poll then)

We just do not want to end up with users having tons of servers for different apps."

-----------------------------------------------

I'm officially getting noise.io now. That's amazing. I ever thought of using the iPhone for music creation when got it. This is goes way beyond my expectations.

If someone would make a music scoring app I'd be thrilled. I think the iPhone would be a perfect platform for it. It could even export to MIDI, like Beatmaker does.

That's one app I've been keeping my eyes open for, but so far there hasn't even been a rumor of it. Any devs out there listening to this?

We haven't really kept much noise about this since there's still loads of work ahead of us. But there is a musical toy thing called 'Cinnamon Beats' coming up that we're working on.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x03nQs_Y1cU&fmt=18

I admit, it's a freaky way of making music, but it does work. We're going after a fun factor, emergent rhythms and discovery of music through playing around.
Official announcements and the like are still quite ways off.

Any feedback is absolutely welcome, if you can make much sense of what's happening in the video.

I picked up Synthpond (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=294263415&mt=8). Kind of odd (in a good way), but having seen lots of videos of Bloom, I think this is a little more user-oriented (less random, more control over composition).

Version 2.0 is coming out soon, and there's some nice generative features added: http://apps.stfj.net/synthPond/ Definitely worth the $2.

I've been using noise.io a lot today and I'm very impressed.

It's a full fledged synth for $9.99! What?!

It's better than most music programs and plugins I've tried for my Mac. It's the real thing. It's not a toned down music toy.

I just thought I'd mention that. I'm still a little stunned.

I totally concur with NotYou above. Noise.io is better featured than all the synths I have used.

That was exactly the reaction I had when I started using Noise.io (I tend to buy up all the music apps if they seem even half-decent), so I had to say something when you brought it up. Can't wait for the possibility to make a full song with Noise.io and Beatmaker, let's start a revolution here. (NoiseMaker?!?!)

Beatmeaker is awesome, picked that up as soon as it came out. Yet to pick up Noise.io neat, but will do soon. Cosmovox is quite interesting and a great use of tilting the device to play :) I was a bit dissapointed with Thereminator (Cosmovox does that whole thing better.)

Bloom is also fun and right up my street although not really a musician's toy.

a bit of a followup to my previous post

After seeing so much mention of Noise.io on here I bought it too. wow, minisynth is a fun toy but Noise.io is awesome.

Admittedly It took me minutes to play with every aspect of miniSynth and it will be weeks before I consider myself proficient with Noise.io (I'm no musician and I never use hardware or software synths) but its going to be a lot of fun trying.

Noise.io sounds really interesting... I thought about downloading it recently but held off... all the reviews are pushing me over the edge.

The neatest instrument app I've seen is Ocarina. It really feels like an analog instrument... of course, they don't use samples... you blow into the mic and that, along with fingering generates the tone...

Fun video of it here: Ocarina Demo (http://www.vimeo.com/2131612)

Guitar Toolkit was one of the first Apps I bought for the iPhone and is still one I use most often. Over the years, I've spent a lot of money on metronomes and tuners, but still never seemed to have them with me when I wanted them! I play a lot of guitar and I use guitar toolkit almost every day and it's always been solid and reliable for me.

There's a new update for Synthpond. It seems to revamp the whole program. Even the graphics and notes are updated.

Now you can assign whole sequences to one node. This is actually shaping up to be a pretty useful app.

Thanks for the heads up! I'm soo looking forward to the new features!

(more soon, after I play/not sleep...)

Edit: Ok, I've played (not slept) and it's freakin' AWESOME! Zach added some amazing features in the update, like orbiting, note sequences (ask NotYou), and the ability to change bpm, decay, etc.

This is now my favourite music app, because you can make pretty straight-forward melodies *and* really great, random, generative music (which makes my knees weak. Really).

Guitar (or bass) players should have a look at Guitar Toolkit. I think it's a very useful app, especially if you're learning chords and scales.

Hey rc90,
I'm a self-taught guitarist considering getting the Guitar Toolkit. My fundamentals could use some work, so I was thinking this application could help me learn new chords and scales. Could you specify (the website and application description don't really help that much) how this application would help me go about this?

I am a guitarist and I use: school of rock is very good for memorizing chords and notes, I also use guitar 4 you it's a very crude app but it has all chords and scale patterns.

"Only time will tell if we are about to see a trend for iPhone and iPod touch based music rather than simply listening to music on the go. As trends go The Mentalists have set a high standard, and future live performances could prove spontaneous events, assuming you've remembered to bring your iPhone or iPod touch."

The Mentalists play Kids by MGMT on their iPhones and iPod Touches, using only apps downloaded from the Apple App Store. Apps used Ocarina, Retro Synth, miniSynth, DigiDrummer Lite.

+1 for RandGrid from here, too! I've invited RandGrid and Bebot devs to make an appearance here as both apps have been favorably mentioned on TA threads, but I guess we have too low traffic here to make any real difference on sales and PR :(
(edit: don't take it wrong - both devs have been really friendly and informative in their correspondence, so I guess they have not appeared here only due to lack of time and maybe of audience).

My list of
- great: BeatMaker, Noise.io, SynthPond, Bebot, BtBx, RandGrid, iDrum
- ok: Minisynth, Guitarist, Pocket Guitar, Orthovox, Android, Minipiano, Aura
- no use for me: Band, Cosmovox, Bloom, Paklsound, Digidrummer

(have probably forgotten many, will edit later)

Haven't tried iShred yet, looks like it could be great. I'm a bit wary of guitar emulators, the sound is quite impossible to get right. Various chord apps have been more useful for my real guitar play.

I'm in no way a real or even amateur musician, but have been doodling around with various hardware synths and dozens of softsynths for over 20 years. Now, having all these great iPhone apps has made my non-mobile "studio" collect dust!

Sami

Ps. The limitation on how many apps an idevice can hold is really annoying! I want to keep all my music, photo, drawing, language study & PDA apps on my phone, along with those many, many excellent games. How am I supposed to do that without jailbreaking... AARRGH! Sorry but this is my pet peeve!

Well, I'm not going to blow into my phone unless Apple adds a spit valve to it first ;)

No, I know Ocarina was a success and blowing can be an expressive control, but still won't do it without a mouthpiece.

Does noise.io support recording from the mic to then play around with the sample? I've been playing around with beatmaker and noise.io and loving them, but this is a feature that would be incredible. I know beatmaker lets you record a sample, but I want to process and distort etc my recorded samples.

Nope. Noise.io is a synth, not a sampler or even sample player. All sounds are created from scratch by FM synthesis.

There are some limited samplers like Voice Keyboard for example, but the phone mic is really not good enough for quality sampling. I guess it is possible to connect an external mic to headphone jack with a suitable adapter (3xRCA) but haven't tried it.

I just started using Beatmaker, so I'm not totally sure this is possible, but what if you created the first part of the track with the 16 pads that you have, export it, then import it as an individual sample and overdub it with the 15 leftover pads?

I finally bit the bullet and bought Noise.io after being tempted for ages.

I'm no synth virtuoso, in fact I have very little idea what I'm doing, but what an awesome program. Before this the only music program I bought was iDrum Ministry of Sound Anthems edition, which is still fun and something I reccomend to any fan of electronic music, but Noise.io is absolutely insane.

Maybe next I'll actually be able to bring myself to buy Beatmaker...

Also the 1.2 update just came out for Chordica which should make this app more appealing.

I have been playing around with that and Star Piano recently. I'm not sure about Chordica yet.

Chordica uses a "scoreless music method" which I think was invented by the developer of this app who has several tutorials on youtube. It's a way to teach music without letters representing chords or notes. I've plugged my iPhone into Garageband and made some loops to export as WAVS and then into Beatmaker. It's OK but I'm looking forward to this 1.2 update ... I think it will be more useful now.

I'll post later today on my attempts to understand Jasuto.

Are you guys aware of Paklsound1?

There hasn't been hype over it lately because it's been in the app store for a long time. It's supposed to be pretty good, though. It has a lot of features for one of these. It has sharps and flats, which I'm pretty sure the others don't.

I'm not trying to discourage anyone from buying the others, I just wanted make you guys aware it's there.

So far these serious music apps I definitely recommend:
Noise.io
Beatmaker
iDrum
Randgrid
Star Piano/Guitar (They might not have the novelty of other guitar and piano apps, but are much easier for actually playing decent things plus Beatmaker compatibility)
Jasuto

Looks like iDrum has 4 editions ... Hip Hop, Club, Ministry of Sound Anthems and Rock. Which do you recommend?

Btw ... I have all the others except Randgrid ... not too sure about it (can you convince me). Even Jasuto .... wow ... quite a learning curve on that one.

Personally I use Ministry of Sound Anthems, because I like to play around with house beats. It depends on personal preferences really, it depends what type of samples you think you can get the most out of.

Randgrid is a bit overpriced, it's no Noise.io but it seems to be the most powerful of the oldschooled, analog style synths for the iPod. I admittedly haven't tried most of the alternatives but I don't think there is any 303 analog style drum machine/synths for the iPhone as powerful. Plus the makers seem very dedicated, and are looking into adding more features as well as potential integration with other programs. Technobox seems to be its biggest rival, I heard Randgrid is more powerful, but has a worse interface.

Jasuto...I have no clue how to use it, but the thing has tons of potential, and already can do things noise.io can't do from what I have seen.

Definitely worth the 99 cents .... actually worth more. I played with this for about an hour last night and found it very entertaining and well made ... I would have played longer but I got really relaxed and a little "zened" out. I could see making some compositions that I might want to record into Garageband and make loops out of.

If you're a rapper, or just like to freestyle, but don't know how to make beats. My team has an app in review that is like a looped beat soundboard. 9 custom and awesome beats that you can rap over. An update to mix different beats is going to come out too. Overall it's going to be pretty awesome.

I used to wait for a sale on apps that I want but I don't anymore ( the key word here being WANT) ... life's to short and not worth wasting days or weeks on to save a buck or two. Sometimes I catch apps when they're free or on sale and sometimes not .... I figure it all evens out in the end.

Hmmm, so far I have interest in Looptastic, iDrum, and Noise.io. Only thing I don't like about Looptastic and iDrum is the fact that there's more than one app, but I guess that makes it easier to figure out which one you like. For someone with no experience with sound synthesis, which app is good for a newbie like me? I'm hoping to find something thats user friendly but at the same time diverse and could evolve as I get "better". I'm open to any suggestions.

I think it's great that you have the knowledge to develop an app .... I'm sure it takes a lot of work. What I don't understand is why you don't put up a video on youtube to promote your app. I for one have been burned way too many times to buy an app anymore without getting to see it demonstrated. This is more true with music apps than any others since screen shots do you no good .... you have to hear it. So ... put up a video and I'll consider buying it .... otherwise .... forget it.

Bebot is really great, there's a lot more than the toyish appearance promises. And it just got a big update with presets and stuff.

Ellatron is also good, and it's getting updated regularly. I can't wait for the promised sequencer addition. A must for any prog-head.

I don't really understand all those apps that promise to be like Tenori-on... They really are lacking. Just driving a short sequence of bell-like notes does not make a usable instrument. They really should have several layers of sounds with pattern-chaining and recording options. Paklsound was an early attempt, but unfortunately the project was abandoned. A similar app with user loadable/recordable samples would be cool.

From the recently released music instrument apps I have liked the iSyn the most, balancing the stylished and easy interface, good number of features and excellent sound with cheap price. It feels like a pro-level synth/sequencer targeted to non-pro users, and as such there are some annoyances and compromises, but I think it really delivers. Never mind the stupid iName.

Megasynth is good too, but a bit more traditional (arpeggiator, sequencer and polyphony are the strongest points here).

Gravsynth

Take a look at the youtube demo ..... after watching I decided to hold off on buying Gravsynth .... the price will probably drop but even then I'm still not sure it's worth having. If you get it .... please let us know if it's better than it appears on youtube. youtube link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qsSf8oI5cc)

I wouldn't be able to make a call on which is better between Euphonics and Ellatron because I really like them both for different reasons. Euphonics is an easy app to instantly make some soothing and relaxing music and it does have some pretty nice features to modify the beat. Ellatron is the iPhone version of the 70's Mellatron which was an organ type instrument used in music made by bands such as Steppenwolf (born to be wild) and even the Beatles (strawberry fields). It's actually a really versatile app and you can get a very wide range of tones out of it.

I removed ToneBoard from my idevices until it's improved.

Chordica is a little cheesy. It's a guy from Japans app that uses his "scoreless music method" system and he's pretty much just trying to get people to take his classes. He's got a whole bunch of videos on youtube, just search. I thought there might be some potential since it does put out some pretty nice sound but it's coming off my idevices soon I think.

Nlog is free .... it's worth it :)

These are the apps I use:

BeatMaker, Noise.io, Star Guitar, VirtualDeck, DigiDrummer, Mixmeister Scratch (Nothing serious, just fun to use with your own music, I would reccomend VirtualDeck for the real deck experience), MooCow Music's Pianist, Guitarist, Bassist, and Organist.

BeatMaker is simply amazing, and I would refer it to anyone of any genre of music.

I will shamelessly advertise my own personal music, to get a simple idea of what it can do. ;)http://soundcloud.com/booch138 Keep in mind that my track "Drag Me Away" wasn't done ENTIRELY on Beatmaker, but the beat, bass, and everything of the track was. I just added synths and effects with M-Audio's Sessions program. I know its not the best music ever, but you get the point :D It's not normally what I do, I am more a Progressive Metal/Melodic Death Metal guy. But I listen to all sorts of music, and I am currently in a Punk/Psychobilly/Metal/Western/Surfer/Rock band.

Intua has it's own forums, and it would be cool to see more talented folks posting some of their tracks. I like hearing out what people can do with this machine. What I do most with BeatMaker, is I make even thrashy industrial beats, or thrashy death metal sh!t and I play along with my guitar (Real one, not an app lol)

Noise.io is nice, but only for finishing touches for me. I can never start a song innitially from Noise.io. Same with Star Guitar, but its a lot more simple than Noise.io.

Virtual Deck is cool to upload songs on and play around with them as if you were on real turn tables, the experience is quite nuts. I personally dig the hell out of it, and would suggest it to anyone with DJ Skills, or if you are just interested in learning the gist of it. Not saying you will learn how to do everything a DJ can do with this program, but damn near. Plus its fun and you can upload any of your songs via their uploading site. Its seemless.

DigiDrummer is nice, I like to record beats and play along with my guitar, but thats about it. It has no exporting function, which is sad because personally I think DigiDrummer has the best sounding drum sets on the app store, from what I have heard.

The MooCow Music's Pianist, Guitarist, Bassist, and Organist apps are awesome. Its cool that you can record your songs for later playback, but I wish they could at least work with each other, since you can't even export them as WAV files, or even Midi. But alas, if you record with the guitarist, thats all you get. Same with the others (Excluding bassist, you can't record anything on that). They are fun to use apps but if you are serious about trying to make actual music on the iPod, BeatMaker and Noise.io are your best bets. If you are Head Strong serious about making music, I would get a real instrement and music recording program on the PC. I am a musician in real life, and I love that BeatMaker allows me to at least make the beat of what I want, say at work, and be able to upload it to my computer, upload it in my Sessions program and dub over it with keyboard synths and guitars. It's truely amazing.

Wow .... thanks for sharing! I really liked them all .... quite a lot actually. I bookmarked your site so I can listen to them all in their entirety later.

I'm not a musician but I like making music. My creativity is what you see below in my signature for fine art but I also do a lot of video work and I make a lot of my own music for the soundtracks in short videos. For many years I've been using Garageband. I love making all kinds of music from hip hop to trance to just plain pretty melodies. If I was younger I would so work hard at becoming really good at electronic music but for now I will just enjoy it as something I can "play" with and have fun.

I don't have many games on my iPhone or iPod Touch so I frequent this apps forums a lot. I have really enjoyed the participation that this particular thread has gotten and I too, as the poster a few posts above, hope that we continue to post and share here.

Wow! Thank you for the compliment! That really means a lot to me. And as huge fan of abstract arts and the like, I checked out the abstract section of your art, and wow great job. All those photos you did yourself? Cause that quite amazing work you got there lol (not just the abstract, but the photography as well)

I work a simple data-entry desk job, but my dream job is to focus more on music, and actually create music for video games. Like, I would love nothing more. If you know any developers that are seeking a musician that can make a tone for pretty much any genre of music, have em look me up cause I am interested. I would need to create a larger, and broader portfolio, but I guess I should work on that!

I really like the feedback of this thread too. Its too bad there isn't a "TouchArcade.com" for music apps. I mean this thread is tight and I'm glad there is at least this, but I am sure there are more app musicians out there!

TonePad ....free well grabbing that and after having watched the videos have picked up Euphonics.

I agree that its a major shame that the rest of the music apps dont go the same way as Noise.IO and export so that you can use what you create in Beatmaker. It means instead of having a complete music generation in your iphone you have a lot of music games / demos. Nice to place but you cannot do a lot with them

Hey Soup ..... how do you like Keplers Orrery?

Booch138
05-20-2009, 10:19 AM
Exactly. That's why I am not sure why more of them don't export in WAV or MIDI. They would get SO MUCH more playability out of them, at least from me. I am no professional either but I know how to make a few songs, and the apps in the store are more than capable of working together, if only they could export to WAV. I mean like I said, the other apps are cool to play with, but I mean I dont use them to replace real instrements in a band, and I would only use them to make music on the iPod. Why wouldnt they? Is is hard to be able to develop and engine that can do that (I am no developer, so I have no idea)? I mean even if they couldnt export DIRECTLY into beatmaker (Like Noise.io does) at least give an export to the comp, so I can do the work from there. I'm sure Intua (BeatMaker) and Amidio (Noise.io) have a agreement with each other that only they can export to BeatMaker, but like I said, straight to the comp is fine with me too.

Booch138 .... do you live in Arizona?

I agree about the Wav exporting. It's a hassle but I just plug into Garageband then export and convert to Wav.

I'm also glad you like my galleries .... it's what I really enjoy doing but in the real world for real money I'm an offroad photographer .... in fact I'm on my way (having left Arizona) to Lake Tahoe to work the summer on the grand daddy of all offroad trails .... The Rubicon Trail.

Yup, I live in Central Arizona, in a sh!t-f*** town called Coolidge. My Bandmates live in the neighboring town, Casa Grande, which is a little bigger, but still sh!tty (Our location is about 30-40 miles south of Chandler/Gilbert/Tempe/The Valley in General lol). That sounds like a really fun (and rewarding) job. I have a couple friends who used to live in AZ that left in pursuit of a Photography career. One lives in Oregon, and takes pictures for some museum (Lost contact with him, last I heard) and one lives in Wisconsin, and she actually goes on tour with some bands (Namly in the Warped-Tour Scene) and does Photography with them.

Yeah I use M-Audio Sessions, which is pretty nice. I just plug in my iPod and record from it as if I am recording a guitar if I really needed to loop synths through, but thats why I like exports better. If its WAV I just upload it in the song and overdub like hell ;)

It would just be cool it all the apps exported in WAV. I'm really lazy ^.^ hhehehe drive safe to Lake Tahoe, and have fun. Its beautiful over there... but really f***ing hot as of late. God damn global warming.

Here's yet one more Tenori-on wannabe app, a new one called Soundgrid (app:soundgrid) (I hope the link works). This one has many features missing from the others: 8 layers, different sounds including a drum kit, 8 switchable 16-step patterns per layer... and each pattern can be resized to anything between 1 to 16 steps - great for complex rhythmic patterns! The sounds are okay, and the dev has promised soundpack import and many other cool features. Priced $.99 at the moment.

I almost did not buy this, as there are so many half-cooked attempts done already, but the feature list was so convincing that I had to check it out. Glad I did, as SoundGrid feels a LOT more usable than the other similar apps. I'm only missing the tempo adjustment, but the dev told me it will be added.

Verdict: Recommended.

I picked up a few more fantastic music apps:

Organist - The sound is excellent. It is limited to 4 sound banks, but the church organ and the theater organ (they call it electric) are top notch. There is an option for dual keyboards, allowing 4 full octaves on screen, although depending on the size of your fingertips, you might not effectively use that much. I find that 10 keys per keyboard is a good amount for my sausage fingers, allowing three full scales, although I usually don't go for a full run of keys so that I have lower and higher registers. I really like how it handles the entire fretboard. There are button sliders and tabs allowing you to quickly move a couple of notes up or down from your current range or quickly advance to your next full set of keys. There is a key lock that ensures that you won't accidentally change the keyboards while playing. You can record and overdub though and that's another plus. It will allow you move rearrange your keyboards for the overdubbing and the original recording will stay in the same register. What it won't allow you to do is overdub with a different sound bank. It's not a traditional synth, so there aren't many technogadget frills, but all in all, Organist is great. I find myself turning down the tv volume and providing a soundtrack, old timey style.

Drum Meister - Awesome customization! You can arrange the components of kit to your liking. This really sealed the deal for me. It's a nice kit featuring bass drum, snare, hi-hat (open and closed), four toms, plus ride, crash and splash cymbals. There are a lot of little things that make this kit work. Recording and playback is simple. You even have the option for control the bass drum or cymbals with motion control. The sound is fantastic and the cymbals really ring out well. Playing along with your ipod music is great as well. Drum Meister has excellent, responsive touch control and is highly recommended.

iKoto - This sounds great and is really easy to play. The touch controls are very responsive and the pitch bend means that this sounds pretty authentic. There are a lot of preset tone scales that you can use and an option that shows the key of each string. The recording feature is also pretty neat. You can play along with your recording. I haven't messed around with exporting yet, but it appears that you can output your recordings as wav files. iKoto is really outstanding and is relaxing and very fun to play.

Do you guys realize how awesome this stuff is going to be when OS 3.0 comes out? That means we will be able to import the library, and therefore, manipulate it.

Unless there is already a sampler that lets you manipulate audio files like Radiohead did in Everything In Its Right Place. I can't remember what they used, but it cost like $300.

WOW, great find. That looks incredibly useful.

The description says it has a score editor that uses touch controls. It'd be great if you can enter notes that way. It'd be an instant buy then. I've been waiting for a score editor ever since I got my iPhone.

I really want to see a review or a video first. The interface is kind of important with something like this. Although, if the dev is smart enough to make note recognition software, I'm sure he can make a decent interface.

Hi I am the developer of iComposer and I havn't received email from you.
I released the first version in a little bit of rush, so iComposer doesn't have good mannual for now, and iComposer is more complicated than normal iPhone Apps, so it is a little difficult to master it for non-professional users.

My suggestion is to wait one more week, a minor update with quick help will be on the App Store. Or you can wait for reduced $0.99 versions and free trial, hopefully they will be released in 2 weeks.

Thank you for your interest,

Yes, but it is not as powerful as Sibelius, and you have to spend some time on practicing grabbing the note with your finger tips, it is a software on mobile device after all. The way to export is existed but it is a little tricky, you need to use other software on PC to copy those files from iPhone to PC. I have scheduled to set a web server for exporting files in next major version. You can refer to http://icomposer.wordpress.com/2009/05/28/how-to-copy-exported-files-to-pc-icomposer/ for more exporting stuff. :)

Hi everybody,

On 28th of May I published my application "MusicPad" on AppStore.

A short description: you can type what chord you want to play, choosing the root note, the chord type and (if desidered) up to 3 alterations (b2, #9, #11, ...) and, after having press "play", you will listen the chord with the actual selected sound (I put 10 high quality sounds to choose).

I am a guitarist, and I wanted an application where I can create music backgrounds for my live performances, to introduce some songs.
I am using it also to "ear-training", because I can listen immediately the chords that I have to recognize.

There is a youtube demo (not very professional, but it is the best I can do now):

Please let me know if he answers you. I have read some reviews in itunes and it seems that it is a little difficult to use.

I have been in touch with the developer. I will tell you that he is committed to making iComposer a beneficial application for musicians, and that he plans to continue to refine and expand his application.

I personally have been working with iComposer for several days. While I am planning on posting a video and a more comprehensive review in a few days, here is my initial feedback:

I can hum a tune that is rumbling about in my head and iComposer captures it. Need I say more?
You have a mobile track editor. Yes there are some little nuances that you need to master to use it, but I think my video will help in that area.
The documentation on the developers site is being expanded daily. Just yesterday he posted instructions on how to transfer MIDI files to your PC.
You have eight tracks to work with for an iDevice app, which just blows my mind.

All said this is one seriously cool app. I will attempt to cover everything that iComposer offers in my video so that you can see for yourself while you wait for the lite and free versions that the developer has promised.

Great! I'm looking forward to your video and to the possibility of purchasing this app. My problem is that I can't sing well so I'm hoping that this will have the features necessary to correct my occasional (ha) bad notes.

Can you write music without the singing? Could I have 3 staves, one g clef and F clef staves? As I'll be writing organ music, humming or singing is not going to make for me. I would just like to use it as pocket sibelius or finale.

I am sorry for asking you many questions, but I am really interested in this app and I just want to know if is it what I need.

thanks

You can write music without humming through manual entry, or you can use a combination of the two, humming and manual entry. Presently, you can have up to 8 staffs. They can be any combination of G an F staffs. I will try to post some screenshots in the next day or so that cover some of the functionality of iComposer not shown in App Store.

It exports in MIDI format. You can then manually transfer the file to your desktop. There are instructions for doing so under Windows on the developer's site. I believe that he is working on instructions for the Mac as well.

The developer has told me that a future version of iComposer will include the capability to export and transfer files via a website.

Yes, I will post more screenshots on my blog, but I need a little more time before I process those screenshots. Because a critical bug was found in the notes recognition module and several other bugs were found in accidentals usage, I think I have to fix them at first. I am sorry for slow progress, my time is so limited. Whatever, several weeks later, we can have a better iComposer and its lite version, then you can try lite version first.

For .mus format, currently I have no idea about it, but if most of your guys need it, I can add it, its priority depends on its importance for you:).

Thanks.

Thank you for your purchase,

There are several identified bugs in iComposer 1.0.0, hopefully they will be fixed in the version 1.0.2. So if the auto-transcribed notes are not right, it's my fault and your singing are correct:P

During the last week, I have received so many feedbacks and great suggestions from your guys. I’d like to thank you all.

Now have a long todo list. After prioritized all tasks on the list, I think I need 2 or 3 more weeks to solve some important problems, then I can release version 1.0.2 and lite versions.

So, for people who have already downloaded iComposer, I assure you a better and better music app, I wouldn’t stop improving iComposer. For people who have intention to download iComposer or want to try lite versions, please still have your eyes on iComposer update news and wait for several weeks, I hope you will enjoy it.

Special thanks for my friend ivforlife, he has taught me so many things and given me many valuable advices, he is such a selfless mentor for me.

I have to agree. I heard a sample of this several days ago and quickly decided I would not be making the purchase. Reminds me of the sounds in the old arcade video games as well as old computer games .... all I see in my head is some pixel man jumping on a pixel mushroom head and then side scrolling on his way to stomp on more pixel bad guys.

Not all chiptune sounds like old computer game music. More modern chiptunes sound a lot different. Try listening to artists such as Slagsmalklubben, Unicorn Kid, Machine Supremacy, or Kkrusty. They can use chiptune in conjunction with other beats to make a neat twist on the average chiptune.

I recently bought Chordlab (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=315157583&mt=8) and so far am pretty impressed! It's a little steep at $9.99, but as a songwriter for a band the ability to look up chords based on the notes that I'm playing it's definitely worth it. Also a big fan of the Circle of 5ths feature and the fact that you can arpeggiate the chords during playback.

Hello all!

I was wondering if anyone knew of a simple app that lets you compose little song ideas. Either using a staff, or a piano roll, I'd just like to be able to fire it up and save a melody, with maybe a bass line as well, something simple like that.

From skimming this thread, I've seen iComposer and even possibly 8bitune, but both of those (along with Beatmaker, obviously) are a little expensive.

I guess I'm looking for something more along the lines of the little melody creators they used to have on Nokia cell phones and stuff that let you compose simple ringtones and stuff.. that was perfect for quickly saving little song ideas.

Thanks in advance!
- Nate

I'm thinking about grabbing this one as well -- it's by the musician BT (Brian Transeau) and it's geared towards live remixing of music (including the BT "Stutter Edit").

BT posted this on his wall on Facebook about it:
Sonifi iPhone application released today! June 17th, 2009 the first remixing engine of it's kind. It's the ability to access and change beats, bass, harmonic or melodic figures in real time, the user can even recreate BT’s Stutter Edit technique, just by shaking the phone, it contains the ability to connect two iPhones or iPod Touch, over Bluetooth, enabling even strangers to become a remix team!

I have a pet peeve with developers who don't put up a demo of their app on youtube or on their website. I have found that the majority of music apps that have flaws or just plain sound bad don't have demos. I usually don't trust the reviews of a new app when it gets a bunch of 5 star ratings within 2 days of release as they are often friends who are helping their developer buddy. I will wait until I see a demo or get an opinion from someone I trust (like from here). But I agree that the app looks interesting.

1) What do you recommend for a complete newbie? Would you recommend me Beatmaker + Star guitar + Star piano or i'll have too much pain to understand it? it's ok to learn but i don't like to be left alone with thousands of buttons with very few or no hints.

2) Once you're happy with your tune and have it recorded, is there a way to put it on your computer and make a mp3 ? or is it going to be limited?

Thanks.

I'd recommend Beatmaker. I'm new to music making and it was very easy to learn. Noise.io is also a very resourceful tool, but the learning curve is pretty heavy. You can put your work on the computer as a wav. file, but you can convert it to mp3 after that.

I've really been loving the ability to create your own beats using the built in microphone. You can record your own voice or sample sounds such as tapping on a glass. You can even alter the sound with some effects they've included. Really great for making beats that don't sound exactly like other drum/beatmaking apps.
There really hasn't been much in the way of quality music making apps released lately ..... I'm hoping that there's some good stuff on the horizon. Anyone know of anything in the works?

Amidio has decent products, but not the best. However, I would suggest Noise.io with the warning of the steep steep learning curve (if you have little to no knowledge about synth and sythn effects). It's tough to get used to, but the interface is actually fairly clean, and all in all, mega worth it in the end if you know how to use it right. I like it a lot, and havn't heard many that didn't like it aside from learning everything about it. It's not THAT bad.

noise io looks like a nice program....i may try it.
even though i havent touched a synth in years...i will probably have a difficult time with some of the functions..

organerito;
i just want to be able to mix and write music on the go. beatmaker is great for what it is...i actually really like the editing format, its very easy to use.
but, i want to be able to do my own loops. beatmaker's 16 pad is a real hinderance when youre only dealing with the preloaded sounds.
ideally, i just want a keyboard with a LOT of effects and the ability to record.
it looks like noise io has a lot of features that i wouldnt necessarily use...but, i might eventually if i learn HOW to use them :)

if beatmaker made a drum loop and keyboard loop making kit, then it would be the perfect program!

Hi,

I'm new to TouchArcade, as a poster, 2 months or so as a lurker and absolute new apple/iphone user, but looked at this thread and discovered it is for musicians using the iPhone as an instrument and I was wondering if there was a thread for musicians using their iPhone as a tool for their other instrument(s) here?

I use several apps already that I've purchased as a music/guitar teacher and have been trying to find other sources/reviews/sites that review music applications (not synths or applications to play music).

Not wanting to hijack this thread, but its title lead me here after a search and I couldn't find one specifically musician related.

I thought best to ask forum regulars before posting a new thread (a search for music brought me 54 pages in this subforum).

Kind regards
Jason

Same here. I'm waiting for some feedback before spending money. The videos do not tell much about what you can do with it.

The latest music apps I have been enjoying are FingerBeat, iSyn and iSequence - much goodness for low $, despite the corny iNames.

EDIT:
Ok, after watching the new tutorial videos, I took the plunge. Not so bad, the velocity sensitivity is a bit hit and miss making it hard to control the instument volume accurately. Also, as the recording works by overdubbing, there is no editing capabilities - what you play in a track, stays. I have encountered some sound glitches too. Overall, a bit overpriced but fun to play.

There is a new app out that is a stripped down version of BeatMaker called easyBeats (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=323674242&mt=8).

It costs $2.99. Their website is:

http://www.hopefullyuseful.com/view/easybeats

They have a video that provides a fairly good overview of the functionality of easyBeats:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTMgi3dhInY&feature=player_embedded

For those that want a beatmaking app without the depth and breath offered by an app like BeatMaker, or if you are just starting out and are a bit overwhelmed by BeatMaker, easyBeats might be right for you.

What the heck, I'll go for it. Like I don't need one more music app?

easyBeats begins with the option to start working with the application, run the tutorial (which amounts to showing the same video that is on their website), or going to their website via Safari.

The tutorial video is a nice touch for first time users. The disadvantage is that while it plays you can't work along. I can see though where if you just downloaded easyBeats to your iDevice and had nothing to go on that the video would be of great help.

Once you start you have your typical 4x4 pad interface. Unlike BeatMaker, the management or controlling buttons are all visible and laid out around the edge of the pad. There is no fancy graphics, just simple buttons with text, but that is okay. It makes it straightforward and easy to understand what each button does.

A default kit is loaded when you begin. There are three kits that come with easyBeats. To start to lay down a beat all you need to do is press the 'Rec' button. When you do, a metronome automatically begins to keep pace with the BPM you have configured. The default is 120 BPM. You can easily change this by pressing the 'Menu' button.

From there it is fairly standard beatmaking. You can switch between 'Rec' and 'Play' mode to work out what you want to lay down.

From the pad interface you can tap the 'Mode' button to toggle back and forth between the pad interface and a grid editing interface that reminds me of ToneBoard or Melodica. The difference is with the grid, each row represents one of the pads in the current kit. You can switch to grid mode to correct a rhythm that you mistakenly laid down, enter one directly in the grid, move a rhythm from one pad to another, and even copy and paste grids.

There are four bars, or grids, that you can work with. While this is a significantly smaller and more limited to what you have with BeatMaker, it is at the same time in its own way simpler to understand and work with. To move between bars you drag two fingers simultaneously to the left.

Another feature that easyBeats offers is the ability to set the velocity, or volumn, of each pad on each beat using what I would best describe as a graphic equalizer interface. When you grid interface you press the 'Vel' button which takes you to the equalizer-like interface. By default all of the bars for each beat of the given pad are at maximum. By dragging your finger up and down, swooping across, or any other motion, you can configure the volume that you want for a pad during the current bar. You can do this for each pad individually.

Some of the other features include the ability to:

Set the BPM.
Toggle the metronome on and off.
Load different kits.
Load saved patterns (the name given to your rhythms).
Import sound clips to use as pads.

Overall easyBeats is a solid, entry level beatmaking app. You can create your own kits, quickly build, edit and save patterns.

The one item that I would like to see them add is to be able to record and save your songs in MP3 format.

At $2.99 easyBeats is a great buy for someone that is looking to get into beatmaking but is not ready to, has the interest in, or needs the power and capabilities offered through BeatMaker.

Hey all,

I'm the developer of easyBeats and stumbled onto this thread via google.

Firstly cheers to IVForLife for the thorough review, I was quite surprised to see something like that so soon.

I made easyBeats because I thought there was room for drum/sample sequencer for the more casual user. BeatMaker is awesome and well worth the money but probably too much (in both features and price) for the people I'm looking to cater to.

You can currently save and load 4 bar patterns that you create but it's true that there is currently no wav export. This is something that will certainly be rectified in a future update (I just need the time), but to be honest for a 1.0 version app I still feel that easyBeats is killer value :).

In any case as with my other application, the most requested features get the top priority so if you end up buying easyBeats and want something added then use our support page and ask for it .

I think the first thing I'm going to add is an auto save when you exit the app, then look to improve the import/export features. The design can obviously be improved and I'm might look into that later on but it's harder (I'm a coder not a designer obviously :) )

Wow, nice to see a developer here. Well easyBeats looks like a very useful software with a great price. I hope it does well. I would get it, but seeing as I already have Beatmaker, I'll pass.

I have both Beatmaker and EasyBeats. I find EasyBeats a nice addition to my music apps .... yes Beatmaker does a lot more but EasyBeats is still a lot of fun, easy to learn, and useful. Of course it will be more useful when it gets the export option :) I really like the MelodyBox kit which is like Melodica or ToneMatrix.

I don't think that it's entirely fair to compare the two apps .... yes they are similar but the creation process is unique and there are some different options in both apps.

I must add that the in app video tutorial is great and something I'd like to see more developers do.

Synthpond is great and I used it to "construct" my final project for my last class for college, a Maymester course about the fourth dimension (time, for those who don't know, where both past and future coexist with the now) If I remember correctly there are 12 different pitches you can select in that app, so I put 12 nodes down, each with a different starting pitch. They rotated pitches, so to speak, at equal intervals, so that theoretically all 12 pitches would be sounding simultaneously thus producing a single tone. That's without taking account of listening position, which the app accounts for by letting you select where among the nodes you're listening. I had the nodes rotating around each other, too, so their positions were constantly changing relative to the listening position. Basically, you would hear different pitches constantly shifting even though a single overall sound was being produced. Sorry if this is confusing, I'm sure my wording's not very clear and you have to have used the app to visualize it, but the class thought it was pretty cool.

In short, thanks, Synthpond! :D

So I was probably not going to purchase this, but was on the fence when I read ivforlife's review of it. But just because the developer took the time to talk to us, I decided to purchase it anyways (one more music app never hurts). Let me start off by saying that I am an avid Beatmaker user. easyBeats has SUCH tremendous value. I mean for it's price it's a simpler BeatMaker. Extremely easy to use, pick up and play, and user friendly. UI could use some work, but over all it's a very nice music recording/recording program. Would be cool to get some kind of import, but then again BeatMaker does that and this app was 2.99 lol.

Awesome price, nice sound quality. And mega easy to use.

Hello from Amidio Inc. and thank you for your feedback and opinions about our apps. :)

Here's something that you will like. We're going to give away 5 free redeemable codes for our new app JR Hexatone Pro (made in collaboration with Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater)

JR Hexatone Pro (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=324435715&mt=8) (App Store link) - the first official Jordan Rudess app for the iPhone - is a “next-generation” hexagonal loop generation tool that uses artificial intelligence and advanced randomization algorithms to produce constantly changing sonic structures.

Imagine a 6-directional drum machine/rhythm sequencer where only your imagination is the limit. Every sequence can be totally chaotic, random, or strict and controlled. Hexatone is capable of producing constantly changing, insanely addictive rhythms. You only choose the best and then export them to Intua Beatmaker / desktop DAW via the built-in Wi-Fi server.

Jordan's introduction video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5usPtRhbyBA
Factory presets video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZ8kDVXbPXQ

So, here are the FREE PROMO CODES! :D

RNLAAFRY7MEN (still redeemable?)
KEXFHAJJJ7N6 (still redeemable?)

J479MY9MRXLW (taken)
KTYLAPH9PF3X (taken)
3NE4RWNMPPH6 (taken)

The rules are simple: if you redeem a code - please reply with something like "I took code XXXX".

Thanks! And have fun with JR Hexatone ;)

Being a producer of my own beats since 1993, I’ve always had a sampler/sequencer, records, 2 turntables, and a mixer. As time has gone by, my hardware and software collection have grown like crazy. Advancement in musical technology is completely insane but I love it! Laptops, Serato (yes I still support & buy vinyl), Ableton Live, and now my effing iPhone is added into this musical madness mix.

Beatmaker (staple)
Noise.io (staple)
Bebot (newest staple)
Ocarina (I’ve used it live)
Leaf Trombone (never for live use but I’ve used it to record samples)

I thought I was safe. Now I know I am screwed because I want that auto tune app Smule is working on, and now Hexatone…I know where $10.00 is going when I get paid tomorrow!

*Sigh* someday I’ll actually work on an actual EP. As for now I am too busy collecting sound equipment! Haha.

Bit of a flurry recently. Bought:

* Hexatone (cool but complicated!)
* SunVox (awesome but very complicated!)
* Mujik (limited, but fun and free)
* Futuresound (not what I was hoping, really)
* Star6 (cool fun, very easy to use)
* FingerBeat (Simple, fun, very polished, built-in sampling)
* Dopplerpad (great sound, very flexible, needs editing)
* Mixdex (fantastic loops, quirky interface)

Costing me a fortune!

For those of you that are not already aware of this functionality, it is way cool and in my opinion makes iDrum one of the required music apps for your iDevice.

Did you know you can transfer your own samples, patterns and kits back and forth from iDrum on your PC or Mac (http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/idrum/) to iDrum on the iPhone/iPod touch? You can start a beat on your phone, and finish it at home. Or take your ideas on the road. All you need is iDrum on your computer, iDrum on your handset, and a Wi-Fi network. Watch the video here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-rZ68QQWLY&fmt=22).

If they're any drummers out there like myself, you owe it to yourself to buy Superdrummer Pro (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=323257160&mt=8) Best $5 I've spent in awhile. There's also a lite version (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=323354232&mt=8)

Now iZotope has its place in my home studio so naturally I’d trust iDrum. I don’t have a need for iDrum on my iPhone because I have it on my home PC and Laptop. Probably the only 'drumming software' (for the iPhone) I’d ever suguest for hip hop, drum n bass, downtempo beat makers aside from sampling what you want off records.

I think someone needs to make an app that reads and writes Power Tab files. (If you don't know what Power Tab is, check out power-tab.net... it's free and one of the most useful programs to have if you're a guitarist.)

Anyway, I have no developing skills myself, but if any developers see this... I can't tell you how awesome it would be to be able to create and play Power Tab files on my phone, while I'm on the go. It'd be amazing. I'd even pay for it, even though the PC one is free.

This has probably been mentioned before,
but I LOVE 'Sonifi'. It is amazing, the sound quality is excellent and the visualization/effects are nice.

Also 'Loop DNB extended' is an excellent Drum n' Bass app. It let's you make songs by adding beat loops, synths, bass, and other sfx.
