View Full Version : Think I might make the dive...

I am considering making the dive on Jailbreaking after hearing all the wonderful responses to its effects on their ipod's capabilities, but I need some questions answered first.
First of all, I have heard that it has little effect on the performance on your ipod but can result in your ipod "bricking", so my question is what exactly is "bricking" and is that the furthest extent of the damage to your ipod?
Next, I was wondering just how the jailbreaking works. Is there loading of files onto your computer involved in the process? And if so can there be any viruses put in with the download? Basically, is there any way that my ipod or computer can be infected with viruses or any other damaging things?
Overall jailbreaking seems great but I just want to be sure that I cannot damage my ipod or computer in the process.
I realize that it is likely that all of these things have been discussed in the past but I just want to have a few definitive answers that I cannot accidentally misinterpret.
Thanks,
Alex

It might happen to some but hasn't happened to me
Bricking is like something that makes it so iPod won't work eg damaged firmware
First off download quick freedom and custom221 and follow instructions on quick freedom this is untethered btw so it's all good
The only reason u might want to load files on the computer is if u want to
download cracked apps but other than that u don't have to download much
There isn't really a virus yet for itouch iPhone
I haven't recieved viruses from what I have downloaded

All right thanks.
So basically just follow a tutorial by the book and I should be fine?

No problems at all. No viruses on the computer or ipod/iphone. Just make sure you download from a trusted place, and thats it. THe only files to copy from computer to ipod is if u SSH themes or apps but I dont do that, i like to do everything from the ipod, like install themes from cydia.
And if you dont like the jailbreak, u can always restore :)

I was nervous too. And got an error. Thing is, you can always get back into DFU mode and restore to either normal or retry the jailbreak. Just use This here (redtool-dev.org)

Yes. An unofficial, relatively crappy version of Quake 3. Jailbreak opens so many things to your iPod. I can't seem to understand how I did it before jailbreak. Themes, emulators, and more control of YOUR device make it so worth it.

Yep, I am sold on the features, but just want to make sure I jailbreak with only the benefits and none of the problems.

If you have trouble with Quick Freedom (which I doubt you would have) you can always just watch a tutorial on Youtube.
I wouldn't worry about bricking it. You have to try really hard to brick your iPod, especially now that there's an untethered GUI program that does everything for you, which is Quick Freedom.
Overall, the benefits of jailbreaking far outweigh the problems. Your device can be a little bit slower, but you have so much more control over everything, I mean EVERYTHING. If you look hard enough, you can find ways to change just about every feature of your device to fit your liking.

QuickFreedom is horrible. I know that it seems as if everyone has used it, but honestly, RedTool (redtool-dev.org) is much, much better.

I'll be interested in seeing what RedTool becomes, but I'm also excited for the imminent release of QuickPwn. I was very happy with Untetherizer though

RedTool has the potential to become what WinPwn could and should have been.
Untetherizer is open source now. :)

Great!!! So I decided to use QuickFreedom (I guess a mistake) and everything went according to plan, but at the end in the middle of restore there was an error message saying:
The ipod could not be restored. An unknown error occured (13).
This is obviously not good. Any help?

I have no clue. Used to get an error of that sort but just switched computers and it worked. Probably something wrong with the firmware. Well anyways, anyone know how to jailbreak a 2G iPotch? Can't get anything to work right now.

to the originals poster, don't listen to inferi or nuggetsfan. They have absolutely NO CLUE what they are talking about.
As for your error with QuickFreedom, i'm pretty sure I have the solution. After putting your iPod in DFU mode, did you go through the "Pre-jailbreak" step? It's a button on the DFU mode step, and you have to run that (Which pwns the ipod using the 24k exploit). you can't simply restore with the custom firmware
I've used QuickFreedom four times (I'm someone that messes with A LOT of files though, don't let that discourage you from jailbreaking :p) to jailbreak my ipod and another couple of times to jailbreak friends' ipod, and it worked great each time.

Yes, I pressed Pre-Jailbreak in DFU mode and let it process until it told me to continue.
I have no idea what I screwed up.:(

Hmm. All I can think of is that the firmware was bad...Try:
1: Re-making the custom firmware
2: Re-dowload the firmware, then do step 1 again. Make sure you download the ORIGINAL 2.2.1 FIRMWARE from the link in the first part of quickfreedom.
If that doesn't work, try using a different computer, or borrowing a friends' even?

Ok well Red Tool doesn't even work. Just says application failed to load press ok to exit. Quick Freedom just sucks and doesn't work at all. Tried pressing jailbreak and then it went fine until the iPod DFU mode. Put it in DFU mode and it didn't recognize my iPod so then I couldn't put it into pre-jailbreak mode.

Try building your own ipsw

OK well I finally jailbroke it manually using a guide I found on modmyi.com. It's for Mac computers, not Windows so yeah worked perfectly fine for me. So anyone using a Mac, it's a long way until a new version of PwnageTool unless you want to jailbreak it manually. Wasn't too hard, you just have to follow every single step or it'll fail. Took me about 30-40 min.

Until I finally took the dive and tried last night. Its AMAZING! You can do so much more! I now have a way better looking background, I can control what background apps are running to save battery and memory. (And everything is free).
I highly suggest using a quickfreedom JB, they have a version that installs and walks you through what to do WHILE you do it, EXTREMELY helpful :).

That was the opposite of me. I couldn't get the firmware to work, so I got one from filefront and it worked perfectly.
