There are tons of where's Toki Tori threads. Basically, it's still being developed but Chillingo just announced on their Twitter account that they'll now be publishing Toki Tori!
Chillingo swoops in EVERY big upcoming title.

I will say this:
1) It was originally a gameboy color game, which may worry you about the controls? don't! here's why:
2) I played it on WiiWare
3) I LOVED IT TO PIECES
4) I used the wiimote-pointer interface, and it worked very well, with ONE EXCEPTION
5) that exception was an EXTREMELY tightly timed level, that it just wasn't precise enough, but I eventually did it, and that was the only, isolated problem, the pointer interface was good 99.9999999% of the time
6) If the touch controls are anything like the wii-mote controls, this game won't be another crappy port, it'll be a really, really fun/unique puzzler for the iphone
on the Wii I felt like it was The Lost Vikings minus some of the fun (due to the GBC being much more limited than the hardware that The Lost Vikings was made on, but it made up for it in other ways and was still very fun) but on the iPhone the pacing seems much more sensible. I predict it will be a 10/10 game. The devs took a lot of care with the controls on the Wii, I'm sure they will on the iphone too.

Chillingo has made a name for themselves. Most of the titles they publish turn a profit. People follow them on twitter, and look out for what they're doing. Yes they're a "man in the middle," but they are much less expensive than alternative marketing routes. Most people associate "chillingo" with good games.
Also, IIRC, they often lend resources such as devs that are familiar with iphone development, artists, etc. that can help a 1-person game programmer out a LOT, help them make a 3-star into a 5-star game just with art assets and other various assistance

Depends.
If your game blows up into a huge success, they take out a bigger piece of your cake. But then again, there is a smaller chance of your app blowing app had you published yourself.

SlideToPlay and Toucharcade have videos of the game on the iPhone. It looks good.

k i get it,Chilllingo has a name. But not all of their games are appealing.
Doesnt it make more sense if ur game is GOOD, for example DEV from iShoot, wouldnt the game sells itself?
Is not like i even look at 'whos' the publisher before i purchase, I dun go 'oh iDracula by Chillingo, must be a good game...'
Im more like 'iDracula looks sick, im buying it'

The problem the appstore has is its limited visibility, imo I think apple could make some small changes to the app store in order for customers to easily find a game they're interested in without going on a massive hunt maybe instead of the traditional eight apps they have under the "News and Noteworthy" and "Whats Hot" categories they could have maybe sixteen maybe even an "Underdog/Most Overlooked category" just to boost visibility. Honestly before I found toucharcade and other places which help point out the decent apps and the apps to watch for I would spend more then enough time trying to find some good games for my iPod Touch.
Chillingo gives you that visibility boost showing off games with maybe not a huge amount of money to spend campaigning and marketing. The publisher is basically your manager. You do all the creating and the publisher promotes it and makes it happen.
I've heard adds cost more then a pretty penny so it's good for those people with a sort tight/limited budget or who just don't want to deal with the hassle of promoting their product after it's finished.
And another reason i've been going over in my head is that they would want a publisher because they aren't too sure how their app will do so maybe they don't have to pay the extra hundred dollars just to submit their app to the App Store and have it be a dud that would be $100 down the drain, but I don't know just a thought.

When the hell is this game coming out?!? Back in February I read an article saying the same damn "Toki Torio... Hatching Soon" garbage that I've been seeing ever since. Then, out of nowhere, this wonderful news is revealed 10 days ago that it will be out "soon".
My question... what the hell is "soon"!?!? They used "soon" 2 months ago and now are using it again. I just want to play the damn game :p
I read somewhere it was May, will double check that.

We received a very early preview copy from the developers themselves back in February: http://toucharcade.com/2009/02/25/preview-video-of-iphone-puzzle-platformer-toki-tori/
but haven't received a new copy since Chillingo has taken the publishing over.

To be fair, I'd say TouchMyApps and AppGamer aren't "bum sites". We were given a build earlier in the month as well but haven't got around to writing a preview.
Okay, I checked them out and they aren't bum sites (the others in the twitter are though). Still a mystery why they got a bunch of previews and the top sites didn't.

Well, as far as I know, my co-editors aren't previewing it because they have their plates full already with Assassin's Creed and CJS ( ;) ). I just did an exclusive interview with Underworlds' Chief Creative Officer and we're still trying to get other exclusives with Firemint and new information for Star Defense. I have some news you guys might not have got from Xpressed (makers of UniWar) on the new update, but I didn't plan on releasing that news because they gave me the bare minimum -- not worth an article (yet).
Toki Tori looks fun though, only one of us got the preview build so that explains why I'm not covering it.

Hi Candy, will later levels incorporate more complicated puzzles? Because the first few levels look really easy and repetitive. Will there be different environments, enemies, items, etc (progressive a la old school platformers)? Or is it just different obstacles on the same background again and again?

I don't know what the release date is currently. Never got one in the press release as well. I don't think my boss even knows.
The details are wonderful. I never played the gameboy color or the Nintendo Wii-ware version but all I know is that the IDEVICE version is gorgeous.

So what happens if the last few levels of the final game are broken but the reviewers give the preview copy a great score cause there was time to polish off a 20 level game than one with 80?

We gave them a preview version with only 20 levels yes. One of the reasons why we did that was because preview versions aren't signed or anything. One could simply rip it without cracking and put it online. It would be a shame to lose a game like that before it even got launched ;-) Hope this makes sense?

Hi Brett,
The controls have been tweaked to the fullest and I know you are a supporter of multiple control methods, but we're 100% sure that no other control method would work better than the one we use right now.
If possible send over your UDID and I can get you a preview version of the game, just to see what we mean. I'm confident that you'll like what we've done :-) The original movie showed on TouchArcade was an example of not final controls, things have changed dramatically in that area. In fact I personally feel it works better than the Wii controls... But don't take my word for it, test it yourself! :-D

I dunno, alot of games come out on tuesdays.
I really hope it comes out tonight or tomorrow, I really want it. I just don't see it hapenning.
Something that makes me think that may be releasing it soon, is that they've had no contact on twitter after they said it'd been approved, maybe they're lining up all of their advertising and whatnot.

You've got a good point there. But I think that people visiting TwoTribe's Twitter and reading that it's been approved, and then waiting a few days for the dev to put it on the App Store, aren't going to buy as easily as if the game is in the App Store as soon as it's approved.

I'm a big fan of puzzle/adventure and staged puzzle games like Adventures of Lolo, Bobby Carrot for example. I liked Toki Tori for the GBC years ago and I hear the iphone version is even better. The GBC and wii versions were very polished, Two Tribes makes good games, and there aren't too many polished puzzle games for the iphone. So anyway, those who like puzzle games should love this game, but if someone isnt into puzzle games then I can see them not caring too much for Toki Tori.

i think the plan is to hand out codes which allow sites like touch arcade to try it out while it hasn't been populated to the store yet, build the hype and then it will be released. I doubt we see it until 3 or 4 sites get their reviews up.

I just don't get why two tribes would do that... there are tons of sites that have done previews with videos and photos and gave us their impressions of the games. if they do what u think they're gonna do, that's kinda dumb on their behalf. most people who have been waiting have already seen what it's gonna be like and have already heard about the gameplay, controls, and graphics.

That's true, we've found out a lot about the game from everything you listed. BUT, nothing can compare to actually having someone playing it and giving their own impressions. That is why TwoTribes made a good decision here.

Not at all. Sites get their promotional codes upon the game's release. Though this means we might get 1-2 hours headstart from the other consumers, it doesn't mean that we get to hype the game up before Two Tribes releases the game. Most sites have already received Toki Tori's preview build and written a preview on it. I think as far as hype goes that's where Two Tribes will get it from. Sites "try it out" via preview builds. We don't receive the promo codes and the full retail game until its actually been released onto the App Store.

Hmm I wonder what's going on then... I came home expecting to download the recently approved game today and instead all I got to see about toki tori was an article about how they kept it under 10 mb and a statement that they will announce a release date soon. Yay I think at this point I'd rather be playing the game then reading stories about it the size of it.

thats not correct, at the site I work at, we get codes frequently this way. 2 codes we have gotten this way off the top of my head recently are IPSX, Rasta Monkey. codes can be generated and redeemed once the app has been approved which toki has. This way provides and easier way then dealing with provisional files. it's also the way I have released my two applications. It's fairly common. but think whatever you want to think. you are correct that provies are much more common, however when a game wants to build press that has already been releasedm this is a way they do it.

Well I stand corrected. I'm not the type to rebut and "think whatever I want to think" if I've been corrected. Unless I haven't been notified by my co-editors, we haven't received any promotional codes for Toki Tori just yet.

Thanks for your concern and interest in Toki Tori ;-) Allow me to elaborate on this. Since the iPhone market is flooded with new releases every day, it is important for us to be able to properly support the title when it has been released. So we are currently doing just that, making sure the launch is backed up my a little marketing and that our new Toki Tori website is online.
We made the same mistake with WiiWare as well; we soft launched it and expected the title to sell itself. We were wrong... So we obviously don't want to make that same mistake again and now allow for some time to properly promote the game. Get it under the attention of people out there etc.
Hope this makes any sense?

I think more devs would do themselves a favor by marketing their games more than they have, and in Toki Tori's case, they're doing it right in delaying the game a bit to do that. Look forward to seeing this.

I'm sad the game was delayed 20 more days, especially anticipating the "hatching soon" I'vee been seeing since February. I sure hope this pays off for you guys and the hype-machines doesn't produce negative results like it did for CJS.

Since we had not yet announced a solid release date, we weren't considering it a delay ourselves. But we now know it is of high concern to people, and we're very sensitive to this. We'll see what we can do about it.

smart move Two Tribes. I was thinking about this last night and I don't think a 3 week long promo period would've had all that positive of an impact on sales. People have already known and been waiting for this game for months, so to force them to wait too much longer after the game has already been approved might irritate a few. I suggest just keep strongly promoting the game after its release. There's already alot of people who have money saved in their accounts for this game. Don't make them wait too long, its no secret that its not easy for most to save credit in their itunes account for too long given the amount of other tempting games in the store.

Why so long? Just release it already. I doubt you will get much more promotion than you have already. Your golden time was long ago when the hype was large. I agree, everyone already knows about this game by now and the few who dont will hear about it quickly after its released. As far as the hype...the game has already been hyped for 2 months! After all the time its gonna start going from "hype" to an "I'm sick of waiting" feeling. Why punish all the people who have already been waiting for the game for so long by not releasing it yet? All in an attempt to create more hype from a small percentage who were born yesterday and haven't heard about the game yet? They'll catch on and buy too. That's how iphone apps work. You release a good app, people buy, they spread word on how good it is, and sales go up and up.

also, most apps dont even become famous or popular until after a few weeks. Zombieville wasnt very popular when it first came out, only people on here had it, but when enough people pushed it into the top 50 it rocketed to the top.

Let's not be so harsh to Two Tribes. Give it a rest, guys.
It's their game, they can do what they want with it. I do agree with most of the points on here, but you guys are starting to sound selfish.
Maybe by 'promo-time' they sent out final version to review sites for them to review it. Surely their promo-time isn't fully consisted of just making Toki Tori snacks and stories about how they got it under 10 mb. If it is, then... well... I dunno that'd be a bit of a waste for them because that's time they could've made sales with.

Hi guys!
I've been lurking for the last few days, and wanted to give you a little insight into how this all works. Perhaps you'll be able to better understand our actions after reading it.
We try to be open, but we cannot communicate everything that's going on. So even though you've only seen some blog entries about the figurines and such, you're not aware of everything that's happening behind the scenes to launch Toki Tori properly. There is a whole team of people working hard to ensure that everything is in place once the game launches. These things are interconnected, even with the game itself, so it's a bit more complicated than just putting the game on the AppStore.
A clear example would be tokitori.com. We actively encourage players from within the game to visit the website if they are in need of hints or tips, which we feel is a cool service to be able to offer to our customers. If you look at the website now, you'll see it is completely Wii-oriented, with not a single mention of the iPhone version. Should we make Toki Tori available now, there are going to be a lot of confused people who will be sent to a Wii site while playing an iPhone game.
There are lots of things like this, some of which we can't share due to NDA's and such, that factor in when making decisions. Rest assured that we are doing the best we can and next friday is a solid date at which you will be able to play Toki Tori.
Thanks for your time!
