Hello, this is one of my first posts. I know there probably have been tons of questions on this, but I have sorted through all of them and they still leave me confused.

I have a 8GB, second generation iPod touch. (2.2.1) I also have a powerbook G4...im not sure if that is important.

I have seen people's ipod's with themes, more than 9 pages, 5x5 columns, and what not and I really want to do that.. but you can only do that by jailbreaking right?

So how is this done? How DO you SAFELY and for FREE jailbreak? Im very confused.

Is there a website? Or software?

PS.. what are "Cydia" and "Winterboard"? Are these good or bad? Do they come after the ipod has been jailbroken?

I'm sorry if i shouldn't be asking this because it is a repeat...

Thanks so much.

It is greatly appreciated.

Ok
Try quickpwn
I sent a link in my PM
But http://quickpwn.com then go to downloads
Winterboard is where u control themes
You download themes from cydia
They come after jailbreak
All the features you see must be downloaded via cydia after u jailbreak
Before you jailbreak, remember to back up
Leave lotsa time to cuz it took my a few hours
And yes, the only way to get that stuff is jailbreak
It's not hard
After you jailbreak some good stuff are
Poof
Winterboard
Five by five dock
Themes for winterboard
Quickgold
Copy and paste
Backrounder
Mxtube
Chronus
Categorys

All those must be downloaded from cydia which comes included when u jailbreak
Hope I was clear
Oh and to get themes u must download them from cydia and then install by winterboard
Any other questions?

I was trying to jailbreak a 2G iPod but to no avail.

For your Cydia and Winterboard questions:

Cydia: just like the App Store except it has tons of other stuff like the programs that let you have more than 9 pages, etc.

Winterboard: the program that allows you to set themes. Download a theme from Cydia and then use Winterboard to set that theme to your iPod.

Sorry if that didn't help at all, I really wanted to jailbreak the 2G iPod but sadly I don't own a Windows computer (Mac all the way!) I believe the only way to jailbreak a 2G is through a Windows computer using quickpwn.

Doesn't support a 2G iPod...

Use TYTOOL which is for mac, google it.

ibelongintheforum doesnt know what the hell he is talking about, the only way to jailbreak the 2G IPOD which has a different exploit than the other models is qwith either TYTOOL which is for mac or QUICKFREEDOM which is for PC.

As for your questions, jailbreaking pretty much just makes the ipod open source and removes all of apple's limitations, so you can do anythign within the ipod's capabilties. Winterboard is what you use to apply themes, and cydia is like an appstore, although it doesn't only have apps, it also has tweaks, themes, etc..

Or you can do it manually which I did just yesterday. Only took me about an hour to jailbreak, restore, and all that great stuff. Make sure to follow every single step EXACTLY.

The guide can be found here:

quickpwn for the 2g has been released. I just did it and it took less than 5 minutes and no restore was needed.

You can get it at the official site (http://www.redsn0w.com/) if you have torrent setup (which seems to come from Piratebay of all places).

If you don't want to mess with that go to Ipod Touch Fans (http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=170810) and download it from there, they hosted the file on mediafire (?). There is a lot more jailbreak activity on their forums as well, though they can be.... immature.

Ok guys, I really want to jailbreak too,

What happends when you jailbreak your iPodtouch 2nd Gen, 8G??
Does it erase all my stuff including apps, mail, etc?
Does The iPodtouch crash a lot?
And I heard your iPod can sometimes not turn back on? Is there a way to fix that???
Is quickpawn good for my type of iPod and I use a HP Windows Vista laptop?
Can I use both, the Appstore and Cydia once it's jailbroken?
What happends if the new firmware update comes out and mine is jailbroken? How do I get rid of it or get the new version?
Please reply back or message me on what to do and how to do it.
Also try to get me into jailbreaking please.
I think I got more questions for later, thanks
One more for now.. Does it really take a short amount of time to jailbrake it with quickpawn??

Also email me please
Jordanrracer@aim.com
Thanks pls reply back

So many questions. I'll answer a few of them.

If you back up your data before jailbreaking, you'll keep all your apps, data, etc.

My iPod crahes a lot more than usual. On a few occasions, I have to resync my iPod to get it to work again. Despite that, I still feel it is worth it.

When you jailbreak it, it adds another "App Store" called Cydia. From here, you can download bunch of other stuff not available in the iPhone like search the whole phone, set a theme to your iPhone, or sort all your games/apps into folders called "Categories". If you have to restore it, then it does erase everything but all you have to do is restore your iPod with your backup files. Your iPod does not crash a lot, and that "turning off" thing is very rare and shouldn't happen. Quickpwn is good for your Windows, also QuickFreedom works with your computer also. You can use both App Store and Cydia harmoniously on your device. If the new firmware update comes out, all you have to do is wait until the devs release a new version of QuickPwn or you can just update it and it'll erase Cydia. There aren't many faults with jailbreaking, pretty much a win-win situation :)

How do I make a back up file and how do I use it?
If you can, can you please make EVERY step on how to do this?
Thanks

I have been looking into this jailbreak stuff and now feel I'm ready. I also have been looking into backup options and think I have a answer for you.

To back up normal stuff just sync your device. You can also preform a backup by right clicking your device in itunes and clicking backup. Neither of these options will backkup cydia apps but if you haven't jailbroken your device you won't have any.

Another thing to do is below which I got off another site but didn't note where it came from.

If you want to restore or you are thinking about jailbreaking and don't want to lose any of your game data, levels, scores, progress, then do this. First go into iTunes and backup your iPhone or iPod Touch like normal. Once it's all backed up, (for Vista) go to Start, Owner (or whatever your username is), AppData, Roaming, Apple Computer, Mobile Sync, Backup, then there should be a folder that has a lot of letters that don't make sense. Right click copy and paste it to your desktop or wherever you backup things up. To get into the AppData folder make sure you have "show hidden files and folders" enabled through the control panel. You want to copy this folder because sometimes if you restore or jailbreak it gets deleted and all of your stuff is in it like saved pictures, game data, settings, icon placement, Safari bookmarks, cookies, cache, and notes. If it ever does get deleted then just copy and paste the backup that you backed up into the backup folder and you will have everything back.

Now if you already have a jailbroken device then you should download aptbackup off of cydia. Then do follow the below instructions

1. You should first click “Backup” to backup the list of Cydia-installed applications.
2. Then sync your iPhone with iTunes to backup the list to your computer.
3. Next, upgrade & jailbreak your iPhone.
4. Once upgraded, install AptBackup via Cydia.
5. Sync your iPhone with iTunes to restore the list of Cydia-installed application.
6. Launch AptBackup and click “Restore” to reinstall all the applications

That way if you installed a 100 apps off of cydia you can get them back in minutes.

I haven't tried any of this yet. I'm just getting my crap in order before I try something stupid.

I just finished jailbreaking this thing using redsn0w. Quickfreedom wasn't working for me. Redsn0w seems a lot easier anyway.
