mmm.. all we'll say is that we think this is an experience you can really only have on the Apple's platform. While we haven't created a completely new genre I think we're offering a twist on something that's pretty tried and true.

We've been hard at work on the project so we apologize for the silence. The Beta is quickly coming together, we anticipate having the build ready in seven days.

Sorry for the general lack of info but we're not looking to hype the project until the time is right. I will say we are very excited tho and hope to translate that into a title many enjoy.

Hello Forum,

Just wanted to take a moment to announce a few of the things happening with Race to the Moon.

First, we're getting dangerously close to the release of our Beta. Thank you to all who showed interest and Thank you to Touch Arcade for allowing us to utilize this forum. To those who didn't get in on this one don't worry we'll have others.

The second thing is that it's official. Our paper work has been filed. Race to the Moon LLC exists in the eyes of the United States Government. Huge Congrats! to each of the members of the team.

Good Morning TA,

We would like to thank everyone for their continued interest in our project.

Due to number of Beta applications we received we weren't able to select everyone. Over 4x the number of applications we anticipated were sent in. Most importantly, for us at least, we were able to gather individuals from each of the demographics we were looking for. A true testament to the breadth of the TA community.

As for the build:
Timing in game development can sometimes be a very nebulous thing. Operating in a 'virtual office', as RttM does, only compounds this challenge. That said, we're still looking to get the build out to everyone this week. The exact date we can't say but, that's only because we don't know ourselves.

On that topic, I'd like to say that in my 12 years as a game designer, I haven't had the pleasure of working with two other individuals as talented or as driven. I think that level of passion is really going to show once everyone gets to see the title. It won't be long... promise.

I agree there are a lot of eager beta testers on TA. Despite the lack of details I am anxious to get this beta as the developers are very proud and fond of it. Plus the lack of information just makes me curious as to what it is.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the build is still a couple days away. A delay you can solely blame me for. Since I'm sure you'd rather me be working on the project I won't bore you with the details.. just know we're focused and want to make sure the game is running on all cylinders before sending it out.

Sometimes that means a couple more all nighters than previously planned. After having received last night's build I can say the effort has been completely worth it. :D

Small update on the build. We're probably going to take the entire weekend to nail everything down. This title is still very much a work in progress but for only being a three man crew, with each of us being separated by several time zones, we're cruisin'.

One is a schematic with things like 'launch pad being built, light beam pointed towards sky.' Possible video game-ish.

Secondly, and perhaps more applicable, is what looks like a likely candidate for an iPhone game :) Some planets, stars, and pathways. Interesting :)

There's a saying in game development that goes like this.

'Estimate however long you think a task is going to take you, then triple it. You'll then have about the proper amount of time it's going to take.' So in that regard we're about right on schedule. :D

Still, I know that doesn't fly well with everyone eagerly waiting and if I can be frank, it doesn't sit well with us either. Believe me when I say we want to get this game out as fast as possible. We're excited to see what everyone thinks. Saying that, we don't want to force it out the door either. We want to make sure this title absolutely screams once it gets into your hands. A goal, I can promise you, we're 100% focused on.

Woohoo! You fell right into my trap...well, ok so I tell myself that to make me feel better, but... confirmation! A third person game :D

Not a space shooter, not a sidescroller, not a puzzle game, but something unique :)

Can't wait to see what you have in store for us.

And while I am still oblivious to where a good screenshot is on the web, I did come across a great post of yours at some iPhone dev forums, I figure I might as well share it with the TA community to see what kind of philosophy you have, mrWalrus:

"Fact is the $.99 application has already destroyed market place. To lower the cost further would be absolutely suicidal.

To this point consumers have no issues with spending $10 on an application they perceive to be of good value. Look at the success of X-plane for example. That program sold enormous amounts right out the gate because people are starved for decent software. However if we continue to lower the price then even quality pieces of software such as X-plane won't sell.

It all comes down to consumer expectations. If we start pricing applications lower and lower then the consumer isn't even going to want to pay the mere pittance ($5-10) for the applications that are actually worth it.

Sadly most applications in the App store aren't even worth the 1's and 0's they're printed on. The rush by developers to just 'get something out' is drowning the consumer and making them apathetic to the store all together. At some point there is going to need to be a distinction from the very top as to what is quality and what is utter garbage. Don't get me wrong. I love the app store and all that it's been able to do. I applaud Apple for allowing everyone and anyone to get their software published but with over 1000 games already out who has the time to wade through all that just to find something that might be enjoyable for an evening or two.

I could surely go on and on about this subject to include examples from Sony and Microsoft's pricing of digitally distributed games but alas I'll just say this. The marketplace is capitalism at its finest and eventually developers will either get it or get out. Everyone needs to start focusing on quality rather than just getting something out. In the end your sales will thank you for it."

It's funny 'cos I'm hesitating at the mo for NFS, TW golf, 2XL, saving for star defence, ... and secretely hoping for price drops that I don't expect or absolutely wish for.

Getting back to things.. we did have a participant back out yesterday opening up one spot. While I'm inclined to go to our backlog of people I'd like to propose a small challenge. The first person who can find the screenshots (we just posted some new 'pre-Beta' shots on the 28th of May -- in addition to those that have been up since mid-April) will get in.

The one caveat is that if you find them please keep them to yourself. While we're pretty stoked with how everything is coming along, we're still in the process of getting everything to the level of quality you should come to expect from professional game developers (even if we are indie!).

So there we go.. the Race is on.
Please PM me when, if, you find the screens and I'll let you know if you're the first. :D


ps. Since I can only offer one Beta spot, any additional persons who find the shots will get sent a link to what the 'final' version of the 'vehicle' looks like.. which btw.. I posted another 'teaser' image at 'location 1'.

yeah.. I've been in the game industry for a while.

Thrill Kill was the first game I had the privilege of working on. However Wu-Tang was the first game I worked on that ever got released (over 10 years ago). I was responsible for all the blood, sound, and special effects.

I know this game is not finished but this game is going to be one of my favs soon. I like everything about it and the options are good. Don't see any audio (it would make it more intense) options but can't wait for more to come. Great job devs.

Happy Friday Forum,

Hope everyone who was interested in the E3 trade event this week saw something they liked. There were way more quality products on display than I could ever hope to write about, so I won't even attempt to do so.

One thing I noticed is that, other than in EA's booth, the iPhone had absolutely no presence on the show floor. I think this, especially with the leak of Apple's inclusion of a dedicated 3D chip in their phone, will change next year.

Finally, the real reason for this post is to publicly thank everyone for their feedback. The results have been invaluable.
