Looks very cool but I'll wait to see if that 2.99 is the lowered price or not.

I also noticed the English is a little off in the trailor so hopefully they get a proper translation done at some point

I checked the dev's website and it says $3.99>2.99 for the first 10,000 DL's.

This game is really, really cool! Highly polished presentation, very nice graphics (and cool drawing style with full-screen pics), the card trading and battles are fun, even the sound effents and music are nice. Only little drawback is the simplifies English language. Not spelling errors, more shortened sentences without filling words, but not disturbing at all. You always know what to do. You'll get into the game in seconds, it's totally simple to understand, the controls are precise and on the spot whereever you tap. It also seems that there is a huge ammount of content in this game, it goes from some places around a town with some towns in one region (lands) and five different lands overall.

You'll basically start out as a young adventurer with just a few magic cards and have to become a true card master by fighting monsters, getting more cards and a better and better deck. There is always enough to do and you can chose in which order you fulfill your quests. You'll get quests by persons or your Card Master Guild and after obtaining them, you'll venture out to batlle monsters in card fights. This quicky becomes strategic, because you'll always have to fit your deck to all the different monsters to be successful in battle against them. There are a lot of cards to aquire, and as the game progresses, you are able to use stronger cards until you have the cards which bestow you with great power. There are not only attack, but also supporting cards.
Cards have attack values and special abilities and may add points to your HP.

Conclusion of these first impressions?

IMHO, this game is a winner.

When you loved Sword & Poker or other games of that style, when you're a RPG freak or love collectible card games, try this game.

The game is sold for an introductory price at the moment.
Price is, from everything I saw 'til now, absolutely reasonable.

DeckMake Fantasy is very approachable, super cute, well-paced, and it looks great on the iPad. For those that have played and liked Guns&Pirates, its by the same company.

Your adorable little adventurer explores one of five overworld zones that are broken up by a grid. Each cell of the grid contains a central town and then several outlying areas that are exposed to you when talking to a member of the town guild. Guild members send you on mini-quests that consist primarily of kill monster x, at the beginning of the game, at least. Before traveling to an encounter, you can purchase cards from the shopkeeper, if you have enough gold to do so. There are quite a large number of cards in total, but you choose up to 20 to bring to battle. Each card allows for a new tactic in combat, and oftentimes you buy more that one of the same card, so that they are sure to come up in the random draw during battle.

Battles take place from a side view with teeny-tiny little monsters doing their idle animations and a some effects here and there, or sometimes larger, more menacing creatures. You are always warned what you're getting yourself into and you can even escape mid-battle if you are in over your head.
Pleasant medieval music plays throughout and the whole affair is just loaded with charm.

I really like this game for it's presentation and simplicity, even though it can be a bit of a grind, at times. Personally, I'll be able to get my money's worth out of it quite easily and I feel like it may be a hidden gem.

Best is, you can play it for hours or just a quick battle while on the train. Almost no loading times make this possible.

Thanks for the impressions Vovin. This game is pretty dope, I'm playing it right now. I can tell by the UI it was made specifically for the iOS. The story and setup of everything seems to be well-designed so far.

The goal of the game is straight forward, it's all about acquiring the better cards and adding the ones you choose to your deck. You take on different enemies but have to fight the weaker enemies first to get enough gold so you can purchase new cards from merchants in each area. Once you have acquired some good cards you can take on tougher foes and be successful. There is a "guild" to go to that supplies info on the different monsters in the game. The world/map seems to be pretty big and I think the gameplay is engaging. Appears to be plenty of strategy and depth. Some cool looking enemies too.

I like it, I say the game is worth it.

The game is huge. The first land alone has 15 zones with a few locations to fight each - and there are 5 lands. Must be a few hundred locations.

I am already thinking about making my deck better in various ways and different strategies... and the enemies look cool. Quite some nice big battle animations, too. Lightning all over the screen and stuff.

Sometimes you'll have to grind a bit for a few extra coins (to stack up better cards), but this also gives you the opportunity to try different deck builds against the same enemy, to test how good it works. When you have more different cards, that is.

Can you give a description on the card battle mechanics?
Playing Shadow Era + ME:CE + homework = not much time for games. Need description before sinking both time and money into this. You can tell I'm interested right :D

Need player description and experience as I do entirely rely on creator's instructions.

this isn't like Shadow Era (which is like Magic the Gathering)

it's more like an RPG that uses cards for your attacks, so it's kind of random what you get dealt.

this game is awesome, so glad i bought it. thanks for bringing this to my attention freedog!

Well, the first land and the monsters are getting a bit repetitive, but it becomes much better later. I think the first land is held easy that you can learn the mechanics and build up your first good card stock.

But its really cute how the boy after a successful battle runs back to town with a big bag full of gold. Made me laugh a few times.

I'm quite finicky about the gameplay mechanics (much more so then others) when it comes to card games. So I really want to get a comprehensive idea of the mechanics before settling on a purchase (Shadow Era hooked me, $23.99 to them :p)

The thread title piqued my interest, decided to get it after reading the comments in this thread. Thought it wouldn't be out on my local app store since their other games weren't released here too, so I bought it using a gift card, after playing it for awhile it was out locally too. Oh well. The game's pretty fun, I'm less than 30 minutes into it so I only have a few cards but the game will probably get more interesting as you progress. Translation kinda seems like a Google translate, but as mentioned, it gets the job done.

So far the very flat/static damage system is making the game pretty bland. Just a little bit of math to balance out the HP of your deck, the damage the cards put out, and how many cards you want in your deck (to increase the chances of drawing the more expensive cards, which like most CCGs are usually better cards).

I have mixed feelings about the the interface. I love the pixel art/fonts. The deck config screen is easy to navigate and use. The card flip animation really slows things down when trying to navigate the various windows in the game. I don't need the guild clone telling me in every town how to kill each type of mob in their area. It's also redundant to have a "Map" option when you can just tap the zone to see what mob is there when you are ready to hunt, especially since you already find out where everything is because you have to talk to the guild clone to make the zones "active".

So far this isn't even a fraction as good as Sword and Poker because it just feels like an elementary formula of balancing numbers and then just running if RNG fails to draw you decent cards...having to run less of course as you pick up better cards. I'm really hoping some cards have more complex effects as the game goes on because dots, redraws, and DD attacks aren't very deep.

I strongly recommend putting on the Quick option in the Settings as it bypasses some of the fluff animations when travelling/hunting.

You have a deck of 20 cards, each one provides a certain amount of HP (sum of which is your total HP), and damage. You start the battle with 4 cards and use 1 each turn. It's kinda like the equipment/skill system of the game, you get equipment cards like swords which adds a decent amount of HP/damage, spell cards which add lesser HP but deals more damage. There's also skill cards, so far I've only seen one but I presume they give bonuses in some way. Some cards will also have special abilities like poison, increased damage etc.

Actually, I'd say his response does answer the question, but only if you've played card-based RPGs (something like Baten Kaitos comes to mind). This game isn't a TCG at all. Well, I guess it could be if you stripped out the resources and permanents and made everything an instant. Basically, you make a "deck" of 10-20 cards and you use one every turn (out of a hand of 4). Many of the cards are just "do X damage", but there are other types too.

Well, it's basically what's going on in the video, you pick cards to use and get the enemy to 0 HP. I've only fought like 3 enemies so far, 1 of them only has a regular attack, the others have that plus a attack charge-up skill for one, and a status-cancelling effect for another. Early on the battles aren't quite as interesting obviously, so I can't really help you out there. XD

Fill your deck with about 10 Maditation and 10 Firewalls. 95% of the time you fight a giant worm the cards will appear in the right amounts so you can win. Use one then the other.. repeat. I beat all the giant worms on the map this way as quick as possible.

I just spoke with the king and now I'm going after the harpies. This game does get repetitious because of the grinding/fighting the same enemies too often, but its addictive enough to keep playing.

Mine was something like 8-10 firewalls, 4 pass (for the HP), and the rest broadswords. The easiest deck would be something like 12 firewalls, 8 pass, but you want to save some of you gold to get a jump start on cards in Secondaria because the cards there make the ones from Firsta obsolete. For example, Firewall is 5 HP, 40 dmg, but there's a 10 HP, 60 dmg spell.

In thirdonia you had to kill a seiren to meet the king.

And i've just found out an awesome combo :

Play Heavy boomerang (100 dam after 3 turn delay), then Power attack (Next attack damage * 3) and a physical attack. Thanks to this combo, your boomerang AND your physical attack get the bonus of Power attack ^^

Edit : My god, forthia is really harder than thirdonia ^^'

Great game, glad I picked it up.

The best comparison I can give is the Mega Man: Battle Network series, minus the twitch/action reflexes. There is also no maze/exploration.

You build your deck out of 'cards'. When the battle starts, there are four cards dealt. Each turn you draw another. The cards are generally simple: direct damage, DoT (damage over time), redraw all cards, boost defense, etc... You go from town to town, and get 'quests' to kill monsters.

The game IS a bit of a grind, but it's about what I expected. You grind through the first zone, slowly building you deck. When you're powerful enough to get through the zone, you move into the next zone. In the next zone, you make a lot more money and the cards are a lot more powerful. You slowly phase out your old cards, and add to new ones -- rinse & repeat.

My description makes it sound kind of boring, but I consider it fun in the same vein as Game Dev Story or 'Sims' games. It's a slow/predictable progression, but fun because of collection aspects -- in this case, collecting cards. Sadly, cards are purchased rather than 'won' (I like games where you win random cards through battling) but the system works well enough. It's a very casual game that doesn't require too much thinking, which is great when you're on the go. I bought Order & Chaos at the same time as this, but gravitate towards this being it's not so involved.

I don't know to what extent customization is actually important (eg: do you ever need to customize your deck, or just throw in your most powerful cards?) but I'm enjoying it so far. I'm currently in the second of 4 or 5 zones.

In that regard, the 5th zone is a bit of a letdown since it forces you to use the strongest cards in large quantity to win.

3rd and 4th zones however are quite interesting and you can really try out a few different strategies, having to balance your deck between pure DPS and damage reduction.

This said, a friend of mine won against the last boss with a pure, high HP "warrior" build of blades and attack up, and I did it with a total wizard build, low HP and negative effects.

It is not the richest or the deepest system obviously, but it allows for some light strategy in deck building.

This game seems so cool! I would definitely get, but does it really not work on the older generation iPod Touch? I have a 2nd generation so that is like the only thing holding me back..

I have a 2nd gen Touch with 4.1 OS, and the game works fine for me. Go for it. :)

Do like the game but wish it had more depth and involved more strategy. For instance, It would be nice if the fire based spells got a damage boost when facing the undead, or the wind magic did more against flying etc...This would make choosing your 20 cards more about strategy and less about just picking the most powerful cards every time.

I'm currently at Fifthia, and I already aquired Salamander's ashes. However, I can't get the game to proceed because the guy in the guild won't say anything new and the king still says the same thing. What do?

Edit: Nevermind, I didn't know you needed a bunch of Salamander's ashes to proceed.

I'm in the fourth land and finished his Iron Golem mission.
Now he asks me to kill all the Poison Worms.
JUST GREAT.
I already did that while mopping off the stupid golems which the game does not seem to notice.
Now I'm stuck and utterly pissed after spending some hours on this game.

I should have rather spent more time with my guitar instead.

well.. u can try talk to the sexy barmaid again...
it will reset the missions for the town.

Btw, this game does not need strategy at all. Just grinding and grinding until u can afford the better cards.. It is almost impossible to lose..
I am glad i did not end up buying this game... :p

How do you beat the final boss? (dragon something)?

I have approx 1200 HP and he has over 3k, I use the dragon slayer on him with the 3x multiplier but he always knocks me down before i get him.
What kind of deck is good for him?

Thanks

If you don't mind me asking: how do you know what the game is like if you didn't end up buying it?

To beat him, I had a full magic deck, with 11 earthquakes, 1 magical spring, 4 pass, 1 burst, 1 dragon slayer, and 2 snowblind. The trick was to get the snowblind asap (pass and magical spring should help enough) and grind away his HP while I was lining earthquakes and the occasionnal burst + pass. He only touched me once, which is good with only about 1000 hp.

For a sword build, You still have to bring some Pass in order to have more HP. Maybe a tower shield or two...

Well, it gives a reason to replay the campaign with a more focused approach, but it's pretty thin. Any future updates on the horizon?

Forget Pass and all the other crap. Don't even buy Magic cards. They are useless and give less HP.
Just buy 3-4 War Cry, 3-4 Power Attack, 5-8 Dragon slayer
The rest, put whatever you want for you deck. Just make sure you have about 1300-1400HP.

First play - War Cry
Second play - Power Attack
Third play - Dragon Slayer

This combo does 1800 damage. Few more hits and Dragon is dead.

This game is pretty tight except for all the poor English. Also, if you get a text or call, forget about whatever you were doing because the game restarts from the main menu when you come back. Other than that it's actually really fun.

Does this game feature Mermaids? I hope so because the game looks like fun but I only buy games with mermaids.

Almost finished the game last night, just need to get a few more Dragon Slayer cards to make the attempt.

Does anybody know how to best utilize Burst? It doesn't seem to be a sum of your other cards' HP or attack powers...

here's a cheating combo for everyone

-power attack + any kind of weapon (dragon slayer) = massive damage
-card that boost physical attack for 3 turns (forgot the name) + power attack + dragon slayer = instant 1800 dmg

low level combos

1st turn = cast boomerang
2nd turn = cast another boomerang
3rd turn = cast power attack (boomerang hits end of turn for 300)
4th turn = attack with a sword, 3x damage (boomerang hits end of turn for another 300)

massive damage.

high level combos

1st turn = cast war cry
2nd turn = cast power attack
3rd turn = dragon slayer hits for 1800 damage
4th turn = dragon slayer hits for 600.

finished the game, got all the best cards. and practically done with the game for now
