wuzup developers, some month ago i've read about this little cutie.
http://www.davidoreilly.com/2008/08/ihologram
this guy has the knowlege to put the gaming experience into a whole new level.
but untill now only guy tried to do something with it. he made Mach Dice , a simple little dice simulator. but the effect was working. it wasnt perfect, but nothing is in the early days.
so if you never heard about i suggest you go check that link on top.
here is a video of mach dice to proove the real thang:

wow that's awesome as. So it only works on a small range of viewing angles?

As far as mach dice goes, there's already an app that does almost the exact same thing called MotionX Dice. It has the realistic physics and also the shadow responds to the accelerometer. I don't know if this guy is involved with MotionX or not, but that Mach Dice video looks a lot like MotionX Dice.
MotionX Dice is also free so just d/l it to check it out if you're curious.

It looks as though it's the same accelerometer angle response I've seen in a number of other apps (MotionX Dice/Poker, StressToy, Wooden 3D Labyrinth, etc.) just tuned to the point where the shifting of the angle is matched to the proper angle of the device.

Wow I'm amazed!
Thats really impressive.
Good job to the dev!

Well that is an updated video from when i last saw it, it was just a concept video, now it looks like he's actually coded it. Yea some other apps use the same techniques, but this demo seems to be the coolest one I have seen. I would pay $1 for that easily...

ngmoco used that in WordFu as well.

wait, if the device is laid like that on the table, shouldn't the gyro be unable to detect any rotation unless there's gravity involved?
I think you guys got have been had!

Maybe his table is slightly angled?
That looks about as real as it gets....

I think so, I tried Mach Dice, works great as long as you have the device in your hand, but once you put it down on a flat tabletop, rotate as you might, them dice won't move.

I dunno, usually when I rotate something in an app (the score on Quick Turn, for example), it always takes a second or two for the app to rotate the numbers. There's always a lag. This seems a little to smooth, and yeah, the horizontal rotation's weird.

To his defence, I tried Mach Dice, and the response is very smooth.

That demo is indeed impossible on current hardware: it's a mockup of what COULD be done someday. I'm not sure how the mockup was made, maybe just by having the rotations pre-coded and moving the phone with his hand at the right time?
The current iPhone/iPod can't detect rotations in that plane--BUT, with gyroscopes or magnetic compasses, it could be one day!
There's a cool mockup somewhere of an augmented reality game for iPhone that takes things even further: feeding live video from the camera, and making it look like the character is in 3D on the actual desk.

If his table is slanted during the demo how could it not be possible??? I could see if yea it was actually flat but i believe the table has somewhat of a slant while he's doing the demo... Then again he still says it's a concept... Am I the only one that thinks this is freaking awesome?!

It is awesome :) And yes, a slightly slanted table could do something with the accelerometer (with that precision? maybe) but I recall reading about this demo a few weeks ago, and IIRC it's not using the accelerometer.
There are some credible rumors lately that the next gen phone will support rotation on that axis, though, so don't give up hope!

He says if any dev's are interested in the coding aspect to contact him. I'm sure that there is a Dev here who could take the art and code it up fairly quickly?
I'm serious I would pay the $1 if it looks that good...

maybe he is using the camera in some way, detecting a rotating pattern even a move ?? ! That might be an idea also.

So far I think this one does a good job of the "3D" effect...
http://appshopper.com/entertainment/stress-toy
Plus it's free, so if you want to see how it could be implemented...
So what other apps do this?... If somone could list for me what they know of?... Thx. ;)

Hmmm.. interestingly I came across this iPhone "hologram" on the Internet and trying to following the link for more information led me to a potentially dangerous website.. (thank god I have a MAC)
I don't remember exactly where, but I would advise caution...

Pretty impressive, I'd pay for it as a proof of concept as well.

Some facts:
- Mach (Kobayshi) was the first to do this on an iPhone. Others have made use of the idea, and Wordfu actually licensed it from Mach (who's been on these boards, and recently released BoomDice).
- David O'Reilly has admitted that it was a mock-up; no slanted tables, etc. However, as someone pointed out, the rumored (certainly true, coming this summer) new iPhone has the ability to detect absolute heading, which makes this possible in the next few months.
- People have created augmented reality for the iPhone, which may become more common with the new hardware this summer. See here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0bitKDKdg0) for an example. This is probably the way to continue the trend.
If any devs are serious about implementing something in this direction, feel free to PM me to start a discussion, as I've spoken to some of the people involved in this idea and I'm happy to offer suggestions/ideas (I'm not a dev, but I'm always happy to help a good idea get even better!).

Hey whoever makes the cat demo I got a dollar for you, and I'm sure about 10,000 other people do to. Let's see it!!!

Nice! Of course a lot of the real 3D effect seen on camera is lost in person--when you have two eyes that expect stereoscopic vision. But the rainbow holo effect is a nice touch!

yes, really nice! i thought about those real life holograms when i started this thread. seems someone allready made it :) good to see. in fact the ballerina looks incredible! virtually 3d :) great!
imagen a platform runner only in these rainbow colors, but 3d :D
could be a nice game. and something very different from all others.
and thanks i didnt know motion dice updated with the thread thang, also didnt know kungfu and all those others use it allready. good to see somebody tries.

Hey, I'm the guy that did Mach Dice. As it happens, I'm working on a hologram app now and blogged a bit about it (http://www.machwerx.com/2009/04/29/secret-project-holograms/). It'll be a simple little app to add a bit of depth to your photos.
I can confirm pretty much everything that was mentioned in this thread. The original accelerometer doesn't detect compass orientation so you can't quite do an app that does the cat video thing, yet. Think of the accelerometer as an arrow that points down in the direction of gravity. If you turn your iPhone around that axis, the arrow doesn't move so you can't detect it. Still, the effect is pretty compelling even with just tilting in the other two axes.
Btw, what kind of features would people want to see in a hologram creation app? How important is the rainbow effect?

whats a "hologramm creation" app ?
some app the creates hologramm on the fly?
from what source? with what material?
prerendered modable 3d objects?
well i think the rainbow effekt is somehow very important.
if you look at the ballerina, it feels just like her foot comes out of the screen.
with textures it maybe wouldnt look like this.
but im pretty sure its possible to create the "room like" effekt without rainbow.
but the rainbow makes those reall ife hologramm pictures im sure everybody knows about.
