I keep this game because fencing! touchy85 Well-Known Member Jan 21, 2015 1,616 1 38 #2 touchy85, Jul 19, 2016 Subscribe to the TouchArcade YouTube channel I don't really care about fencing, but I like this game. It has a decent amount of depth with different fighting styles and gear with extra stats. The animations look great. There's PVP and a campaign and the controls are really responsive. Blackharon Well-Known Member Mar 15, 2010 978 0 16 Game Designer for Ludia Canada http://www.clermonta.wix.com/gamedesign #3 Blackharon, Jul 19, 2016 Agreed - the animations are incredibly fluid, even at later levels when there's less pause between the actions. It's kinda gorgeous! LordShad0wz Well-Known Member Nov 19, 2014 4,286 1 38 #4 LordShad0wz, Jul 19, 2016 I played and won the first match. It asked me to log into Facebook. I successfully logged in and the game showed my winnings. I clicked next and bam the game crashed to the desktop. I restarted the game and it erased everything. I went through the tutorial again. I won the first match. I logged into Facebook. It said I was already connected. Bam. I crashed to the desktop. I restarted the game. Again all my progress was deleted. I won't be playing until the game is fixed. I'm attempting to email the developers. I'm obviously holding off on my rating until I hear or don't hear back from them. iPhone 6 running iOS 9.3.2 Billy squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,548 1,077 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #5 squarezero, Jul 20, 2016 I don't do Facebook, so I haven't run into this problem. As someone who spent a few years obsessed with foil fencing, I think the game is pretty damn good. Controls, visuals, animation, they are all top-notch -- the whole thing feels really polished. More important, it feels like fencing -- the action is fast, skill-based, and perfectly paced. As a side note, the game is free to play, but it doesn't feel like it, at least so far. No timers, no intrusive offers. You bet that I'm dropping some coin on this, though -- it's worth it. Blackharon Well-Known Member Mar 15, 2010 978 0 16 Game Designer for Ludia Canada http://www.clermonta.wix.com/gamedesign #6 Blackharon, Jul 20, 2016 Ugh foilist. Epee is where it's at! I've gotten far enough to unlock new blades and now my one minor gripe is my fencer holding a saber uses it like a foil. (that and the end of the saber is taped? I need to play it on the iPad to confirm) squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,548 1,077 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #7 squarezero, Jul 20, 2016 Yeah - epee was always too chaotic for me . I just got my first style -- "aggressive." I like how the game is adding depth without overcomplicating the action or the controls. In real fencing you would have an entire arsenal of moves, feigns and attacks, which seems impossible to replicate in a video game (especially on mobile). By creating limited sets that you can choose, though, the game recreates how marches usually go -- you read your opponent and use a limited amount of techniques to match their style. In any event, there seems to be a surprising amount of depth to the game. It's unfortunate if sabre plays like foil and epee -- I was looking forward to some slashing action. LordShad0wz Well-Known Member Nov 19, 2014 4,286 1 38 #8 LordShad0wz, Jul 20, 2016 I never played fencing but to be honest I always wanted to. So I went and deleted the game. I reinstalled the game. Went through the tutorial. I successfully signed into Facebook and made it through the USA and won and now I'm on to Europe. I think I just had a wonky install. As to the game. As I've never played fencing I have to say it's pretty fascinating. Now that I'm onto the second country the moves are different. The game actually walks you through what you need to know. The controls work flawlessly which really helps. When I lose I feel like it's my fault and not because of the game. As to the monetization I would have already spent some money to send the development team some support but they have the purchase of equipment very strict. So far I've only been able to buy a helmet and I already had way more than enough currency earned to buy it. Maybe they need to tweak that a bit. When I'm given the opportunity to make a purchase I will. I like this game. It's a really good experience. The gameplay is designed really well. I love the artwork. There's no lag issues or anything of that sort. I like the Facebook integration. The only thing I would request is iCloud save support since it appears there is only consumable IAP. Billy adin Well-Known Member Nov 24, 2008 170 4 18 New Mexico #9 adin, Jul 20, 2016 Does it play like a schlager? (SCA historical combat) fabianb Well-Known Member Nov 1, 2014 1,009 0 36 #10 fabianb, Jul 20, 2016 How does asynchronous multiplayer even work with a game like this?? squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,548 1,077 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #11 squarezero, Jul 20, 2016 Without going too far off track here, I'm not that familiar with SCA rules (though I know schlagers from a series of historical prints I inherited from my father-in-law), but I can say that sabre fencing is not that different, if way more athletic. Both epee and foil are exclusively stabbing weapons -- sabres allows slash hits. Most sabre fencers I've known have had a particular appreciation for neck slashes, but anywhere in the upper body counts. The reason I called epee fencing chaotic is that there is no right of way (in foil and sabre you "claim" an attack by extending your arm first) and hits count everywhere, even in your opponents foot. In practice, it makes for very fast paced bouts and "trick" hits. By comparison, foil and sabre seem way more civilized. Extremely polished with simple controls but strategic gameplay. I know almost nothing about fencing so it's been fun learning about the different weapons & styles. It's unfortunate that there's an energy timer, though. It's a real turn off. But I'm enjoying this enough that I'll keep it installed for now. Really good stuff. NaughtHere Well-Known Member Nov 14, 2010 87 0 0 #14 NaughtHere, Jul 24, 2016 Why does it take so long to load PvP opponents? Sometimes they don't even load, it just sits there with the spinning circle. Very frustrating. icoker Well-Known Member Mar 26, 2013 652 10 18 #15 icoker, Jul 27, 2016 How do you unlock those "unlock by pvp" items? NaughtHere Well-Known Member Nov 14, 2010 87 0 0 #16 NaughtHere, Jul 27, 2016 Yeah, I have no idea. I'm level 53 and have played maybe a hundred PvP matches and none of that equipment is unlocked, even the low level stuff. Blackharon Well-Known Member Mar 15, 2010 978 0 16 Game Designer for Ludia Canada http://www.clermonta.wix.com/gamedesign #17 Blackharon, Jul 28, 2016 There's a meter at the bottom of the PVP mode. Fill the meter within the allotted time and get one of the pvp rewards. So far I've gotten only the mask... the meter seems pretty tight unless you win (nearly?) every match! Anyone else find redoublement to be overpowered to the point of being broken? The AI doesn't handle that well at all! NaughtHere Well-Known Member Nov 14, 2010 87 0 0 #18 NaughtHere, Jul 29, 2016 That can't be it because I've filled that meter many times. In fact, I'm looking at a completely full PvP meter right now, with 40 minutes to go and no unlocked equipment. Blackharon Well-Known Member Mar 15, 2010 978 0 16 Game Designer for Ludia Canada http://www.clermonta.wix.com/gamedesign #19 Blackharon, Jul 29, 2016 What is that last object on the meter? When I got the mask it was the equipment icon. (You must log in or sign up to post here.) Show Ignored Content Share This Page Tweet Your name or email address: Do you already have an account?
