Methinks you really don't need to bump it after 8 minutes and then 12 more. Basically, what sk8terdude50 said.
You may have to restore it if it comes down to that. Most likely just sync it or do a 2 button restart, sometimes that works.
Have you jailbroken it recently? Is it a newer iPod Touch? If so, you have what is called a tethered jailbreak. This means that if the battery runs out, or you turn the device off, you need to hook it up to a computer to boot it back up.
If you have a jailbroken iPod touch 3G then you're scrooged, but according to your profile you have an iPod touch 2G, I suggest holding down the power and hold button for either 30 seconds or until the apple logo shows up.
