"Instantly, addictively fun" -MacLife Karateka will charm you with its classic love story set in feudal Japan. Fight to save the lovely Mariko from the evil warlord Akuma and reunite her with her True Love! "For those who remember the original, the new Karateka must not be missed. And to those with no prior knowledge: you have an excellent, new experience in store." -Touch Arcade (4.5 stars) "With a stunning makeover and simplistic but compelling action, this terrific update brings Karateka into the 21st century in style." -Cnet **** BREATHTAKINGLY CINEMATIC From PRINCE OF PERSIA creator Jordan Mechner, the original side-scrolling karate classic comes to new life on iPad and iPhone with art by Jeff Matsuda (The Batman) and music by Grammy-winning composer Christopher Tin (Civilization IV). FANTASTIC FIGHTING Easy to grasp yet challenging to master, the rhythm-based karate combat tells a simple human story. Three suitors vie to save Mariko: A fearsome Brute, a noble Monk, and her brave True Love. HIGHLY REPLAYABLE "A brilliant life system that delivers variety in the gameplay as well as incredible replay value; you won't want to stop playing until you rescue Mariko as her True Love and see the storybook ending." - Touch Arcade PUNCH THE HAWK! "Fun for those of us who played the original on an Apple II, Commodore 64, or even an NES, but younger gamers will still appreciate the unique style and easy-to-learn gameplay." -ArsTechnica "Karateka is widely considered to be one of the greatest 8-bit home computer games ever created. It wasn't a game so much as a living story that you, the player, were a part of... The new Karateka legitimately feels like it might be what Mechner's original idea would have been, if then were now." - Touch Arcade *IMPORTANT* Karateka requires iPhone 4S or newer, iPad 2 or newer, or iPod Touch (5th generation). Anyone here have any impressions? Don't want to buy a game like Batman arkanoid, which is huge disk space wise but just average at best. Got enough huge disk space games I can't load. Also, does this game play well on hdmi tv? If so, I'll get it in a heartbeat. But in the end, will probably buy it cause I like martial art themed games, but this game had such mixed reviews and such a huge disk size, someone convince me to buy it please. Is it worth my buck? Enough said! Haha iPadisGreat Well-Known Member Dec 10, 2012 2,391 0 0 #6 iPadisGreat, Jan 7, 2013 Trying to download Karateka, but App Store refuses by complaining of insufficient space. I played the demo for the PlayStation version and really liked it. I'm curious how the iOS version works. I played the original back in the day and it was one of my favorites so I'm definitely going to get this. One tap action/fighting game with great worth. Appletini Well-Known Member Jan 8, 2011 2,564 0 0 Ankh-Morpork #9 Appletini, Jan 7, 2013 It's certainly worth a dollar, but do note that it is also a very, very basic game (unnecessarily so), and a step backwards for a platform that is trying to prove that it can bring more to the table than Angry Birds and Cut the Rope. Not directing this at anyone in particular, but I'm also pretty sure we don't need insecure people taking pre-emptive potshots at those who haven't bought into the "Emperor's New Clothes" of this release. Rule of thumb is to have free space on your device equal to or greater than twice the size of the app listed in the store. Karateka is listed as 675MB, so you'll want around 1.35GB free. mrbiggles Well-Known Member Jul 3, 2012 3,691 0 0 Like retired USA #10 mrbiggles, Jan 7, 2013 The C=64 days were fun nightc1 Well-Known Member Oct 19, 2012 4,362 0 0 AL #11 nightc1, Jan 7, 2013 My main concern with this game is its simplistic gameplay. Listen in the music for the number of beats and tap in sequence to deflect incoming attacks ... from what I read that's the whole game. I can get over the storage space hump... I tend to have space for one or two big games. I'm just not sure it's compelling enough for my limited game time. Seems if you're on the fringes of what's needed to run the game then it's a mess. They need to fix the listing for the game because in the requirements it says compatible with iPhone 3GS and up, iPodTouch 3rdGen and up, and iPad. But the description they say it requires an iPhone 4S and up, 5th Gen iPodTouch & iPad2 and up. So I'm the only one in my house that could even play it and even then a lot of the reviews on the appstore say it's buggy and not optimized very well for the iPhone5 and other devices. Guess they cheated a bit in the porting process and used some buggy and heavily bloated middleware? Whatever the case right now it's not worth it to me... but it is a high profile game so I feel fine reporting it since Brad posted a story on TA about it. If it was some no name game that had gone free I would have downloaded, played, and then reported if it seemed worth peoples times. (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
