I'd go with the Google Sheets and Google Docs apps for basic Excel and Word-style functions. They're pretty universal now as a format. And they're free, but I'd recommend them anyway.
I think you can use the official Word and Excel apps for free these days. Also, I think Pages and Numbers can use Word and Excel docs.
