We started statistics based on 'Customer Also Bought' references in the iTunes. You can check Top-1,000 Most Referred Apps and download Top-10,000 and Top-45,000 charts in zip archives.

    Check it here >>

We have found that about 45 000 apps can be reached by 'customers also bought' links starting from top-100 paid/free games

I'm slightly surprised to see Ground Effect at number 8!
I would suspect the rather large number of free downloads I had a few weeks ago but there are other apps that had way more free downloads and appear much lower on the list.

I guess the real question is how do Apple allocate these referrals?

This part of the "how it works" description might be the key:

"Weight of referral apps -- references from higher ranked apps is much more valuable than references from unknown apps"

Maybe Apple only allows a certain number of apps to refer to another app. This way a major app might have thousands of 'referral candidates' while an app like Ground Effect might only have a few hundred. If these are then allocated at random it could be that multi-million sellers get a lot of referrals from insignificant apps while Ground Effect's shorter candidate list included a lot of much cooler apps.

Or maybe it just reflects the awesome taste of those that bought the game :)

Nice, thanks for doing this. Any more insights into Apple's original algorithm?

I just wish Apple would add an option to use the same format on the iPhone version as on the desktop iTunes, i.e. top 5 "also bought" apps listed on the main app page for that particular app, instead of all mixed up in one big list.

Thanks for posting! I'm confused though - why is it in alphabetical order of game title from 313 onwards?

Also, can you repost the earlier charts so we can make some sort of comparison?

I think we can not repost old statistics, but if it is interesting for developers we will update it more often...

Pam, I have a copy of the stats before it was updated.

    Top 10k March

The current updated list consists of iPad only and universal apps. Not sure why this is so it's hard to compare to the old stats.

I have an app on this chart in the mid 20s and I make $10/day.
