This guy is well talented. Worked at Koei for 1.5yrs after graduating, and already quit his job to develop for himself. His previous two games were really well polished and really good fun too. I'm really happy to buy this latest game from him, because I have full confidence in his abilities. He even attempted to diversify his "Red/Blue" universe into typing-genre (like Typing of the dead) but dropped it when he realised that it wasn't fun. So this guy sure knows when to continue and when to drop a dead rock. :)

You guys can ask me anything you want about the new game. :)

you might need to be a bit patient waiting for a gameplay video, my timeframe puts that about 2 weeks out.

I hope you guys have as much fun playing it (before Christmas!) as I did making it!

No questions yet. But I just wanna say that it looks terrific, and I wish you the best of luck in finishing it up, and to have a quick approval process so we can all enjoy it, which I'm sure we will. Great work!

I really love the design (Blue Defense and Blue Attack have pretty amazing design too IMO). Looking forward to playing!

I was wondering when you would come up with another great game. I can't wait to see this in action. I haven't listened to the podcast yet so these questions may be answered there.
Is there a campaign and skirmish modes?
How many units does each side have?
Will I finally get to pay Blue back for the earlier two games?:p:D

We're working on it, but for now there will be local Bluetooth / Wifi multiplayer. You can actually mix and match, if the host has both wifi and bluetooth enabled.

There is a campaign that will unfold in 4 episodes. The first release has Episode 1, which is made of 6 story-driven levels with stylized cutscenes.

There is a challenge mode, with four different challenge types - 16 levels total. One of the challenge types is "conquest", which is a fight against AI opponents in maps where the odds are against you. :)

There will also be local multiplayer, and I'm aiming to have 10-15 maps for that, with different game styles - regular maps, close quarters, different resource distribution, and other things to alter strategy.

Red is the simpler faction. The unit types are:

    Base
    Foundry
    Carrier
    Battleship
    Harvester
    Cruiser

Blue has more units, but some with similar function:

    Base
    Foundry
    Carrier
    Destroyer
    Harvester
    Cruiser
    Monitor
    Scout
    Maintenance Vehicle

Foundries and bases build stuff, and the blue carrier can also build cruisers and scouts. Battleship and Destroyer types can only be made from the foundry, which creates a sort of a "tech tree" in that you can't build some ships before building others.

The blue scout travels very fast, and has a great viewing distance, but has no combat ability.

The maintenance vehicle actually makes up for something that Red does naturally - all red units will heal over time, but only the blue MV can heal blue units. That means if you're going up against red, don't let them limp away! they'll come back at full power if you leave them too long.

The last and most strategy-altering ship that blue has is the Monitor. It can fire a long range cannon clear across the screen at 50% zoom level! Unfortunately, it moves like a snail, and has a very small sight radius. So you need to match it up with a scout or some other unit to go see the enemy, so you can shoot them. It's also a good idea to have plenty of escorts for a small fleet of Monitors, because once other units close in, they're pretty much toast!

You feel very passionate about your battle with the blues, do you?

Well, Red Conquest, after all four episodes come out, will guide you through the tragic story line of the fall of Blue planets, the rise of the red forces, and really show how the Reds got to be so angry at the Blues in the first place.

I have to warn you, it'll all start off pretty cryptic, though. :) See if you can figure out what's going in in the first Episode once you play it through. The hints are there for the second and third episode... I'll start hinting at the fourth episode later. :)

  13. John, I've been a big supporter of your two previous games! Blue Defense was my first purchased iPhone game :D

    This new game looks stunning!

Oh, also - red units are built very quickly, but cost more - and Blue units take nearly twice as long to build, but cost less to build.

I have a feeling that this is going to be big. Very colorful and RTS awesomeness ;)

It does seem confusing with blue/red colors in the units.. but nothing wrong, just me.

Hey there John! Glad to hear that you're now happily married and back on development for your third in the series!
Will you be using paid DLC to add the other 3 chapters to this 1st chapter? I honestly think it could work..... just avoid the bad press about C&C Red Alert where some people playing it in non-english countries had problems downloading the DLC packs. (if the iDevice is not in English, the DLC says something like cannot find the file, or only available in english....). Free update would avoid this, but with DLC, you could be mitigating piracy and get a more continuous revenue stream.

What's your thoughts on this? :)

I am really excited for this game. Blue Defense and Blue Attack are some of my most played games, and in my opinion two of the best games on the app store. I will definitely pick up Red Conquest when it comes out.
