I thought it had always been freemium? I downloaded it when it came out and had a lot of fun with it but I'm fairly sure I didn't pay anything for it.
Luckily it automatically disables ads and gives the other "Premium" perks to you if you bought the game previously. Dogbyte is one of the good ones.
