Everyone wants to fly away now and then - above the clouds is certainly looking like a good prospect from down here. With their very first iPhone game, Swedish developers Axolot have already shown that they're keen to break away and try something fresh. Above is "a new type of platform game that serves up a clever combination of engaging fast-paced jump action, dazzling hand drawn graphics and a sweeping soundtrack ", that is also described as a mix between Canabalt and Doodle Jump. A good start then, and the screenshots we have been sent are just as reassuring of how excited we should be about this game. The artwork alone looks like a breath of fresh air, and is perhaps representative of the premise of the game - as if it needed one. "The player takes the role of a curious office worker that discovers a pair of mysterious platforms aiming towards the sky. ItÂ’s the players mission to see how far up he can explore without falling. Echoing freedom from normality, presumably more like Office Space than Falling Down, the game's visuals are somewhat representative of Mirror's Edge, as are the glowing coloured blocks that guide you on your path upwards towards the sky. Carefully timed jumps and quick thinking is what Above claims to be all about, and hopefully it will be forgiving enough to prevent iPhones from hitting walls, but challenging enough to add the kind of depth that could really benefit this title. Hopes are sky-high for Above, and we really can't wait to get our hands on it when it's released this March.
I like the look but a game like this will come down to how well it plays. A gameplay video would be nice.
