In fairness, the DS version of FF3 was reworked quite a bit from the original; it wasn't just a reskin. I didn't mess with FF3 too much in its new incarnation, but I can say that FF5's system was leaps and bounds better than the one in FF3 in terms of gestalt-classing and variety.

FFT IS 15 years old. I guess another FFT would be cool, but it's had numerous sequels and imitators, and was itself heavily modeled after Tactics Ogre. Really, anything like that that doesn't substantially surpass the others like it is going to be a big failure and its a big risk. Also, I think the datedness of FF5 vs FFT is a bit arbitrary. Graphics, sure, but there isn't necessarily a linear progression within the series from simple to more convoluted as it is.

Anyway, I was liking this by the end of the Prologue. I'm still going to wait to see if they drop the prices though.

I wouldn't be holding my breath waiting for a sale.
Using this pricing method seems like a way around having sales.
Unlock able content as IAP usually has no sales.

So I just finished the free portion of this game, I personally liked it. I prefer the old 16 bit graphics over the new 3d stuff. The story seems to have some potential as well. The only thing I don't really like is that the levels are set per chapter, I would like to have the option to power level my characters and know that it will help me into the following chapters.

Nope, none that I've seen so far. Also, Square-Enix normally does not incorporate iCloud saves into their games.

I'm not holding my breath, although considering the high price, I'm not sure that this will follow any established trend either, especially if sales aren't exactly spectacular.

I will reconsider playing this after all of your reviews. I hate to judge a potentially good game just off the graphics, but they should have put time to update the characters to justify the price.

Well, I went ahead and bought this after playing through and enjoying the prologue, however even though I am enjoying the game, I really don’t think a remake of an old java mobile phone game is worth $30 even if it is a Final Fantasy game. There’s just too many other great titles you could pick up for a fraction of the price. Bastion for example was recently released on iOS and that’s only $5 for an utterly beautiful game with high production values. This game uses assets from old FF games like FF4. Shame on you Square-Enix. I’d say go with TWEWY if you’re looking to sooth that SE itch.

Just to clarify, I am enjoying the game like I already mentioned. The story is interesting enough to keep me playing and I quite like the cast of characters, but I really just can't justify that $30 price. Not when there are other games available that have a much higher production value, that are full quality titles too and cost only a fraction of this game's price. You just HAVE to take that into consideration and SE don't seem to realise that. I feel a price of $9.99 would have been more appropriate for this title and at that price I feel more people would be willing to take the plunge and buy the game.

It comes down to how you define quality. There are plenty of good RPGs on the AppStore, but they typically fall in the 5-8hr range. This game supposedly gives you the old FF fix. Like, coming back to FF6 for a week or two of extended sessions. Honestly, if I take myself out of the iOS pricing mindset...a few yrs ago, I bought FF6 Advance for I think $35. Later, I paid a similar price for CT DS. I recently paid $25-30 for Golden Sun 3 and Radiant Historia (games that are fairly retro in design, if not necessarily in looks). There are also the DS Dragon Quest games... Again, wouldn't bat an eye picking one up for $20 used.

I wouldn't really compare this game to FF6. It's much more comparable to FF4 in my opinion. If it was at FF6's quality I'd say it's definitely worth the price since that's my all time fave FF game. And it's not that it's a retro looking game, I happen to love retro games since I'm an older gamer myself and grew up with the original FF's, but you have to compare it to other games that are out there on the market, and I'm not referring to the million and one casual games. I'm talking about the quality games that offer high production values at a reasonable price. Bastion, Aquaria for example.. Both cost $5 and in my opinion offer much higher production values and quality than this title.

I'm not knocking the game itself as I already stated, I'm enjoying it. I just feel that SE priced it at a much higher price than it's worth.

played through the prologue yesterday. its a nice "classic" FF experience with great music, but nothing more. i'm going to give chapter one a try (mostly for sentimental reasons), but currently i really can't imagine getting the full thing.

and with 7,99€ IAP for the chiptune soundtrack, they probably just targeting real FF fanatics with this title... whole thing seems a bit like an experiment to me? this and TWEWY in the same week? weird...

Coming the same week that I didn't even hesitate to drop $20 on TWEWY, $15 to unlock the rest of The Walking Dead ($20 total), and a measly $5 on Bastion, it's kinda hard to choke down $30 + an optional $10 extra for this one. I might feel different if the level of quality was up to FFIV, V, or VI standards, but it isn't.

And the ridiculously huge d-pad (and equally large dead zone in the center of it) while playing on iPad is making it really hard for me to even enjoy what is here. Talk about poorly optimized iPad controls...

After 3 hours play I have just reached the point where you assign jobs to your party and I have to say that this game is awesome ! Great story so far.

There's a lot of negative feedback in this thread from people who have played little or nothing of the game. For me it's getting better and better as I play on.

Well worth the money IMO. Also loving TWEWY but it's taken a back seat to this. This is classic FF and it's superbly written. I can't wait to see where the adventure takes me, especially as all the info I've seen suggests it's a full 40 hr game.

Edit : I've started with Warrior, Summoner, White Mage, Red Mage. The little characters look awesome when they get their job skins on !

Does the chiptune package come with the set, or is it always an optional purchase?
