Sky-dive, barrel roll and touch the clouds in High Flyer Death Defyer, a recently announced action title coming to the iOS and Android platforms this summer.

Gravity had it coming. What do you get when you create an action title for the iOS and Android platforms based on treasure hunting, authoritarian governments, and sky diving? You get High Flyer Death Defyer, a new gravity-defying title from Game Mechanic Studios dropping to earth summer 2011.

On Friday, GamePro sat down with Jason Alejandre, President and Creative director of Game Mechanic Studios to get a first look of the companys first iOS title, High Flyer Death Defyer. Due out in the summer of 2011 and without a pricepoint yet, this free falling action title comes from a gaming house with an impressive resume. Mechanic Studios has worked on such "core" titles as the latest Medal of Honor and Homefront; meanwhile, they've waded into the mobile pool as well, having worked on several Ngmoco titles. Now the company is releasing its first self-published game, and it packs the visual punch youd expect from such high-end developers.

If the name of the title seems strange, its because Alejandre came up with it when he was 14. Yet, the title is also pretty fitting. You play as a treasure-hunter who exists in a world where such adventures must be done in stealth. But instead of breaking into caves and vaults, youre skydiving while avoiding spinning fan-blades, traps, and an authoritarian regime bent on stopping you. Youll need to learn to dive to get between narrow gaps, barrel roll to avoid obstacles, and use your limited jetpack so you can safely land on treasure-rich free floating structures.

While many developers have designed for the iPhone and later ported to the iPad, Alejandre claims that High Flyer Death Defyer was built with the iPad in mind. That said, the game is planned to be released on not only the iPad and iPad 2, but the iPhone and Android. The pre-alpha version GamePro got to see utilized the iPad 2s high-end graphics and accelerometer control scheme beautifully. The world is 3-D but has a cartoonish feel to it, with strong use of shading to create a look that is reminiscent of No More Heroes or Team Fortress 2. The player has to guide their freefalling hero through obstacles and towards certain goals and the iPads accelerometer controls seem well-suited to the task. Additional actions (like initiating a barrel-roll) require simple taps on the screen.

The game isnt just about jumping from platform to platform and collecting the occasional treasure, but also going through certain obstacles to avoid detection. Cloaking rings will help you keep your low profile to continue your treasure hunting activities. Though Alejandre was mum on the forces youll be hiding from, he did suggest that if you ran out of stealth, enemy forces would know where you are and would come to kill you. So stealth= survival.

And while the character starts out as a simple money-loving treasure hunter, he soon discovers something that makes him more than that. Hes like Han Solo, explains Alejandre. He finds something that puts him on the path to become a hero.

The game is non-linear to say the least. Though the player is always heading earth-bound, that doesnt mean their course of action is limited. There are save points located on platforms and typically nine to twelve platforms per stagedropping from the first platform to the last in a given stage should take a player about ten minutes. You wont get all of the platforms and objectives the first time around, and so replaying certain stages is definitely part of the experience. Game Mechanic Studios is planning for 30 stages in total for the game, so youll hopefully have hours of futuristic cliff-diving to look forward to.

Game Mechanic Studios is attempting to do something very different with High Flyer Death Defyer. Aside from a tongue-twisting name, the sheer amount of polish and the unusual concept differentiate this game from the pack. To see whether or not iOS gamers take the fall for such a genre and gravity-defying game, youll have to wait until this summer.
