What are some free (preferably) or low cost apps that I must get? I've heard about several of the top apps already, but I'm looking for some that are hidden gems and less known.

Chain link HD, not sure if it's still $0.99 but very fun and addicting!

HAHA! YOU GOT AN IPAD! TECHNOLOGY SUCKER!!!!

I mean, ahem. Eliss looks like a really cool game for the iPad-it was great on the IPhone and will benefit greatly from the big iPad screen.

Congrats on your iPad! Welcome to the elite club! ;)
Some good free and cheap games are:

Harbor Master HD: Free (with non-intrusive ads), with an additional map for $.99 (also removes ads)

Dizzypad HD: Free, with in-app purchases with additional modes
Compression HD: Free, with house ads at the end of each game, non-intrusive

Battle for Wesnoth HD: $.99, try the computer version out for free to see if you like it. Amazing value.

Glyder 2 for iPad: $.99, really good once you get into it, and try to unlock all the achievements.

Some more expensive, yet highly recommended games:

    Labyrinth 2 HD: $7.99
Flight Control HD: $4.99 (if you liked the iPhone version or don't have it)
Warpgate HD: $7.99 (if you don't have the iPhone version or love it)
PvZ HD: $9.99 (great deal if you don't have the iPhone or Mac versions, and good for returning fans)

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Pinball HD--it's beautiful on the big screen! Also, try your iPhone games at 2x pixel--a lot of them don't look all that bad...

Dry your tears and get used to it!
    The iPad is awesome! :)

I've tried several of my ipod games, and they are just as fun in the 2x mode despite the pixel edges. I just downloaded Eliss again too and it's fantastic.

+1. I totally forgot about this. It's only $0.99, but it should be worth a lot more than its price.

Larger playing field. Easier management. Almost like computer version but with touch. Not to mention a ton more levels than PC. For a dollar, no better upgrade to HD.

True. Battle for Wesnoth HD is the best steal on the iPad for the price.

This game is awesome, too. Unbelievably free.

so far my favorite games to play are nova at 2x, zombieville USA at 2x, real racing at 2x, and biodefense HD is pretty fun. I'll probably download enviro bear later and I might just go into my iTunes purchase history to see all the hundreds of apps I've bought. I know that some of them just have to be universal now.

does anyone know of any universal apps off the top of their heads?
