Hi there, just have a quick poll for players out there: When you get a game, how often do you disable push notifications for a new app?
Thanks guys so far for the replies. Another question, would you leave them on if an app said in its description that it heavily requires them?
Say I'm using iMovie. I'll turn it on while I use it and then turn it off when I'm done. It's really all about what you plan to do with the App.
I typically turn them off, especially for games, where they are typically used for spammy advertising.
For multiplayer games, as long as I'm playing them I keep it on. There's no point in playing a multiplayer game and not getting alerted when it's my turn. Bagde and sound alerts combo works perfectly for me.
Well, if it 'heavily requires them' then that suggests that push notifications is an important mechanic (for example in a multilayer game or other apps such as Facebook). In that case I would activate them, but you need to make sure that the user understands the importance of them in your game so they will activate notifications. If it is for something that was not dependant on the game, even if it does state that it is recommended to turn them on, I probably won't.
There are very few apps that I keep push notifications on. They are usually too intrusive (with little to no benefit) for me not to be annoyed with them. If an app required it and I don't know/haven't heard great things about the app, it would be enough for me to say 'pass' to.
Great responses, hopefully this thread becomes helpful for other developers too. So far it seems most of the people polled disable notifications for all or some of the apps they download. Let's see how many more take the poll, would be good if we ended up with like 100 results.
I keep them on for game scores on sportacular and I also keep them on World War this way I know what is happening.
I only use push notifications for social media, instant messaging, and multiplayer games that I'm actively playing.
I pretty much always leave notifications on by default... OCD about having my phone plugged in while at home, so battery drain usually isn't an issue.
This exactly; only for multiplayer games I'm actively playing at he moment. For example, the only app with notifications on on my iPod right now is Carcassonne. Oh, and also the news app I mainly read from for breaking news and such, but that's not related to gaming.
PN are only useful, as said, in multiplayer and social apps. Everything else cannot be THAT important that it cannot wait until I play the game again. So I keep them off.
