Supposedly you can work around Capcom's stupidity by inviting friends through GC. I haven't tried it since I have friendlies unlocked already but a couple people vouched for it. No need to unlock friendlies.
I looked after you mentioned it and still couldn't find the button. I've actually never challenged anyone to any game through the GC app.
Go to your friends page in GC, find their SFxT , tap it and in the top right corner there's a button that says Play. Tap that and your SFxT game should open up and redirects you to a multiplayer game against your friend.

Got these two requests today. Are they from this thread? The first one may have been a random I played this morning before work. The second must be from TA because I have 15 friends in common. But I don't recognize either name.
