This is somewhat of a dev log for Big Mountain Snowboarding 2, coming out this spring/summer. I'll upload new videos as new things come online. The first version is from 2009. We're on a whole new engine now and are able to do a lot of features that were missing from our earlier attempt. • Ragdoll falling • Totally revised trick system with flips. • Higher res everything. • Revamped animation system with blending. • Totally reworked UI system that avoids stretching. • Rails and other obstacles.
I updated the video in the first post. This shows a revised camera system, the snowboard fitting to the ground, and some physics tweaks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPfSaivlubg&feature=youtu.be
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnWBJEpMEOI&feature=youtu.be New update with a first pass at snow trail (without particles), some new animations, and a shadow blur. My computer is still having some difficulty with playing and recording at the same time.
Cool to see this in development. The original is still the only snowboarding game on the app store worth bothering with. Look forward to this progressing.
Thanks Gabrien! There's just not much more we can do with the old engine, so it's a long path to a sequel. I'll be posting updates whenever we have something cool added. One of the big features we've been talking about is a full mountain rather than split trails, like Amped or Stoked on xbox. I'm not sure if we can pull that off yet though.
That, along with more stuff to do on the slopes would be very cool. You got the crucial basics right in the original, and that is why it has made the transition to every new device I've bought despite being light on content: it's simply fun to board around for its own sake. Will be keeping an eye on this thread, thank you.
Some more animation work on jumping and landing. Neither of us had any 3d modeling chops for the first game so we had to rely on very limited contractors. We're now doing most of the animation work in-house so we can go into a lot more detail. You can jump just by going off a cliff, and we have an instant jump command like the last game, but we also have a prepare to jump mode now. The longer you prepare, the higher your jump, but you can't turn very well while doing it.
Some grabs Video recording is all sorted out so we can do some high quality vids. Here's just a quick one with some grabs. Not counting spins and flips we have 15 different basic grabs now. Snow spray and tree shadows also went in, along with a lot of physics work. Hopefully we'll have a longer vid with flips soon.
Progress on the GIANT map Some progress on the "whole mountain at once" level. That's 4km x 4km worth of mountain. We have code to reduce those 14 million verts down to a manageable level once we're happy with the layout.
New video with flips. I replaced the vid in the first post with this. It's also on a new experimental huge mountain map that we're working on. This video does a good job of showing off all the animation blending going on.
More progress on mountain creation We're working out more of the details in the mountain creation. We're definitely going with whole ski-resort sized maps with lots of trails on them. These trails here are just rough outlines.
Completely revised the skirt and added a lot of trail detail. The video is getting pretty out of date.
