Interesting video from Ben Kuchera who is the gaming editor at Ars Technica with lots of good advice for indies on how to approach editors to get publicity. He gets 100 pieces of email including the big players on a slow day, so you gotta provide a hook to grab their attention, etc. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/12/how-to-market-your-indie-games-ben-kucheras-lecture-at-run-jump-dev.ars
very cool video, thanks for posting it! I was actually going to start sending promo codes for my first game to reviewers today, so it came at the perfect time
I've already watched it 3 times... Really like what he said about don't ever give up, it separates the good developers from the bad ones... then again, being stubborn isn't really a good idea as well, so i guess good developers can find that balance ?
Very instructive video, thanks for sharing! For us it probably means to invest more in the professional creation of game video trailers.
I watched it several times, too. Apparently, our website is rather weak, so that's what I'll be working on. Might have to start blogging, too. What's interesting is his take on holding back reviews until the game is ready for sale. Kind of a luxury for an indie really--you take whatever press you can get, no?
They Make Games Check out www.TheyMakeGames.com I just launched a Beta of this new community this morning. They Make Games mission is to help indie developers with promotion for successful self publishing, and much more. Let me know what you think! /Rasmus
I'd like to suggest you this book: iPhone and iPad Apps Marketing: Secrets to Selling Your iPhone and iPad Apps You can find a lot of tips&tricks ... and some of them are: MUST DO! Good luck with your marketing!
I double that. I would start by taking these three steps. 1. Have a target audience that you believe you can help 2. Know how to find your audience and explain why they should care 3. Let them participate in EVERYTHING you do that matters and you'll have a mutually beneficial relationship. Let me know if you have any questions!
Agreed. This is a solid niche game strategy. Even in that video they were talking about finding the niches, finding the small areas where there are openings in the game market. Involving a community in the making of a game is an excellent way to find success.
