They give a decent number of premium currency pretty easily. For the chap that has trouble with chapter 4, probably you just need to grind a little like RPGs. It's a mix of RPG and shmup so skill alone isn't enough. And to pass I suggest using tag changing to other characters letting primary char to heal a bit. Since you build up tag to 3, not using it is also a waste. Another tip is add friends that have good main characters. You can call them for 6 seconds or so and super high level friends with high stats and rare runes will destroy must bosses. I'm only up to Chapter 6 but I'm doing fairly okay so far. I think the best way to play it thus far is try it and if you like it, jump for the 3.99 pack that gives something like 30 gems everyday. That's the offer right now that makes the most sense. In essence I just consider it a 3.99 game and be done with it. I've gotten about 6 hours of gameplay out of it so I think that's a fair trade. I'll probably get another 4-5 hours more gameplay out of it so I reckon as a 4 bucks game is okay. Just my opinion.
