(Edit)I've added two new icons I've drawn to the bottom. I'm hoping to go with one of these two. (The squid or the spooky door). No voting needed. Just let me know which you prefer. Thanks!

    Howdy folks.

So we're days away from submitting our fantasy adventure game CastleAbra

Taking an idea from SpaceHat's thread (I voted for 2 BTW) I've decided to ask you knowledgeable ladies and gents for advice on our icon choice.

Please vote and give me any criticisms and ideas you have. I'm open to reworking any of the icons or just creating a new one altogether.

    Thanks for your time!

I like 3 a lot. It makes me curious and if I saw it I would think it is a game I might be interested in.

I'd go with 3 out of those choices, but honestly they are all a bit too busy. An inviting icon is simple and clean, in my opinion..

Very nice artwork but all way too busy for an icon. If I had to pick one of those, number 1, but you really need something that will look better thumbnail sized.

Look like a part of screenshot than a game icon. Pick option 1 too, if there have no any for choice

Thanks for all the replies. It seems like the consensus among everybody I've asked is that these just aren't that great. It's my fault for just using in game assets instead of designing something from scratch.

I'm going back to the drawing board and I'll create some new icons.

    Thanks guys.

I still like 3 better than either of those.

The art is really cool though!

    Thanks! :)

Man, you guys like 3. I like it too, but it looks kinda muddy when it's reduced in size.

Well, I was hoping you all would say 6. I'm more confused than ever.

    I appreciate your input guys.

I'm keen on 6. It shows the castle, and there's a bit of action and an angry splotch of red in the form of the octopus/squid thing. tbh I don't think these are very strong as icons because, as you said, some of them look really buddy when shrunk down to size. Perhaps it would be better to show us samples of them rendered much smaller?

Both are still a great artwork.

But still none of them fits to be a game icon.

I'm going with number one given those choices.

I think the problem for me is that icons should have a focal point, they should be absolutely focused on one thing that really "pops". Look at icons for the most popular games on the appstore, generally they will show the main character (or important vehicles, weapons etc) on an abstract background with a nice border. I think that's really the way to go.

These are all nice snapshots of artwork, but I agree with what ozzieing and others are suggesting. Think quite literally about the word "Icon" and try to steer clear of something that functions like a painting.

From those last 2 you've narrowed it down to, I say #5 could work, but alas, if there's time you may want to take another go at it.

    Thanks, all.

We're weighing our options, but will probably go with one of those 6. I agree with what you're all saying about having clear, simple icons, but I believe the one's I've created follow formulas set by many other successful adventure games.

We'll be submitting by this weekend. Thanks again.
