So I've spent the last ten months working on The Drive and for my next game, I want to do another, simpler, retro-inspired project. This is a demo I built a year and a half ago and I'm wondering if anyone thinks it's a good idea to turn it into a real game? The graphics and sound will change but you get the idea. What do you guys think? Is this sort of thing something you'd be interested in?Good to gauge interest before I go ahead.
I'm thinking something along the lines of Final Freeway 2R but much more retro looking, like an NES game. I could add baddies and guns/ramming like Chase HQ/Battle Out Run
Kudos to the idea! I find it very interesting. We were actually working on something very similar (TA Thread: http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=217040) But, we ran into art issues and never could finish the game.
I'll grab a video and put it out here.. we were doing traffic, bumps on the road, hills, curved turns and a lot of more stuff.. If i find an artist, i can actually finish the game as well
Awesome I hit issues doing hills the way I've built my engine. I'm actually doing it the way the old consoles did. The road is manipulated line by line, rather than using a plane and manipulating the vertices, as seems to be the way these days. I decided to do it that way as it gives the road that jagged, 8-bit effect. I think I've worked out the hills now, too.
Yup. Started out with GameSalad, then learnt to build 3D engines in C++ with DirectX then split the difference and stuck with Unity. I love it No worrying about complex matrix algorithms! Haha.
This is what 'The Longest Drive' looked like, when we stopped working on it. Subscribe to the TouchArcade YouTube channel Pls note: all art here is from the internet, mostly from outrun itself. We did not have any art of our own. All of this was used as placeholder, unless we got an artist on board.
The demo already looks good ! Yep a Chase HQ/ Battle Out Run would be great as it'll be different than the usual racing games like this Love your 'homage' to Out Run, looking forward to this new one!
Wow that looks good ! LOVE Out Run but i'm devastated i cant get it to run at a decent speed on Gridlee (MAME). Looks very impressive, shame you couldnt finish it
This is all C++ using OpenGLES on Cocos2d-X, with shitloads of matrices and trigonometry. Ask my developer, he almost died writing this game
While we're on the subject of 8 bit style games, i wish someone could get/buy the rights/ask for the games Clash Force and Polyroll. Two great retro looking games, think the dev didnt make enough money with them as they're practically abandoned. They dont work on ios7+ so two of my favourite games dont work anymore as you only see half the screen. One of my ultimate games would be a 'Chase HQ' style game but when you get to your destination it then turns into a bit of a side scrolling platform shooter ! Surely thats easy to do ?
Haha, I hate that stuff, I'm no good at maths. I could build the 3D engine with a lot of study but the physics would throw me. I never really moved much past square/square collision. Haha. Yeah, I thought about that. Like TechnoCop. Only issue is it involves a heap more art assets. Simple enough to do, though.
Thats the game i'm thinking of ! I dont think theres anything like that in the app store, its either driving or platforming, not both.
