While we're at it: SRPG - strategy RPG ARPG - action RPG Never realized how many RPG abbreviations we have. Man, now I wanna play one..
PRPG - although not as popular as the others, but ive seen it used a few times on different forums, stand for Puzzle RPG FPRPG - same in the popularity dept, but ive seen this mainly in gamespot and gamefaqs before, stands for First Person RPG.
Japanese rpgs feature turn based combat with menu operations for attack/skills/items/etc; they often feature birds eye view world exploration. Korean rpgs are action oriented arcade style button mashers usually also with a birds eye view perspective and "fetch quests." Interchangeable with action rpg.
With so much genre-blurring these days, and old RPG defining features like level raising being used so liberally, "what is an rpg" is harder to answer than it once was. I used to define an rpg by three qualities: level raising, experience grinding, and menu based combat. It's not so simple anymore.
Agreeeeed. I would have to include an element of character progression yet I know that came in later then the three you mentioned. Many of these components feature heavily in various other genres now for heaps of reasons. Not least the fact that it gives you a sense of reward for effort and it's cool to have skills
Back in the day, Nintendo Power called it an "adventure game" and I've used that label for Zelda-likes ever since. But thinking about it, "role playing" game, "adventure", "action" game? Talk about useless descriptors.
