    Hi to all,

I am looking for a RPG, a kind of Battleheart-like but with a bit more depth.
A kind of final fantasy tactics would be ideal.
Is there anything like that on the iPad?

    Thanks!

Final Fantasy Tactics: WotL is coming soon. Meanwhile, try Final Fantasy III.

    Ah thanks, good to know!

Regarding Final Fantasy, I don't think I will like it: I am not looking for an RPG with lots of talk, cutscenes...what I like is mainly the squad aspect of battleheart as well as the levelling up/equipment stuff.
To sum up: I like fighting, getting XPs and finding new items, then fighting again and so on...that's why I alluded more to FF tactics than to the straight FF.

Final Fantasy 1 and 2 have very little story (the first one even less than the second) and are essentially squad based. FF1 is fairly barebones (but you're still looking at 25+ hours for completion) and FF2 is the only FF installment that uses a "learn by doing" skill system (pretty much like the Elder Scroll games and Ultima Online did). The latter wasn't all that popular when it first came out, but I always quite enjoyed it on the systems I played it on (most recently on the PSP, before I picked up an iPad).

FF3 has a bit more story, but for the most part it's closer to FF1 than to the later games in the series. Starting with FF4, story became a stronger focus. The iPad version of FF3 is based on the Nintendo DS version, which was completely re-done and features pretty good graphics. You'll be constantly fighting with relatively few and insignificant story elements. It doesn't have more story than FF:Tactics (any of them) and is really quite playable with some remarkable fights. It has random battles, so there is never a shortage of action and since you can choose and build your characters (it's relatively open for a FF title) as you desire, there is plenty of space for customization.

It's relatively expensive by iPad standards, but just for comparison: I had bought the DS release for 45 Euro when it came out, and I still consider it one of the most enjoyable, long-lasting DS games I played (only really trumped by FF4, which took me nearly 100 hours to complete, with a final dungeon that was so frustrating and challenging that it made the victory at the end so much sweeter!

Battleheart is quite unique, and it makes such good use of the hardware. The closest game to it, I think, probably really is FF3, but it's not "close" as in "the same", more as in "if you like one, you'll like the other", provided that you enjoy both turn based and real-time combat.

Thanks for this very long and detailed answer! Indeed, it might look like FF3 might appeal to me. However, since it also seems that FF tactics is coming soon and will probably cost 15 USD as well, I might wait a little bit to see how it is and choose between the two.

Well, I don't want a MMORPG as I don't want to be able to use it only when I have a Wi-fi access.

Strategy RPG with Customizable Units! “Rebirth of Fortune” is a tactical role-playing game borrowing the combat mode made famous by such Strategy RPGs as “Tactics Ogre” and “Final Fantasy Tactics.”Up to eight of your units battle hoards of mercenaries in turn-based, strategic combat on various terrains. Upgrade and customize your own units to compete in a chess-like strategy game of position and power. Goal of the Game: Your eight individual units share a mutual relationship and utilize various strategies and skills according to their disposition. A devisive strategy is required to beat each of 200 stages and various enemy AIs. If you eradicate the enemy you will be rewarded, and using the rewards fund you can upgrade your units and prepare for greater combat. The Game Rules 1. Before combat you should customize your force and position your units within the spaces allowed. Create and position your units according to the strategy you devise. 2. When it is your turn you select your unit to move and designate the act (attack/special). One turn is limited to 30 seconds, and if your action is not completed in 30 seconds your turn will be passed to the enemy. 3. Unit color turns dark and the unit becomes disabled after it acts. It can act again when the unit color returns to normal a few turns. This attribute is related to the agility of the unit. Units of high agility have relatively short periods of time to be reactivated. 4. You can move the unit to attack the enemy within the unit's individual range of attack. You need a proper strategy according to the terrain and the attributes of your units because each unit has its own field of movement, range and method of attack, and damage value. 5. Once you select to attack an enemy unit, a white circle appears on your screen, which continuously changes its size larger and smaller. This is related to the attack power and accuracy rate. Inflict maximum damage on the enemy unit by touching the circle at its smallest. Also, the most favorable attack positions are when you are standing beside or behind the enemy unit. 6. After your unit performs its action you choose in which direction your unit will wait. The unit receives different damage values according to the direction it faces when attacked. 7. The jeweled icons and gauge bars at the top of the screen indicate special techniques available. Some units use just one orb per special, while others use more (up to five, for extremely powerful spells/buffs). When the gauge fills up, a new orb appears. The gauge bar fills up slowly over time, but fills faster when your unit is attacked or killed. 8. Each unit has a unique special ability according to its class and orbs available. Special techniques are very powerful and can turn the tides of war. You should be ready to collect orbs and use the proper special technique according to your situation in battle. 9. When you progress in battle and anihilate the entire enemy team, you win. Because the healer unit has no means of attack, a team is considered destroyed even if it has a healer still alive. With the compensation obtained from victory, you should upgrade your units and get ready for the next battle. 10. In the beginning you won't be able to use all eight units. You should upgrade your available units with the war funds obtained from battle, and you'll be able to use the locked units upon meeting the unlocking requirements. This configuration is a sort of growth tree.

I'm curious how it'll turn out, too. I've been a pretty big fan of the PS1-version of FF:Tactics and even modded my PSP for the sole purpose of being able to play it on the go. :) (Before a tweaked version was released on 2007'ish.) The GBA and DS spin-offs (FFT:A and FFT:A2) weren't half bad, and I liked the graphics of the DS one, but they just never really captured the essence of what the original so addictive and playable. But anyway, yes, the iDevices version is something I won't hesitate to buy as soon as it hits the appstore. :)

I've yet to find a turn-based strategy that ticks all the boxes, but what about the upcoming Danger Alliance from TOMEStudios?

I really like BfW, too. I wonder, though, if the guy who ported it lost interest. Been a year since the last update and there have been quite a few changes to the PC version, plus numerous campaigns. But it's a great app nevertheless.

That's what I thought until I played Tactical Soldier: Undead Rising. Great game with a lot of room to improvement, reminds me a lot of X-Com and Jagged Alliance.

+1 for Tactical Soldier: Undead Rising.

And I cannot avoid add : Knights of the Phantom Castle. A too difficult but very interesting game quite similar to Battleheart as you also control from 1 to 4 characters you pick among a roster. You won't find the same ease of control than in Battleheart, but you'll get a better feeling of RPG through more real levels, some with sort of progression through traps, or some little secrets, some story, some crafting and more. But don't expect a full fledged RPG but more a light RPG with a deep RTS based on 4 units. Take care that learning the controls can require some persistence also as far I know nobody ever finished it. But even without have finished it, it's been a great gaming time for me.

It lacks so much polish in comparison to BH though :\, makes it so much less fun to play.

    Looks very interesting indeed!
    Any feedback?

Regarding BfW, I thought it was more a "Heroes of Might and Magic"-like, which is fine as well, but a bit different.

It isn't, really. It's more like, say, Advanced Wars, or its spiritual ancestor, Master of Monsters. A HoMM-like on the iOS would be Palm Heroes 2. Quite the good game too (PH2), but everything's a little small even on the iPad.
