match-3 is a game genre which has been exhausted on the App Store, and it's definitely not of interest to most people on this discussion forum anymore unless it's Bejeweled by Popcap.

well diamond dash has been in the top grossing charts for quite some time over here.. and a quick glance to annie shows its doing pretty well in other countries aswell..

so i would disagree that match3 is not being played.. its all how much of a difference you can make.

this pretty much applies to every genre.. i don't see a special saturation for a genre on the appstore.. everything is so fast paced, that you get a pretty good chance with a quality product no matter what genre you choose.

i do agree with both of you.
i dont really see any match 3 games on forums or on review sites.
However, i think there are pretty good chances to appeal to ppl.
unfortunately, my game is not making so much of it..

    Hi,

i tried to 'revamp' match-3 games designing an app that mixes the genre with arcade-action and tower defence mechanics.

    http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=118079

It's a kind of experiment... but people seems not liking such an hybrid-thing!

We've had pretty solid sales of our match 3 game, Monsters Ate My Condo, and will be releasing our second match 3 game, Monster Flip, very soon.

It is a very crowded genre, so you'll need to differentiate your product significantly if you want to have a fighting chance.

Our strategy has been to bring unique gameplay elements to the table along with quirky, character based presentation. Avoid another gem based game at all costs!

    Thank you for your advice,
We also tried pretty hard to differentiate our match 3 game with other match 3 games. If you have time, please see our game:http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=123904&highlight=icelide

And lastly, how did you advertise your game ?

Monsters Ate My Condo had a TV advertising campaign, Apple iTunes Game of the Day feature, Adult Swim website takeover, press release, screenshots/trailer, various social media promotion, and Lite version.

Monster Flip has press releases, trailer/screenshots, social media, and in-app cross promotion all coming, with a Lite version down the track.

Contrary to what others have said, we've not tried to blend other game types into this or extend the genre into something it's not. Just play it for 90 seconds and smash your friends' scores.

There's a free with ads version available too. We're getting about 5000 downloads a day between this and the Android version. Integrates nicely with facebook if you have an account there.

I wouldn't get any development done at all if I marketed as much as it takes! One of our games is kinda match3 (except its match4:/), it needs an update but I don't think there's much interest in the genre unless the game is fully featured.

I'm finding it better to work on games that are more 'my cuppa tea'. We recently made the match4 free (no ads or anything weird) if you would like to check out something a little different. I think it will remain free, a game developer should put their heart into their apps throughout it's existence...I'm feeling that on a different genre than match-x though :)

Wow what a contrast, we had 5 a couple of days back...precicely 1000x less!
Certainly this has given me something to think about. Though the forum doesn't show it, we posted in this thread at the exact same time...it's taken me until now to get over the shock.

Not sure what to do about such a high contrast...

Tetroms are attacking the grid! Slide the balls to stop them!

    HOW TO PLAY:

●Slide the balls around the grid, match-4-or-more colors to fire at the incoming enemy invasion.
●New balls then fall in to the grid. Balls also wrap-around the edge of the grid as you push-and-pull.
●If a ball loses all color, it will not be matched again. Though a semi-colored ball can restore itself.
●Only balls 'inside' the grid (not on an edge) can be matched.
●The game is over when there are no possible matching 4 colors remaining.
●More matching colors = More Points!

in all honest friendly way.. just take a look at your offering.. generic balls and then look at fruit blitz and there is a huge gap in optical quality and foremost casual attraction..

i myself would not turn around my head for any of those, but i'm not the target group either..

as i suggest before you need to team up with a decent artist.. it doesn't help that you can code if the results look the way they look..

any maybe one day people realize that competing in the free section is even tougher than on the paid section since you need a lot of more downloads to chart anywhere

also note that 5k is across ios and android.

free download rate on android (feels to me) a lot higher than average free downloads on ios.

Absolutely - the Android crowd is about 2:1 vs iOS - they just seem to accept advertising more.

Paid versions are more even at about 50 a day from each.

Yes the first thing that strikes me with the fruit pictures above, is exactly that...they're striking. Well my domestic balls do go blurry in 3D space not that the effect counts for anything!

I'm still concerned that outsourcing generates a contractor who wants to be paid...a side effect which in all honesty I don't comprehend.

5k over 3 formats is amazing, it seems relatively impossible!
