Hello, Working on a "2.5D" fighting game, I'm actually asking myself some questions about animation. In the current state and view, fighters' facial expressions are clearly not perceptible from the regular fight distance (see pic). (beta screen) The only time when one would see faces distorting, screaming and eyes moving would be during big precalculated hit sequences (aka. Ultra in Street Fighter 4). But this would occupy only 5% of gametime. So, I would like to know if even with such small time space, it still seems important or not to you. Thank you for your attention. edit : Sorry for the poll typo, I wanted to write "it doesn't matter".
Animations are more important, look at Borderland, almost all enemies have masks or something to cover their face. I also like games where you get a picture of your face on the character, this way you can't complain that the characters are ugly.
First off, that's looking great, cOre. Second, facial expressions only matter to me in particularly intense moments, like the hit sequences you describe. If they're going to get in the way of framerate or animation, I'd say don't do it.
That's motivating, thanks Squarezero OK then, I'll see the overall opinion in a week or two, and implement spectacular animations if needed. It is important for me to know, because such super-ultra-mega-strikes would need the overall game balance to be redesigned. Thank you again.
how about a kick to the nuts having a facial expression, thjat would make up for ALL the missing expressions looks great though, cant wait to try it, facial expressions MAY help though
