It's a game where you play against a computer opponent that's commanding units, and the whole point is to take over their territory/wipe out their resources.

If you have ever played Risk, think of it that way. Risk is a turn-based strategy game, and all the principles of that are seen in videogame turn-based strategy games.

Another example would be Advance Wars, but I don't know if you've heard of that.

There are tons of them out there :p

Ever played Heroes of Might and Magic? It's similar to that. Rome: Total War? Perfect example..
Everyone takes turns. You have a turn to do whatever you want, and once you end your turn, the others (the computer if offline) have a turn to do whatever they want to do..
    Am I making any sense?
It's not like Age of Empires for example. Not real time strategy.
    Hope this helps.

Rome: Total War is real-time strategy, but with turn-based elements.

Real time tactics but turn based strategy if you want to get technical.
But when I played the campaign, I always let the computer fight for me on battles, so it was always turn based strategy for me :)

So tell me if I get this right......so the computer plays, like it attacks ur army. Now it's ur turn, and u get to decide whether to retreat, atack back, or run away. Then the comp has to react to ur decision. Am I along the right lines?

I was referring to his response and the title of the thread xD
    "Hat exactly.."

but yes, you're right on target. But most times it includes resource management, deciding what units should go in front/be more advantageous to use to fight an enemy, terrain observance, building management, etc.

But yes, you move, you attack, you destroy. Then the enemy goes. And repeat.

It may help to remember chess. That's the principle of a turn based game.

Just wanted to say that often turn-based strategy games are more complex than real-time games. That is the main reason that they are popular.
